View Full Version : Match Cut Awards for 2007

Spinal
01-10-2008, 11:38 PM
Based on your nominations, I will create a ballot with five contenders in each category. This will occur on or around February 10th, leaving approximately two weeks for voting (winners announced before the Oscars assuming they happen). Feel free to put up nominations at any time and edit freely as you see more films. Once I begin tallying ballots, I will lock this thread and no more editing will be allowed.

If you do not see a category below that you feel should be included, feel free to share your thoughts and they will certainly receive due consideration.

Because we must have some sort of guideline, we will be using American release dates to determine an eligible film. I respectfully acknowledge that there are posters here from countries outside of North America. However, it makes sense to me to try to mirror the eligible films for the film awards that will be discussed most in the upcoming month. I am happy to consider films that you feel might be worthy exceptions and they will be judged on a case by case basis.

You may select up to 5 nominations in the following categories:

BEST ACTOR
BEST ACTRESS

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

I'd be curious to know if whether the match cut posters would come to the same conclusions now as they did this time last year regarding 2006?

I suppose just vote in the manner that suits you best and I will attempt to make sense of it when I make the final ballot.

It's a real testament to the gender conventions still in place in the film world, that it's so much harder to think of "Best Actress" or "Best Supporting Actress" roles, than it is to think of nominations for their male counterparts.

Granted, I have yet to see several of the 2007 releases, but I always find it harder to think of the female performances.

Really?

Granted, I have yet to see several of the 2007 releases, but I always find it harder to think of the female performances. Thinking about it for a few minutes, it might simply be chalked up to the movies I seek out and watch... films with strong female leads tend to appeal to me more than those with males (for example, I intentionally skipped The Departed last year).

OK - good to know this.

It can be tricky with so many people from so many different areas of the world voting on these things, because some posters in Asia could have potentially seen films like The Taste of Tea a few years ago.

So, beyond that Wes Anderson film and the short that played before Ratatouille, what else would we be considering here?

Yeah, that one has a 2004 IMDb date, but it did get (apparently) it's first official release in New York earlier this year. So, we'll err on the side of inclusiveness.

And yes, this means that Killer of Sheep is eligible.

Hmmm... I've never noticed him going out of his way to promote short films, or am I missing something?

Yeah, check out his "Views From the Avant-Garde" articles for some good short film reviews. Then, it's worth your noting that in 2006, he named Song and Solitude by Nathaniel Dorsky as the number one film (anything with an [s] next to it is a short, while anything with a [v / s] next to it is a video short). He also has an article usually in every Cinema Scope about avant-garde, short film cinema.

I don't see what the big deal is with Von Houten. She was fine in her role, but she didn't leave much of an impression. Tang Wei, in her analogous role in Lust, Caution, was better.

Rowland, is it true that the whole NC-17 thing for Lust, Caution was quite an over-reaction?

I *heard* that the film had a few steamy scenes, but nothing overly explicit and no nudity.

Then again, apparently there was a "cleaner" cut of the film, so maybe my friend saw that one.

How similarly directed is Lust, Caution to Brokeback Mountain, ignoring the fact that they're by the same director?

Its pretty rare that an actress can carry an entire movie on her arms like she did. She was fantastic.

And Clipper, Graham resonates so well with me, I cannot really remember the other actors. Nonetheless, a few This Is England nominations would be nice.

Well, I always thought of the term "shrug" as dismissing as unimportant, and the dictionary only confirms this. I didn't know whether you were being snide or not. I haven't seen There Will Be Blood yet, but I listened to the score and it blew me away.

Can that still count as a vote for Best Original Score, or do I need to have seen the movie?
I voted for it in the Best Scores of all time thread and I didn't even hear the score or see the movie.

And I still stand that it is one of the best scores of all time.

The best track isn't even on the soundtrack though. :( It is in one of the previews though.

I can't believe anyone is giving him a nod for anything. He's a blank slate, with no shading whatsoever. May as well nominate Robert Patrick for Terminator 2.

