Oof.

I can't claim to be above being intermittently bored by The Turin Horse. I've seen 3 of his films now, and the only one I didn't find myself occasionally spacing during was Almanac of Fall, which being one of his early efforts, isn't quite as bleak and austere as the films that made him internationally renowned. I still rather liked it, which is why it's on the list. And it's help up well in retrospect. I've posted extended thoughts on Arirang, which I think is just really self-aware and unique.

Boner M
03-25-2012, 02:50 AM
Well obviously Arirang is self-aware in some aspects, but that doesn't negate how sophomoric Kim's 'insights' are, nor the fact that that he never actually calls into question his filmmaking talent (slideshow montage of every one of his film's posters! Repeatedly! Ahh, all the enduring Kim Di-Duk canon!). Really, it's just a long, annoying whinge sesh. Uniquely shitty, I'll concede.

He does call into question his filmmaking talents, repeatedly. Do you not recall all the bits about him mentioning the biggest criticism of his films being how rough they are? He struck me as very insecure, and being pushed over the metaphorical edge in the wake of the near-death experience during the filming of Dream. He lays himself emotionally bare, even embarrassingly so, for the sake of the audience. If you remember, there's even a moment in the film where he laughs at footage of himself lamenting his past.

Boner M
03-25-2012, 03:38 AM
I dunno, he seemed to be acknowledging criticisms about his work while at the same time limiting them to generic moral objections (ie, the 'roughness' of his films). If he was really laying his thoughts bare, he'd make reference to Tony Rayns' demolishing Film Comment piece that was published at the peak of his popularity, and played a large part in his falling stock in subsequent years (Kim's surely aware of the piece, and he and Rayns are allegedly on cordial personal terms). Instead there's just the refrain of 'the world's waiting for another film of mine', etc.

If he was really laying his thoughts bare, he'd make reference to Tony Rayns' demolishing Film Comment piece that was published at the peak of his popularity, and played a large part in his falling stock in subsequent years (Kim's surely aware of the piece, and he and Rayns are allegedly on cordial personal terms).Considering how many festival prizes Kim continues to win, I'm not sure if his stock has fallen all that far. I mean, his early films (particularly The Isle) attracted notoriety mainly for making festival audiences throw up, and in hindsight, it seems to me that the commercial success of Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring was basically a fluke. That is, I don't think that Kim's subsequent films would've become hits beyond the festival circuit even if Rayns' hadn't written his article.

Boner M
03-27-2012, 02:28 PM
I think 'falling stock among western festival audiences' is more apt, then.

Arirang's Un Certain Regard win was obviously an aberration, esp. considering the jury chairman was Kusturica, who's basically in the same boat as Kim in terms of decreasing clout (and thus the target audience member for Kim's film).

2. God Bless America- *** 1/2I liked this as well, notwithstanding some plot points that strain credibility to put it mildly (the girl sees this guy kill a girl, thinks it's awesome, and then instantly decides to go on the road with him, and he never for a second doubts her story about being abused by her parents). I think the best approach is to think of it less as a satire of contemporary America than as a movie about the friendship between two misfits. Of course, Ghost World accomplished everything this movie sets out to do and then some, but still, this had its moments.

It premiered in the U.S. at the Gene Siskel Film Center a few months back and New Yorker Films picked up the film and will release it for a limited theatrical run this year I think.

Oh shit, The Grey is now 2011 according to IMDb.

I know this is an old post but... should Austin Butt-Numb-A-Thon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butt-Numb-A-Thon) really count as an official premiere screening of a film? I mean, it's not like it's a film festival. I don't even think the films are 100% complete when they screen there.

Seems more like a secret preview screening than anything else.

So I'd say both The Grey and The Cabin in the Woods are 2012 movies, regardless of what IMDB claims.

I believe for this list (informal anyways) and the future top tens and match-cut awards we go by USA theatrical release dates anyways right? The IMDB dates are used more when we go back and do year-to-year consensus.

I remember there was that whole weirdness with King of Comedy and IMDB claiming it played at an obscure Iceland film festival in '82, now it's apparently back to being a 1983 film again.

It's fun and funny, but I guess it's slight and a bit formula. I'll still put it over Moonrise Kingdom, as I guess I'm just in spirit with animated fare that's simply carefree, with a real artisanal flair.

Welcome, Bluebeard. I'm going to see A Cat in Paris tomorrow. This film has too many things to hook me with. They had me with the title alone.
Hope you enjoyed it. It's certainly slight, but it's probably the most enjoyable movie I've seen at the theater this year.

Ah, a Martyrs fan. Awesome. The best advice I can give is to go in with no preconceived notions. I love that Laugier didn't feel the need to one-up himself in the gore department. It wouldn't be fair to go into any more detail than that.

Agree, but it's always like that around this time (although usually there is one strong blockbuster and one strong comedy by the end of summer, and I can't say that for this year). On the other hand, Wes Anderson made his career best film imo (apologies to your AV).

But you like the actually-mediocre Accident!
There is no universe where Accident is the inferior film, except the one in which you forget films quite easily, which I guess means this one.

How'd you get to see Pieta?

Played at TIFF.

Indeed. Only thing I saw there this year, though.

Later on Twitter people mentioned Brian De Palma was in the audience, but I was too busy quietly debating the quality of Dippin' Dots and other concession stand varieties with my friends before it started to notice who was filling up those reserved seats a row or two in front of us.

Would've shouted some mad love for Phantom of the Paradise, no doubt.

Updated with The Hobbit and Les Miserables - and rearranged for accuracy now that some of these films have settled in a bit more.

Also, I'm starting to use my criteria for my end of year top 10, where I start to take into account pure enjoyment as much as strict film-craftsmanship.

The Cabin in the Woods
Seven Psychopaths
The Avengers
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
21 Jump Street
Les Miserables
Cloud Atlas
Looper
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Lincoln

Really like your top 10 here- esp since I have yet to see 5 of them. I am optimistically giddy.

As I'm narrowing down my Top 10 of the year, I'm pretty satisfied with my top 8, but those last two spots are being kind of a bitch.

If you're counting You Are Not I as a 2012 release, you should add Imamura's A Man Vanishes too. Up your alley.

If you're counting You Are Not I as a 2012 release, you should add Imamura's A Man Vanishes too. Up your alley.I was going to add it a while back when Manohla Dargis' review ran in the Times, but since it wasn't on Mike D'Angelo's list of 2012 commercial releases, I didn't put it on my official "to see" list for the year.
