I listened to pretty much everything posted here, but the only thing I can really get behind is Cloud Nothings. Took a minute to get past the slightly amateurish vocals, but it's a fucking good rock album and it sounds great. Albini for MVP.
Other thoughts:
Evian Christ is the most interesting thing I didn't much care for. I'll definitely be watching.
Enjoyed immensely the barking dog on the Machinedrum EP.
Didn't like Jacques Greene's Concealer EP, but it did lead into "Another Girl" which I had never heard and is pretty great.
Grimes was OK.
Damn you boner for always having impossible-to-get albums as your #1.

Best quote about the album, by the lead singer:

It wouldn't be an Albini production without the assholism. My guess is that he was seemingly playing Scrabble on Facebook almost the entire time. Seemingly.

First 2012 album or first from Mount Eerie album?* If it's the latter, you definitely need to check out Wind's Poem, which isn't as good, but still pretty awesome. Hard to believe Elverum has another Mount Eerie album coming later this year - apparently a companion piece to Clear Moon called Ocean Roar, which is supposed to be noisier and foggier.
About two-thirds to completion I started forming them into two distinct albums, which are two sides to the same idea. It’s clarity vs. obscurity, vision vs. fog blanket.
Can't. Friggin. Wait.
*n/m I see already ranked a few other albums from this year.

1st Mount Eerie; 2nd Elverum behind The Glow. My housemate has nearly everything on his HD, so I'll catch up soon. Is Wind's Poem the black metal-inspired one?

fwiw, my favorites of 2012 (that I can see staying in the top 10 by the year's end) are:
1. Mount Eerie - Clear Moon
2. Chromatics - Kill For Love
3. Lower Plenty - Hard Rubbish
4. Dean Blunt & Inga Copeland - Black is Beautiful

Heh, yup. Though a very loose inspiration. Like Clear Moon, I'd say it's more Lynch/Twin Peaks inspired throughout, not just in its sampling of the TP theme song. :)

Yeah, I was getting major Badalamenti/Lynch vibes on CM. Among the best kind of vibes.

I didn't much care for the sampling of Wind's Poem I heard. Black metal, which it definitely felt like in the few minutes I listened to, is far from being something I can take for any period of time. It was my first attempt at Mount Eerie. From the sampling I have just done of Clear Moon, seems a little more like my speed, so I'll probably give it a full run through.
For me, 2012 is pretty bare so far, but like all three albums and actually, the Beach House is pretty stellar:
1. Beach House, Bloom
2. James Blackshaw, Love is the Plan, The Plan is Death
3. Cloud Nothings, Attack On Memory
I usually start getting into music once summer really starts and there is a lot of lazy weekends and vacation time.

If black metal isn't your thing (I'm not really a fan but I still love Wind's Poem) then check out Lost Wisdom as well. It's probably Elverum's most serene album--short and potent.

2. Perfume Genius - Put Your Back N 2 It

Gonna chime in and say not very much at all. One might say they both mix soul and rock, but the Black Keys are more "blues" while Royal Headache are more "punk." I don't find them very similar at all in the end and I like Royal Headache a lot more.

Yeah, what IS said. I think the fact they're touring together has made that comparison more prominent (had never heard them mentioned in the same sentence til then).
I'd say Reigning Sound is a better reference, or just the Buzzcocks with R&B vocals.

This year seems to suck for most things. Is it just me or is music stuck in the doldrums? I was looking through the AV Club's list of best albums of the year and it all seemed so stale. Fiona Apple and Jack White? I like both of them but it seems left from some other era. Then you have your Grizzly Bears and Dirty Projectors and whatnot. It all just seems very safe and postpost hipstery indie. This feels like 1992 all over again. Where's Nirvana when you need them?

I was pretty disappointed with it, but I want to try again since I wasn't especially taken with their debut upon first listen (and now I love it). Still though, it's not merely "quiet," but there are crescendos and rises and stuff on their s/t that doesn't seem to be there in Coexist, and I missed that...but I'm going to spin it another time soon.

