It Begins Tomorrow!
But what does it take to be a Matchie?
There's something in common with many previous winners...

IT IS TIME!
The 2012 Match Cut Awards.
Taking place at the Disco Club just a mere couple blocks away from Mara's house!
Mara herself is one of the caterers. Who needs Wolfgang Puck?
The other caterer is Scar.
Look what we get to eat!
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/429692_3042729022448_108975700 1_33152840_357273051_n.jpg
How the heck are we gonna divide that all up Scar?
Fuck the garnish!
That doesn't answer anything, but I dare not ask anymore questions...
..
..
Lots of big things have gone on for Match Cutters this year.
Benny Profane made Jaime Christley's list of Top Ten Bartenders. Yes, we know he's Vice President of a Textiling Company, but don't debate this. It's a hot topic.
Megladon8 works at Lowe's. He's gone on to fix a broken ratings system. The answer now is you could Yay or YAY or NAY or nay or Meh or Nay+ or Yay-.
..
..
Match Cut is a weird world. Tree of Life was the least seen Best Picture nomination at the Oscars, it's the most seen movie in the Match Cut world.
Only two performances crossed over from the AMPAS to the Matchies. There was a joke here, but Danny Huston stole it.
What's that?

Hanna should have won Best Score imo. Or Attack The Block. I loved Drive's score, but it wasn't as good as those two. My forth choice would be the score for Midnight In Paris. Serves me right for not submitting a final ballot, heh. Maybe next year when I see more of the nominees.

It's maddening to tally the votes, and it just doesn't make sense that the one you think is one of the better scores of the last decade is winning at one point, and just loses grip.

Everyone does.
http://thestorydepartment.com/tsd/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/james-cameron-king-of-the-world1110282240562.jpg
Normally, I’d be here because one of my powerful Oscar-nominated cinematic watersheds made it to the screen. Something about a woman and a man from different classes...or time periods...or species...who come together to fight a technologically advanced boat...or robot...or US army metaphor.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/deadandmessedup/JamesCameron3.png
That’s symbolism kids. Real filmmakers use it for themes.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/deadandmessedup/JamesCameron6.jpg
I’ve worked with a variety of special effects over the years, with people as diverse as Stan Winston and Richard Taylor. My favorite special effects artisan, though, is makeup guru Rick Baker. He’s the guy who’s been transforming me over the past decade into Mick Garris.

Good evening, I’m Duke Rock here to present the award for Best Editing. I’ve edited films with Chris Nolan on Inception 2, Sam Raimi on Evil Dead 4 and the Wachowski brothers on the Matrix 4. I hate it when people say how hard to be an editor. [mocking tone] It’s so hard to be so precise … it’s so hard to be on symmetry with the director’s creative vision… If you’re not on page with what the director is trying to accomplish you’ll be out of a job faster than Tree of Life sweeping this award show. [/mocking tone]No no no… UPS is hard work… arguing with Irish on Match-cut.org is hard work. Well I’ve done some editing and here’s how easy it is. It’s the easiest job in the word. The director walks into the room, sees the cut you made, and then one of two things will happen. He’ll either say, “good”. Or he’ll tell you what’s wrong AND how to fix it. Then they give me a million dollars.
The nominees for Best Editing are;

And my point is that they look bad. I figured the appeal is Serkis strutting his motion capture performance stuff, but even then I wasn't all that impressed (probably because I didn't like the movie itself overall but whatever).
The other films would have been better picks. The creatures in Attack the Block are a much more interesting special effect, and are integrated into the world more convincingly, for example.

How did they look bad? I thought the orangutan was near perfect. I thought fluidity of their movements and facial expressions were stunning. The guys at WETA know their shit.
Attack the Block had a unique approach for their creature design considering the low budget, but I don't put much stock in the "better movie = better effects" argument.

Attack the Block had a unique approach for their creature design considering the low budget, but I don't put much stock in the "better movie = better effects" argument.
That wasn't my argument. My argument is that the special effects are better. Attack the Block is smarter about its effects and looks better as a result.
My problem with Apes has a lot to do with how the effects are used, and as I suggested how they integrate with the rest of the scene. I thought all of this was poor. For example the opening scene in the jungle, particularly the top down shots and when they're dodging the traps, the apes don't even look like they're part of the scenery (throughout the movie they also alternate between looking too slick or too flat, depending on the texture lighting, as opposed to naturally hairy creatures). And again mostly that comes down to what they're required to do in many shots which is fly around on the screen often like a blur. It looks stupid.
Yes some of the smaller scenes are good and Maurice was my favorite of the apes and the animation is often impressive, but mostly it just looked like CGI apes flying around on the screen and I don't think CGI stuff flying around on the screen is terribly impressive.

