What can death do to something that's already dead?

Nothing.

Yeah, this battle doesn't really make sense. How do they fight?

Ghosts aren't scared of Death. They beat it. Death isn't scared of Ghosts. What can they do? It can't die.

Stalemate.

Yeah, well, it's 2012. When these strange aeons hit, let me know. I'll change my vote.

That death seems to always figure out a way. No matter how insane...

Death, just because, well, its Death. The Haunting Ghosts never struck me as really threatening, although the 1963 The Haunting is indeed a creepy, well made ghost movie.

In the Haunting

isn't it ambiguous whether the ghosts exist or not?

Not really.

Edited, expanding on that:

Near the end, the entire group sees a door breathing and buckling in. That pretty much ends any ambiguity.

The alternative explanation is that

Eleanor has some sort of low-grade telekinesis. She was the center of a Fortean rain as a child, and her distress in the house provokes the thumps and beds moving and door buckling.

Hmmm . . . . Do we assume Death has already killed the The Haunting ghosts?

Either way, I'd still vote Death.