It's not shading that makes Bardem's performance great, it's his fierce precision. Listen to the way he enunciates a confused "ATM?" after Woody Harrelson's pleas for his life in their scene together. F.T.W.

I preferred Jones' work, however.

I've always been under the impression that what makes a good ensemble is excellent dynamic group interplay. Pulp Fiction, great ensemble. Nashville, great ensemble. I don't think I can imagine I'm Not There qualifying as an "ensemble", because nobody (save for one relatively unspectacular moment with Gere and Franklin) ever interacts with one another. It's a fine assemblage, but ensemble? I dunno...

They don't interplay together, but the six characters are very thematically tied and all from one whole (natch). I'm serious, but also a little cheeky with the nom. It is, in essence, only one character being nominated. I think it qualifies quite well.

Dictionary.com:

1. all the parts of a thing taken together, so that each part is considered only in relation to the whole.

By that definition, I'd say I'm Not There qualifies just fine. I know what you're saying, but that'd leave an awful lot of films in the gray area. From No Country (very little screen time includes even two of the three "leads") to films like Short Cuts and Magnolia, which consist of multiple small groups of actors that rarely interact with the other groups, it's hard to draw the distinction between what films contain an "ensemble cast" and which simply contain a "cast". I've always considered ensemble to mean the totality of cast without concern for how much screen time is shared between them. Anyway, I'm just trying to see if we can find even sillier things than ratings to debate over. ;)

Spinal, for the No Country actors are you just going to count the votes between Lead and Supporting together and put them all into whichever more votes came from or just leave them as they were voted?

Just wondering if it matters because even though I think Brolin and Bardem weren't exactly supporting players, I'm finding an easier place for them there.

The first one. I strongly encourage you to put them where you feel they belong and not where the Academy or somebody else feels they belong.

The first one. I strongly encourage you to put them where you feel they belong and not where the Academy or somebody else feels they belong.

It's hard to describe how I feel this is the wrong thing to do, so I'll give an example:

Best Actor Nominees (from say, 10 people)

Actor 1: 9
Actor 2: 8
Actor 3: 5
Actor 4: 4
Actor 5: 4
Actor 6: 4
Actor 7: 3

Other actors: 13

Best Supporting Actor (same ten voters)

Actor 8: 6
Actor 9: 6
Actor 10: 5
Actor 11: 5
Actor 12: 5
Actor 13: 3
Actor 14: 3
Actor 15: 2
Actor 7: 2

Other actors: 12

By this system, Actor 7 will get a Best Actor nomination, even though it's possible that he was put into the Best Supporting Actor category because that category is otherwise weak. In effect, he gets pseudo-sixth place votes that other Best Actors can't receive because it's more obvious that they are the leads.

In general, it would be better to make a definitive ruling one way or the other and have everyone adjust accordingly. However, I doubt the results in this particular case (NCFOM) would be much affected.

Zoo by Robinson Devor

The rationale behind the votes:

Best Picture was pretty simple, although it was tough not including Brand Upon the Brain!. (I might've included The Man From London but it doesn't have a distributor.) For Best Director, I tried to include as many different films as possible, although Verhoeven's is such a masterful piece of storytelling that I had to give it a second nod; conversely, Burnett's film is such a masterful piece of non-narrative filmmaking that I had to give it a second nod. (I voted for the films by Panahi and Garrel on similar grounds, respectively.) Editing is probably the most neglected, misunderstood and important phase of film production. I voted for Black Book because it's a brilliant example of classical editing: it's two and a half hours long, and something's always happening and it's never boring or confusing or indulgent; similarly, I'm Not There effortlessly juxtaposes six different stories in different periods with different styles; and I liked Brand Upon the Brain! for the way the film seems to stutter, matching the delirium of the storytelling.

My thinking for Best Ensemble Cast was to vote for films where the acting is uniformly good without anyone standing out from the crowd; this is especially true of Offside and less true of Margot at the Wedding and Gone Baby Gone where Nicole Kidman and Jack Black, and Casey Affleck, Ed Harris and Amy Ryan really shine. I also thought to include Black Snake Moan which seems to consist of nothing but stand-out performances (Ricci, Jackson, Timberlake) as reflected in my acting nominations.