The cast of a movie is important. How important? Well as important as marketing Deep Blue Sea as a Samuel L Jackson movie. Important as making Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis fans run to see the Expendables. But the movies nominated tonight for Best Ensemble Cast are different. They draw in an audience for their elite acting ability, and leave the audience satisfied of their performance, regardless of how short or long they are on screen. They cast of these films affect your reaction. They affect your perception. And they affect your MC Yay or YAY or NAY or nay or Meh or Nay+ or Yay- Rating.
The nominees for Best Ensemble Cast are;

Here are the nominees for Best Original Screenplay, accompanied by a bit of the wonderful, inspired dialogue that sprung from each of these writers' minds. This is such a pleasant, cheery category.
Asghar Farhadi, A Separation
"Didn't you say it's not serious?" "It got serious."
Abbas Kiarostami, Certified Copy
"I didn't mean to sound so cynical, but when I saw all their hopes and dreams in their eyes, I just couldn't support their illusion."
Lars von Trier, Melancholia
"You better be goddamn happy."
Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris
"That's what the present is. It's a little unsatisfying because life is unsatisfying."
Terrence Malick, The Tree of Life
"Nature only wants to please itself."
And the winner is...
A Separation

Hello, I'm John Hawkes. I was the winner of the Matchie for Best Supporting Actor last year for my performance in Winter's Bone. It's only fitting that I get to pass the torch to this year's winner in BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR. Hey look at that. I am nominated again for my amazing work in Martha Marcy May Marlene. I feel so loved here.
Wait... what's going on? Who is this?

Sorry John, but this is my award show now and I'm taking over. For all you mere humans, my name is Brad Bird. That is my mortal name. You are perhaps more familiar with my celestial name, God, Allah, Yahweh, The Pan, Powerful Bird, and my favorite, Mr. Incredibird.
I am disgusted and revolted to see that my people did not nominate Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol for a single Matchie. Clearly you heathens need another dose of fire and brimstone to show you how awesome my powers are. Though I did notice that Watashi fellow nominate my film for Best Picture. He had earned his spot in the Kingdom of Bird, The rest of you though... enjoy the wrath of spending eternity in Hell (I have recreated Hell to be a nonstop marathon of Bee Movie and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island).
By the way, you should really make that Watashi guy a moderator at Match Cut. Lord Bird commands it.

If you really think her performance was terrible
I don't. She was fine, though I didn't think she was always convincing (ETM made a good comment about this in the official thread), and I actually like Mara generally (I found her much more convincing in her brief role in The Social Network, one of the only parts of that movie I liked).
My hyperbolic reaction has more to do with the surprise. Like Rowland, I had no idea her performance was so well regarded around here, didn't even think much of it at the time or even entertained the idea that she had a chance of winning. This is the first award this year that seriously (but not literally!) blew my mind when I saw the winner.

Mara might be my performance of the year if I were to choose one.
Not sure how machisimo it is, as it's one of the more emotionally wounded performances there is. I suppose the highlighted scenes of her revenge may take account for that. What's the opposite of machisimo here? Binoche?
I thought Binoche was going to win. I don't see anything there that's particularly tough for an actress. Wiig's comedic timing and subtle reactions throughout are far more impressive. She was my second pick.

I think the acting awards on this board tend to be much wonkier than the ones for picture/directing/writing since they usually reflect the films that we've chosen to see based on other factors than acting, when great acting in flawed/bad movies is very common although most of us are smart enough to stay clear of 'em based on word of mouth (cf. The Iron Lady, even though I didn't care for Streep's perf). Remember when Barbara Hershey got a nomination for doing nothing in Black Swan last year? Or Hugh Jackman's lolwut win for best actor in The Fountain in '06? Yeah.
Derek
02-29-2012, 09:28 AM
I thought Binoche was going to win. I don't see anything there that's particularly tough for an actress.
Yeah, Binoche makes it look easy, but there's probably no other actress alive that could bring out the subtle charms and enigmatic presence the way she did. It's a brilliant performance.
To be clear, I really like Mara's performance. She certainly has charisma and brought a well-roundedness to a poorly sketched out character. Still, it's in part the intensity of the material and the extremeness (cue Ben Foster) of the character's actions that makes it mesmerizing and I think it's a mistake to automatically favor a performance of broad emotional gestures to one of subtlety, particularly one whose small yet seamless shifts are crucial to making the film work. Not saying that's what your doing, but I don't see how one can reasonably dismiss Binoche so offhandedly like you did.

PRESENTING THE AWARD FOR BEST ACTOR: GARY BUSEY!
http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2008/10/23/gary460.jpg
I am honored by the invitation, but allow me to share a thought that the Lord has injected into my cracked skull; my friends, there is more to life than being a ridiculously good actor. Take it from me. I have shed the darkness of that life and embraced the light of the Lord. I am now an ACTOR, that's a-c-t-o-r, Accepting Christ To Open Righteousness. My evil self, that little creature sitting beneath my bed who constantly nibbled at my fingers before I got right with the Lord has been shit out of my life through God's ass after I turned on the LIGHT, defeated FEAR and kicked Satan back to his sad dark place.
... where am I...
...
The nominees:

Best Actor is a tough one. I hate ties.
Gosling is very undeserving in my opinion. I love Drive, but I see nothing in Gosling's performance that makes it award-worthy. Albert Brooks' sustained madness was risky to the point where it could've been stupid, but instead, it works. Mulligan/Kendricks... Not bad. Perlman, outside of his awkwardly delivered line about some fine-looking pussy, was also not bad. Drive is a director's movie all the way.
Peyman is solid and certainly deserving. Could've come across as whiney, but he didn't. Showed enough flaws that you didn't entirely root for him either.
Dujardin, my vote, is a rarity. Not only does he make the movie work, but between him and Bejo, I think it'll resonate for a while too. He seems like someone we've seen in silent films for many a years.
Pitt's Billy Beane seems too much like the Brad Pitt that we've seen from the Ocean's movies. Luckily, I like that character. But not something that I believe is worth voting for.
And Fassbender. I dug the performance, the movie. But well, I don't know. It just doesn't resonate with me months later like I had hoped. I wonder if a second viewing will make me think a lot less of the movie.

