View Full Version : 2011 Match-Cut Top 10/Bottom 5 Lists (US RELEASE DATES)

Adam
02-07-2012, 01:10 AM
For the official countdown sometime in March

HERE ARE THE RULES

1. Post your 2011 top 10, and your bottom 5-10 (if you want) by US release dates. A full list can be found here (http://www.panix.com/~dangelo/nymaster11.html)

2. To keep the thread tidy, keep your lists in ONE POST ONLY. Update them only by editing the original post. You can make a new post in the thread saying 'updated with [title]' or whatever, but keep in mind such posting only makes you an attention whore, on account of nobody cares.

3. ENGLISH TITLES ONLY.

4. Boner will set the deadline - I'd guess it'll be pretty early in March

Hmm, my top five are rock solid for now, but I think I'll remix the lower half a bit. And for my five worst, I'll stick to theatrically released stuff, otherwise it'd mostly be DTV stuff:

18 out of 18 people gave Poetry a yay. I expected it to be on more than two lists. It's a strong runner-up for me. There have probably been many years during which a weaker release lineup would have resulted in Poetry cracking the top ten.

And speaking of which, this is a fine example of how the consensus doesn't necessarily constitute degrees of enthusiasm.

Haha, I haven't posted my list here yet (though it's top five for me) but yeah I was just reading the thread and thinking "where are all the Poetry votes?" replete with sad face.

The film is SO GOOD. And it's probably the film that has sat best with me in the intervening months, might even topple my top three after another viewing.

If anything, I could see it losing out on Best Picture as much as it winning Best Picture. Pop Trash should enlist eternity's help on this, as he dislikes The Artist (big surprise there, btw).

Man, I don't like being treated like I'm part of some mindless shit-loving horde. We should just use the mindless, shit-loving horde to get Pop Trash. Pitchforks and torches for all!

I don't even like the implication that the Academy Awards voters are some mindless shit-loving horde.Really I want to think of them that way, but then it occurred to me that since there are actually indie movies or eccentric fare that does get some nominations at times, that's not entirely true. Besides if that was the case, how else do you explain Incredibly Loud Oscar bait getting a BP nom when it wasn't nominated for anything at the Golden Globes? (To my knowledge, anyways) The same thing goes for True Grit last year-it didn't get a single Golden Globe nomination, but it was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress.

There hasn't been any movies you've seen this year that you expected to like that you ended up hating/loathing?

I don't even understand the point of seeing a film that has the potential to be just "okay". I skipped more movies last year because I felt it wasn't worth the time and effort.

It doesn't matter what you rate it. Why would you put a movie you liked on a "worst of" list?

It's not a "worst of" list. It's your bottom list. :frustrated:

But i guess it wouldn't matter for the purpose of the thread.

If I watched 20 movies, and liked them all, I would have naturally put the first 10 as my top and the last 10 as my bottom. That's all I'm saying.

The bottom 5 movies you see in a year are just the 5 worst movies you’ve seen in a year.

Huh?

I don't understand film buffs who don't watch movies they think they may dislike. That's kind of the whole point - to see at least a little bit of everything, veer out of your safety zone from time to time and occasionally come away surprised.

I kinda disagree.

If I have access to x number of films that appeal to me and I'm pretty sure I'd like, and I have equal access to y number of films that don't appeal to me and I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't like, with time being a luxury as the unknown in this equation, exactly why would I watch y film over x film again? (although I do, on occasion) Reading some positive reviews would pretty much be the only reason for me, but other than that, I don't wish to go exploring in that direction, at least not while there's still so many in the x film bin yet to be watched.

I always suspected I was just a film fan in film buff's clothing. :)

Russ, I've seen the films you watch. You don't have a safety zone to veer out of. ;)

I see what you're saying, but you also use your limited time to watch more adventurous or obscure films, so I guess your the special exception. But seriously, I guess I was talking more about people who simply won't try to delve into a genre or style that they haven't really explored in the past or who stick to the couple genres they love all the time.

Same here. I'd rather take a shot on an obscure Romanian film with nice screenshots than something like Breaking Dawn. Sure, there's a very minute chance I'll enjoy the latter, but there's a much higher chance I'll find the former more pleasing, at least aesthetically, which is more than I'm sure I could say about Breaking Dawn.

In my opinion it is easy to distinguish between a movie worth skipping because it is likely to be a chore - such as all the Twilight films - and a movie worth seeing because it may be entertaining trash - such.as Drive Angry, which alas wasn’t in the end. Not all bad films are the same kind of bad.

Otherwise, everything I go out of my way to watch, I have some genuine hope about at least finding worthwhile in some respect.

And yet I still wound up with close to fifty movies that I gave nays last year, but many of those are in the mixed range, and that's really not so bad out of 125 films or so seen total. I'm sure if I'd seen more movies that I was likely to dislike, the top of my worst list wouldn't be populated by the likes of Stake Land and Road to Nowhere, which I legitimately did not care for much at all, but I know there were surely many commercially released movies last year that I would have disliked more had I wasted my time with them.

I think you get better at judging what you are likely to enjoy - I for one have very little interest in seeing The Artist or The Descendants, and I know that I'll never watch J. Edgar or Invictus, even though I tend to like Eastwood films. What do those four films have in common? Well, they seem to be safe, solid, mainstream fare with little in the way of talking points or artistic risk-taking. Do I have the 8 hours to spare for that type of "reward"?

GL is a train wreck but it had some fun scenes, mainly in space. Found Hanna to be a pretty empty experience, beyond a moment or two with Eric Bana's character.

You're definitely not alone in your love for it, at least outside of MC and it seems destined to inspire mostly love/hate reactions. It's obviously a better made movie than the 3 I put below it, but I had the most kneejerk reaction to both that and Bellflower.

But Boonmee isn't all that static. It's the magical absurdity of folk tales and a serenity of its own. It's existence quietly scintillating in the dark. It's monkey spirits and sex with cat fish.

Don't get me wrong, I agree. I like it a lot and it was in my top 10 last year, but that "quietly scintillating in the dark" part was what I was equating with stasiscore - not in the sense that there's no movement or action, but that it occurs at its own pace that's likely to distance people who don't typically respond well to stasiscore-esque films. But really, I just like saying stasiscore.

Ha. Gotcha. But I think its fantastical elements and humor probably give it a much broader appeal than some of Tsai Ming-liang's movies, say, that are really static, or even Weerasethakul's other movies.

Oh sure, he's no Tsai when it comes to stasis. I'd say Tropical Malady is his most accessible, but Boonmee is easier to sit through than his other two features.

I was thinking something like the stupid cat narration/thoughts from The Future, but that would require including an animal, so maybe not. I guess it depends on how strict Boner was being with his hints.