I think this was a pretty good year for music. Actually, I think the whole good year/bad year thing is largely ridiculous, and that there's almost always going to be a wealth of good music if you know where to look for it. I'm putting together my top list now and there's tons of stuff I loved, both from old favorites and new discoveries. The list isn't going to be as big as last year, when I put together 50 entries, but that's largely a function of me being very busy this year and having less time for music - I'm sure if I'd put in the time I could easily double the size of this list with great music. There may be years when certain *genres* of music are better or worse, but I don't really buy that there are years when music as a whole is suffering.

I would usually agree with sevenarts, and maybe I "don't know where to look," but all I know is no album this year would make even my top 5 from last year. Every genre I care about--ambient, hip-hop, rock, electronic, whatever--has an album from last year that is stronger than any this year IMO (except singer/songwriter stuff, this year was really strong in that department).
I sampled a few songs from Miguel a while back and promptly wrote it off. I'll do a double take out of respect for the love here.
Btw, Kendrick is probably the best pure hip-hop album of the year, but it's still pretty spotty.

I realize this sounded "my pop culture when I was 12 was better than your pop culture" but I actually meant music (at least of the popular variety) was pretty stagnant and shitty around '90-'91 and I feel we are still in that early part of the decade holding pattern now. We need a dangerous band willing to throw up all over the Grammys.

I doubt I'll finished another new book this year (just started my first re-read of King's It), so here are my top 10 books first read in 2012:
1. The Queen's Gambit, by Walter Tevis
2. Comanche Moon, by Larry McMurtry
3. Celebrant, by Michael Cisco
4. Devil Read, by Joe R. Lansdale
5. Dead Man's Walk, by Larry McMurtry
6. The Last Picture Show, by Larry McMurtry
7. Matadora, by Steve Perry
8. In Other Worlds, by A.A. Attanasio
9. When We Were Executioners, by J.M. McDermott
10. The Big Blowdown, by George Pelecanos
Looks like McMurtry is the big winner this year.

You're cute.
I've now listened to the new Big Boi album like 8 times and I can safely say it is my favorite album of the year.

I didn't think the new Big Boi was very good.
1a. Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.a.a.d city
1b. Swans - The Seer
3. Andy Stot - Luxury Problems
4. Swearin' - s/t
5. Dead Can Dance - Anastasis
6. Death Grips - The Money Store
7. Sigh - In Somniphobia
8. Aesop Rock - Skelethon
9. Killer Mike - Rap Music
10. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Psychedelic Pill
Random HMS, no order
Screaming Females - Ugly, THEESatisfaction - awE naturalE, Sun Araw - Icon Give Thank, Action Bronson & the Alchemist - Rare Chandeliers, Reks - Straight No Chaser, Dr. John - Locked Down, Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel..., Mac DeMarco - 2, Daughn Gibson - All Hell, OC and Apollo Brown - Trophies
Even before the album came out I really thought that The Seer was going to be my AOTY, but the new Kendrick Lamar has really grown on me. I'm sure I have some more I wanna listen to but I'm kinda burned out on catching up.

Love it, but no Elemental?

Love it, but no Elemental?
It'd be #1 with a bullet if it weren't a comp (which didn't stop Triptych from topping last year's list but I'll bend the rules to spread love around more).
Mount Eerie slipped out of my consciousness, so I'll revisit it soon.

Really liked the Sic Alps album from a few years ago, should get on the new one.

It's really disappointing. I loved Sir Lucious Leftfoot and had high hopes for the new one, but it's so bad. I respect that he wanted to try something new but it was a struggle to get through it.

Heh, you might say that. We move in similar circles.
If you haven't heard the second Sic Alps album Napa Asylum either, I heartily recommend that one as well. They're one of the best bands going today IMO. They just put out a 7" of Tronics covers that rules also.

That's funny. I feel exactly the opposite. I thought Sir Lucius Leftfoot was disappointing and generic. And like I mentioned earlier his new one is my favorite of the year.
