I've seen 138 films from 2012 so far, but I will not be writing my year end top 50 list for about a month. I'm trying to keep my favorites to myself for the time being.

I'll probably share my top 50 in a separate thread here when the time comes, if that's kosher.

The Grey is that good?
I think you'd dislike its corniness and find it mildly entertaining at best. But the ending has stuck with me more than anything else I've seen in the last couple years. Some of my thoughts on it are scattered over its thread.

I'll probably share my top 50 in a separate thread here when the time comes, if that's kosher.
Everyone likes a countdown thread.

Updated and reconjiggered for the end of February.

Hm! Well, a few of those are shooting to the top of my list then ("Moonrise," "Kid with the Bike," "Magic Mike").

I'm surprised you rated "Killer Joe" and "Looper" quite that highly. And while it's not your kind of movie, "Battle Royale"? Worthless? Really?

Apparently Battle Royale is so worthless that it transcends years.

This has gotta be one of the purest example of a Dead Teenager Movie I can think of: the kids are alive when the movie starts and it doesn't stop until everybody's dead. The film's enduring popularity in certain corners of the interweb never ceases to amaze me--but then, notwithstanding a once-in-a-blue-moon masterpiece like Eraserhead, the term "cult movie" is more or less synonymous with crap.

Well, doesn't it get any points for purity? :P

I dunno. I loved it because it was so relentless and so shocking. I viewed it more as a horror/thriller than anything else, and on that level, enjoyed it quite a bit. (Unlike a lot of other work in this area, "Battle Royale" also didn't feel cheap and exploitative).

1. Silver Linings Playbook- ****
2. The Raid- ****
3. The Kid with a Bike- ****
4. The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1- ****
5. Bernie- *** 1/2
6. The Hunter- *** 1/2
7. Argo- *** 1/2
8. Killer Joe- *** 1/2
9. The Dark Knight Rises- *** 1/2
10. Jack Reacher- *** 1/2

The Dark Knight Rises has fallen after about five viewings. I really don't like anything about Anne Hathaway's part anymore; everything about it seems like a miscalculation. Almost makes it unwatchable now.

There have been masterpieces released in 2012? Ugh, I'm seriously watching the wrong movies.

If there is going to be a tally involved, might I suggest that it start no earlier than the end of the month. I've got The Master, This is Not a Film, It's Such a Beautiful Day, and a few others out, and I'd like to feel confident about such issues. Plus, there's Spring Break for those taking classes, whereby they might be able to squeeze in another film or two...

My final list for 2012 after catching up on all that I could through Netflix. Didn't see Holy Motors until Saturday, but at least I was able to see it on the big screen. The last film (The Comedy) was tonight.

Overall, a decent year. Kind of surprised that big mega-franchises ended up delivering as well as they did. And yet there were many films that I was really looking forward to that have faded quickly in my memory. When I emerged into daylight after seeing my #1, I knew that I wouldn't see anything the rest of the year that would be any better.

1. The Avengers: ****
2. Moonrise Kingdom: ****
3. Skyfall: ****
4. Django Unchained: ****
5. Holy Motors: ****
6. The Dark Knight Rises: ****
7. Cabin in the Woods: ***1/2
8. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey: ***1/2
9. Killing Them Softly: ***1/2
10. Cloud Atlas: ***1/2

Most surprising film: ParaNorman
Most disappointing film: Prometheus

Bottom Ten of 2012:
1. Branded: *
2. Battleship: *1/2
3. The Turin Horse: *1/2
4. The Lorax: **
5. Lockout: **
6. Dark Shadows: **
7. Snow White & the Huntsman: **
8. Prometheus: **
9. Lawless: **
10. The Hunger Games: **1/2

Favorite scene or moment in films from 2012:
1. The machine gun headlights on the old Aston Martin still work in Skyfall.
2. Death stalks a simulated car crash in Bernie.
3. The Erebor prologue of The Hobbit.
4. Markie gets whacked in Killing Them Softly.
5. Steve Rogers is a man out of time in a deleted scene from The Avengers.

Favorite shot of 2012:
1. Upside down shot tracks wicked queen as she passes through mirror, and then tilts up out of a pool of water in Mirror Mirror.
2. Camera precedes man thrown off a cliff as he fires back at a car in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

Total films seen from 2012: 77

1. The Avengers: ****
