I will drive down regularly for a night of movies at this place. 8 Let me sleep on your couch!

edit: Or better yet, maybe they'll even expand up here. Doubtful. MA has wicked strict alcohol permit laws.

It's not opening until 2013, so I'm not going to make any promises a year in advance.

Beer is served in two theaters in the Boston area. The Brattle (Harvard Sq., Cambridge) and The Somerville Theater (Davis Sq.).

I've never been to an Alamo Drafthouse--what makes it special beyond the booze-and-food angle? I'm just curious.

You can order beer and food during the movie.

Why would you want to do that?

I just like bringing outside booze into the theater. It's much cheaper and the variety is much better.

They also basically treat every movie like they're R rated, sort of, regardless of rating.

Children under 6 are never allowed in, no exception, and children under 17 must be accompanied by an adult. If the kid disturbs anyone, your whole party is kicked out.

They're very, very strict with that shit. They will actually enforce it and not care about your complaints.

"When we adopted our strict no talking policy back in 1997 we knew we were going to alienate some of our patrons," Tim League posted on the cinema's website. "That was the plan. If you can't change your behavior and be quiet (or unilluminated) during a movie, then we don't want you at our venue."

They host a lot ofspecial screenings, too. I went to a quote-a-long for Talladega Nights. I don't even like the movie, but when you're a little buzzed and the whole crowd participates it's a good time. It's comparable to a public drinking game with strangers. I imagine it all depends on your crowd, but we had a blast.

Oh, they also host public sing-a-longs. I imagine those are fun with the right amount of alcohol prerequisite.

How is the Anjelica Theater?

Second easiest theater besides the Sunshine to movie hop. They take your ticket, then you go down an escalator to the screens.

The Angelika in NYC is easy to theater hop within, but it's also a contender for my least favorite art-house.

Their programming is fine, but a majority of the theaters are long and narrow--meaning the screen is small and, if you're sitting near the back, it feels like you're just watching a big television from a distance (and this, all at the price of $13). Then, also consider the subway rumbling beneath you every 15 minutes.

Yeah, I agree. That's why I don't go there unless something I really want to see is only playing there. I always end up sitting like in the 2nd or 3rd row from the front because of what you described.

There are some screens at the Anjelica where if the doors open, light will shine all over the screen. So annoying. Also, every time I went, there was always at least some loud old people.

Always. But that's sort of inescapable everywhere in NYC, and I can't exactly blame the theater for that.

My least favorite audience quirk is when people laugh (very audibly) at not laugh-worthy moments at the Film Forum. I don't know why, but it always happens there. Perhaps some sort of nervous laughter or a token to the audience that they get something. I saw The Long Day Closes there last week and, alas, laughter throughout. Given the theater and the programming, I find this consistently absurd.

Oh gawd. This always happens at midnight shows I've been to. Blue Velvet for example. I mean, I realize there are some LOL moments in Blue Velvet, but people treat it like it's the fuckin' Room or Showgirls or something. And don't get me started on the PBR line. It's a wonder I still like that movie as much as I do.

I still like PBR (and High Life) for when I want something cheap and familiar. Even though I feel a bit self-consciously hipstery in the supermarket check-out line. I was more referring to the applause/laughter during that line. I always thought Lynch was making more of a characterization about beer = type of person you are. Sandy's dad drinks Bud because he's an all American, conservative straight-and-narrow kinda guy. Jeffrey drinks Heineken because he's young, collegiate and worldly, PBR (at least in the 80s) was more old fashioned, marginalized, off the beaten tracks type of beer hence Frank Booth loving it. I don't think Lynch ever intended to make an advertisement for PBR, but maybe I'm wrong.

I hate this very much. I went and saw a screening of A Clockwork Orange and people were laughing pretty much the whole way through.

Gah, 2015 is so far away. Remind me in two years, so I don't suffer from extreme impatience.