If you're trying to guess who's going to win an Oscar, bet on the oldest person in the category: Ellen Page doesn't have a shot against Julie Christie, because the average age for academy members is 106. Personally, I think there are some very talented young and middle-aged actors--particularly, Philip Seymour Hoffman in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, as a character who seems normal and successful on the outside but is capable of unspeakable acts, and Christina Ricci in Black Snake Moan giving a very intense, strange, funny, sexy and weirdly moving performance.

In the supporting actress category, Amy Ryan in Gone Baby Gone and Cate Blanchett in I'm Not There are the obvious choices, but I also really liked Halina Reijn in Black Book, who goes from Nazi skank to hero literally in a blink of an eye. In the best supporting actor category, I have two diametrically opposed favorites: Ed Harris, who gives a very serious, dark, intense and, at the same time, charismatic performance in Gone Baby Gone, and James Marsden in Hairspray, who is very very funny. And Jack Black, who gives his best performance ever in Margot at the Wedding, and Marcus Carl Franklin in I'm Not There. also deserve to win.

In the screenplay categories, the two films I haven't yet mentioned are Paul Laverty's script for The Wind That Shakes the Barley, which does an excellent job of explaining the conflicts in Northern Ireland while absorbing us in its story at the same time (who knew debates about Socialism could be so cinematic?), and another historical drama, James Schamus' script for Lust, Caution which is just great Hollywood storytelling.

For cinematography and production design, I just went with what I thought looked good (my picks for Best Production Design could double for my picks for Best Costumes.) And finally, Best Documentary was a snap because it's the only one I've seen.

It's not shading that makes Bardem's performance great, it's his fierce precision. Listen to the way he enunciates a confused "ATM?" after Woody Harrelson's pleas for his life in their scene together. F.T.W.

I preferred Jones' work, however.I wonder if I'm not overrating Kelly MacDonald's performance because she's the only character I liked.

Hmm, are you suggesting that her being the only likeable character was detrimental to the film? That wouldn't make sense given your taste and some of the choices on your ballot, though I'd rather not open the 'likeable characters' can-o-worms (http://matchcut.org/viewtopic.php?p=481986&highlight=characters#481986) again.

Anyway, I wonder if I'm not overrating Kelly MacDonald's performance simply because the coupling of Kelly MacDonald and a Southern twang made me live up to my namesake.

Yes, she refutes his bogus game of chance and insists he makes a choice, but then he says "I got here the same way the coin did" and presumably kills her. In the end, it's his point of view the film endorses, allowing reviewers like Roger Ebert to talk about Chiguhr as a "force of nature" rather than a character in the conventional sense. In that sense, the Jonathan Rosenbaum and Andrew Sarris have a point about the film's reverential attitude towards this character, so if MacDonald strikes one as the true hero of the film--indeed, the only heroic character and a spiritual cousin to Marge Gunderson/Frances McDormand--it's because she represents an alternative to everything else in the film, before and after this scene.

Notes: This was actually much harder for me than expected, mostly because 01) I didn't see as many new releases this year as I usually do, and 02) I disqualified quite a few of the films I saw at film festivals mostly because a number of them are slated for US releases in 2008. Notably:

Les amours d'Astrée et Céladon (The Love of Astrea and Celedon) (Rohmer)
Avant que j'oublie (Before I Forget) (Nolot)
Chansons d'amour (Love Songs) (Honoré)
Ne Touchez pas la hache (Don't Touch the Axe) (Rivette)
Paranoid Park (Van Sant)
Silent Light (Reygadas)
Un vieille maîtresse (The Old Mistress) (Breillet)
La voyage du baloon rouge (Flight of the Red Balloon) (Hou)

Expect them to dominate on my ballot this time next year.

You didn't like the score for There Will Be Blood?I did but I figure everyone else is going to vote for it anyway, so what's the point? I was even reluctant to include Daniel Day-Lewis for best actor but I needed a fifth.

Normally, you vote for what you like?

I don't know, it's basically the only score I think I've ever bought.