As great as Pitt was in Moneyball, I preferred his supporting role in Tree of Life. Gosling was great in Drive, but I thought that Clooney was better in The Descendants, which of course wasn't nominated for the Matchies but hey that's okay.
Dujardin though really impressed me, actually. I was fine with him winning the Oscar.

Hi, I'm Senator Rick Santorum. I'd like to introduce you to my happy, normal family who will be alongside me to present the award for Best Director. Unfortunately, I will be at work for the next few hours because unlike these Hollywood liberals and you college-educated snobs, I'm a hard-working American who works hard to put a hearty meal on my totally normal family's table every day.

Ooh, I like meals. I like food and I like the way it makes me feel. I like steak and potatoes; that's a good, hearty meal. I have people who live in the basement of my mansion who make great meals. They like food too, those good, hard-working Americans. I like those people. Sometimes we let them outside to look at my cars, I like cars too, did I mention that? I like mentioning things I like too, sometimes I talk all night to my butler about all things I like. He likes that.

I'm satisfied with the results. I really liked every one of our Best Picture nominees, so none of them would have necessarily disappointed me, though my favorite is the rightful victor. Nostalgia for the Light is easily my favorite documentary of the year, I hope its win encourages more of our members to give it a shot, and while Senna is actually my least favorite of the nominees (haven't seen Into the Abyss yet), I didn't by any means dislike it, so the tie is cool with me. Our only winner I haven't yet seen is The Artist, which will likely be rectified within the week since it's opening wide tomorrow.

To my eyes the only real flaw is Mara's win in the heavyweight categories. All the other nominees that I saw were charged with far more nuance and depth; Mara is fine for her role, but the script is so perfunctory that she doesn't get to do that much.

Best Makeup: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Best Score: Drive
Best Song: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo "Immigrant Song" and Rango "Rango"
Best Documentary: Nostalgia for the Light and Senna
Best Animated Film: RangoMy ballot wound up looking like this:
Best picture: Melancholia
Director: Lars von Trier, Melancholia
Actor: Peyman Moaadi, A Separation
Actress: Juliette Binoche, Copie conforme
Supporting Actor: Brad Pitt, The Tree of Life
Supporting Actress: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Melancholia
Ensemble: A Separation
Original Screenplay: Lars von Trier, Melancholia
Cinematography: Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
Editing: The Tree of Life
It was a tough call on best picture and director because I had three that I was really keen on. I don't think I could convincingly rationalize voting for Trier in both categories as Copie conforme and Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives were both equally deserving in my mind. A Separation was also quite strong (why wasn't Farhadi nominated for best director?), and Malick's film had its moments, but I'm far from being convinced that this is One for the Ages (some hardcore Malick fans seemed to be declaring victory even before the film premiered).
Best actor wasn't a tough call because I'd only seen A Separation and Drive, so obviously I went with the one that wasn't a one-and-a-half-note exercise in beefcake posing, though I find it strange that Moaadi keeps getting singled out since his performance needs the contrast with Shabab Hosseini's as much as Sareh Bayat's (where was her nomination, by the way?) depends on the contrast with Leila Hatami's. Between Binoche and Dunst, I could've gone either way, but wound up going with Binoche (rightly or wrongly) because she's essentially playing two roles.
Gainsbourg was of course a no-brainer as she's basically the co-lead with Dunst, but as in A Separation, neither performance would be as strong without the other. As for best supporting actor, I'm a big fan of Albert Brooks, but wound up going with Pitt since his performance in The Tree of Life seems closer to his best work than Brooks' performance in Drive (Modern Romance it ain't).
I didn't vote in the best adapted screenplay as the only nominated film I've seen is Drive, which didn't much impress me. My reasons for voting for Trier for best original screenplay are as vague as my reasons for voting for it in the best picture and director categories.
Cinematography was a no brainer for me just because Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives was such a rapturous big screen experience (if memory serves, I might've voted for it in the best sound category as well). I voted for The Tree of Life for best editing simply because its rhythmic, graphically discontinuous editing stood out more than the editing in the other nominated films.

So biggest blowout was Cinematography.
Picture was kinda close between Tree of Life and Drive. After that, the other movies managed no more then 2-3 votes.
Documentary was a horserace. I believe the winners only had 4 votes, everything else had three.
Song... same deal.
Score was very very close too, with it being a three-way tie until the final day as well.
