-We Need To Talk About Kevin missed four categories by one vote
-Jane Eyre missed three categories by one vote.
-Certified Copy didn't get locked in until the last three days. Kiarostami knocked out Sean Durkin, Martin Scorsese, and the Beginners screenplay at the very last minute.
-At one point Uncle Boonmee, The Descendents, The Artist, Martha Marcy May Marlene, and Meek's Cutoff were all in the running for Best Picture.
-We can blame MadMan for snubbing Berenice Bejo. She missed by one vote.
-Source Code and X-Men: FIrst Class are the two movies out of the top ten seen movies by Match Cutters that did not receive a single nomination.
-Best Makeup goes with four nominations. Fifth place had six extra movies.

Dang.

If I could find .avi files of A Separation, Drive, Certified Copy, I could do more... But if it just gets censored, boo...

I wanted nothing but dialog-free scenes for the reel, alas, I couldn't find those clips on YouTube. Still was fun to do.

Classy--if unsurprising--Best Picture nominees, Match-Cut.

Unfortunately, I've seen everything nominated, except for one of the scores, a make-up nominee, most of the animated film category, and two documentaries. This isn't exactly a criticism; I just wanted some surprises and recommendations! I guess I should just seek out the two unseen documentaries, then.

Hah!

Speaking of which, can someone link me to some tracks (youtube, preferably) from the Drive score? I want to prepare a little clip with samples of each nominee, but I'm having a difficult time finding the Drive score. Found "I Drive" and "Wrong Floor" so far. If someone could link their favorite track, that'd be awesome. I'm set on the rest of the nominees.

For Melancholia, I agree since aside from the brief opening, there's hardly any effects in it, but the dinosaur and evolution of the universe sequences alone earn it for Tree of Life.

-Way to go for double Brad Pitt noms. Has this happened before with another actor/actress?

-Love the Fassbender/Mulligan noms. Shame is mostly not liked around here, so I'm surprised it got anything.

Plus the fact that she's easy on the eyes doesn't hurt. Either that will be a semi-breakout performance for her, or she will go on to do more shitty work playing a teenager in some crappy TV show.

What's not to like about Shailene Woodley's performance?

Yeah, no Bejo is certainly disappointing, as I hold her charisma and performance to be just as good as Dujardin's. It's a solid category though as far as all the performers involved. I think we did a good job all around with the acting categories.

Um, Woodley wasn't nominated for the Oscar. But, yes, I don't think it's a marvelous performance, even if it is one of the better attributes of the film.

Bejo is sweet, but she doesn't make my Top 5, either. Nonetheless, none of my nominees made it into Supporting Actress this year.

*scrutinizes list more closely*

I only need to see Shame, which just opened in my area, and Martha Marcy, which is available to me, and I'll be all caught up with the performance nominations. Into the Abyss is the only documentary, which I'll have to figure out some way to see, and as for the animated nominations, I'm really not all that interested in the Kung Fu Panda and Happy Feet sequels, but I know they have their ardent supporters, so I should give them a shot.

Oh, and no John C. Reilly supporting nod for Terri? That was one of my favorite performances from the year, God Damn you Matchies! Ditto Min-sik Choi from the otherwise mediocre I Saw the Devil, and basically my entire Best Actress nomination field. Not enough people have seen Tomboy, Caterpillar, Tuesday After Christmas, or Sleeping Beauty for their lead actresses to have a realistic shot, but not even Jeong-hie Yun for Poetry?

Spinal

So, wait, did you combine the votes? Or did she get a nomination simply based on votes placed in the supporting category?

Derek

I don't see how you can consider Charlotte the lead over Dunst. I could see considering them both leads, but I always assumed for awards purposes, that everyone aside from the first male/female lead automatically goes to Supportin even if they have nearly as much or equal screen time. Seems silly not to vote for a performance you love just because it fell in the "lesser" acting category.

Seems like that's what they do with most awards, but either way, Charlotte wasn't all that prominent in the entire first half so considering her a lead is still pushing it. Still, your thinking about not voting for her at all now is definitely sillier. :)

Seems like that's what they do with most awards, but either way, Charlotte wasn't all that prominent in the entire first half so considering her a lead is still pushing it. Still, your thinking about not voting for her at all now is definitely sillier. :)

Just like Dunst wasn't all that prominent in the second half of the film. Why is one part of the film more important than the other?

And no, it's not silly. An actor who is in a lead role is naturally going to have more moments and opportunities to shine. That's why the categories are separate to begin with.

And the reason why I'm bringing up the nomination counts is that it really does make a difference.

If you're not going to combine the votes, then we need to have an argument about every debatable performance so that we know where to cast a vote.

If you do combine the vote, then it all sorts itself out naturally.

It's happened a lot of times if you look through the nominations: Midnight Cowboy, Terms of Endearment, All About Eve, Thelma and Louise etc.

Only stopped since studio's realised they get better odds by splitting them up.

Huh, how bout that...

Certainly true. Several actresses were 1-2 votes away for a lead nom. If the Gainsborgh votes all went to Supporting, then that would open 6 votes that could've gone to...

Jeong-Hie, Theron, Swinton, Waskiskowska (sp...), Davis, Chastain, Anaya...

All those actresses were just a few votes from a nom. In some of their cases, one vote.

I mentioned this in the very first page of the nomination thread specifically for Gainsbourg.

I live in Orange County. I have to drive like a hour to see it. My theater is getting it on Friday where I can see it for free.

Anyone want to present Makeup, Costume Design, or Art Direction?

Anyone want to do special dedications? etc?

I'd be willing to do one or two or all of those three

I'll keep this open until 11:59 PM MST tomorrow.

I will immediately send results to the posters that are presenting.

Adam, those three are yours.

The Awards will begin on the 27th. I would like the presenters to try and present in order, with at least the major awards coming at the end.

There are currently 13 categories that could be changed with a simple 2-3 votes.

Less then an hour to go. I hope some more votes come in. I hate three-way ties.

K, ballot on its way. The smaller category voting made me lazy.

Is there a particular host/announcer we can work into our posts? Or is it a free-for-all?

Does anyone know of a free program that allows me to make a slideshow video of pictures to a music track? I made this nice little slideshow with Wondershare, then as I saved it the program informed me there would be an "Evaluation Copy" notice in the background throughout the entire video if I don't buy the full version.