I suppose we have to settle for Nitehawk Cinema in the meantime?

March 22nd is grand opening.

They're doing a soft opening with $2 films and stuff. I may do that and see Ghostbusters.

Other options are Life of Pi, Argo, Animal House...

Looking forward to it.

I got my Ghostbusters tickets. Already sold out within 90 mins...

There's a Robocop with Live Explosions.

A spaghetti dinner with The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly...

This is already my new favorite place.

I don't like eating during movies, especially ones I'm seeing for the first time, but it is nice to make an occasion out of it. There's a theater here in Brooklyn called Nitehawk that does almost the exact same thing with dinner menu and cocktails themed to the movie playing, and what I usually do is go to their weekend programs. Going there at a Sunday morning to eat brunch food with Mask of the Phantasm playing, or a midnight screening of Robocop with the appropriate drinks, are heaven.

Just read up on it. It's part of their Tough Guy Cinema series where they show classic action movies and have indoor pyrotechnics at the front of the theater timed to match the explosions in the movie. They also give everyone in the audience a cap gun so you can join in on shootout sequences.

Well, I experienced the Drafthouse. And it's a blast, although there certainly are some negatives.

First off, I absolutely love the leg space that you get by having it be a "restaurant experience." I usually prefer empty theaters so I can put my feet on top of the seat in front of me. But here, you have plenty of space to spread out, and then some. Ample arm space too.

The atmosphere of the theater is maybe the best I've seen in a theater chain. It's pretty much exactly what you picture out of a movie theater. Since it's new, it's obviously very clean though. I wanted to take pictures, but my phone died before I was in the theater.

No commercials or advertising at all. Before the movie starts, there were Looney Tunes and other vintage cartoons playing. No standing in line for concessions, it's all taking care of at your seat. Reserve your seat online, and you have the ideal spot. Kids below six are not allowed in theater, and they have a pretty stern take on no talking or texting. However, the seats or separated so well that I don't think I'd see it anyway.

I do not think I'll order food again though. It simply kills the experience when you have a waiter making sure everything is good for you. Also, since this was a staff training day, lots of mistakes were being made across the board. This also means that the waitstaff was constantly shuffling through the rows. Since this was also 1/2 off, I'm sure a lot more people ordered food then usual. I'll have to see in the future, because that could be annoying too. I was incorrectly served jalapeno poppers, and my girlfriend was given a drink that we didn't order. I filled out a slip saying we didn't order these, and they took them right back. The appetizers are good. Instead of popcorn, I got a goat cheese/red pepper dip that was perfect for munching on during the movie. I've been told the shakes are amazing, and they are. I had a Grasshopper Adult Shake. YUMMMM.... Their wells are definitely overpriced.

Afterwards, people just hung out at the theater, and talked about the movie. Sort of an Indie THeater vibe. I liekd that.

Previews, and directly into the movie. I'll definitely be returning here. It's a great time, and now that I know what to expect, I know what to avoid, and what to order in the future. Highly recommended if there's one in your area. They have programming that is fun, the staff seems knowledgeable, and customer service oriented. Good times.

Pretty good cause tomorrow.

This 10-color screenprint features brand new artwork by Laurent Durieux and will be available as a timed edition release via THE DROP beginning at 11 AM CT on Thursday, April 23, and running until 11:59 PM CT on Thursday, April 30 and will cost $60.

After costs, all proceeds of the timed edition poster will be split 50/50 between two causes that are very important to us: Direct Relief and the Alamo Family Fund. Direct Relief is a humanitarian and nonprofit/nonpartisan aid organization with a mission to improve the health and lives of people affected by poverty or emergencies. The Alamo Family Fund was created to help Alamo Drafthouse employees who are facing financial hardship after a natural disaster or an unforeseen personal hardship including the global pandemic COVID-19, which has resulted in the unfortunate furlough of virtually all venue/theater members, and up to 80% of corporate staff.
