OK. We've reached a maximum level of internet dorkery and need to come to a conclusion on how we represent our super-awesome three-letter opinions to the other 80 people who actually post here. I have decided, in an effort to exert my utilitarian-yet-autonomous power, to come up with this solution. It is as follows:

There will be a subforum of the General Discussion Forum for 2012 (then 2013, etc...) films.
Each film will get its own thread.
The threads will be set up as a poll wherein you will be able to view who voted what.
The poll options will be simply "yay" or "nay"
I will enable for that forum only the ability to rate the thread. This will be for the use of rating the film. I have already changed the rating options to specify that you are rating the film and the five-star labels now say "PRO" through "CON."
This feature has it built-in to add-up the total # of votes and create an average rating from 1 to 5 with decimals.
This will be displayed at the top of the thread as well as on the main forum page under the thread's name (which will be the film's name).
You can look in the Maintenance forum where I have tested this.
Through my access to the MySQL database, I will extract every couple of days all the new votes and place in each film's initial post all votes, PRO through CON, and who voted what so you more easily see the votes.
There will also be a stickied master thread where we can also keep the interesting stats such as most-viewed, most yay-ed, highest rating, and so forth.I also propose that we use these threads as the film's discussion thread moving forward and we can provide a link in the first thread to the film's thread, if it has one, in the Upcoming forum.

This would also mean that the threads would be open indefinitely instead of closed soon after the year is over. However, importantly, I will not continue to update the first thread with the PRO/CON rating votes.

OK, let me know if anyone has any objections.

Cool idea, I suppose. I vote that for pro, it displays Watashi's O face.

No objections whatsoever. Glad someone who knows what they are doing has made a decision :) Good work.

What about those obscure films that only NickGlass will see at his local film festival? Will those films get their own separate thread? What about for movies that already have threads in the upcoming forum? Will we start a new thread or just add a poll onto the old one?

All 2012 US release films will get their own thread, just as E tracked them all. Films with no 2012 US release date will not be created. We'll wait for their eventual release to add them. There will also be a general request thread and people can there discuss any films they want added, especially those few where they don't get a US release but many have seen them.

But, the forum will be open to people to create new threads, so this can and should be somewhat communally governed. I can edit any post, so whoever creates a new thread for a film should just leave the first post blank for me to add to.

The Upcoming threads would no longer be auto-transformed into the film's thread. I stated in the first post, we will add a link in the first post of the new thread directing to the Upcoming thread's discussion.

And people complained about me making too many threads?

I like this.

Although there will be confusion on where to post discussion. Are you going to close the thread in the Upcoming FIlm section?

That would make sense. The final post in the Upcoming Film Forum thread can be a link to the relevant post-release thread. One of the (mildly) annoying things atm is that if you search up a thread on a particular film that has had a lot of posts, you have to pretty much click a page at random to try and find the point were it stops being random guesses about what the movie will be like and becomes actual reviews for that film.

Is there any way someone else can take over to keep the old thread's updated when the year is over if it's too much work for you?

a sub forum of the cinema center?

I'll volunteer. I practically live in the Upcoming section. I can put links to the new threads in both the last and first post of threads that live in the Upcoming section. Then close them out.

I'll probably make most of the new threads anyway.

I'm confused now.

So we're not doing the double pro-con-yay thing with Derek and Ezee?

What kind of films qualify? Major released, theatrical, everything?

How will foreign films be handled? Given that release dates in country of origin, US festivals, theatrical, and DVD can vary by 6+ months, how will everyone be be to vote?

It is no different than what E does now. It is US theatrical films.

I really like this idea. I think you did the best compromise possible, and it gives the forum a minor facelift. Might actually encourage me to get out to the theater a little more often this year, too.

I like this idea quite a bit.

Also pretty sure I'll watch Once Upon A Time In Anatolia and The Innkeepers this week, so not only going to be adding some 2012 votes sooner than I thought I would've, but also going to get to use this new system.

It made me laugh out loud during class last night. The professor was in the middle of talking and had to pause to see if he heard someone trying to ask a question.. luckily I didn't make too much of a commotion.

So is my assistance needed here? Or warranted? Like I said, I'd be happy to do it. I have a MC tab open all day so if anything it wouldn't be adding any work to me typical weekday browsing.

Confusion resolved!

Seeing it in action, I have to agree with the others --- this is an extremely clever solution.

What are everyone's thoughts of a YAY/NAY thread for movies PRE-2010?

High profile blockbusters and critically acclaimed (or disapproval) movies only.

Examples:
2009: Avatar
2008: The Dark Knight
2007: the Departed
...
1994: The Shawshank Redemption
1993: Jurassic Park
1992: Terminaor 2
...
1979: Alien
1978: Superman
1977: Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Nevermind.

THe only reason I limited it would be because the lists would be

We want the most participation out of MC for the lists to be valuable. That’s not to say a critically acclaimed NON blockbuster can’t be on the list. Example: Moon (2009).

Personally, I can't think of anything less interesting to get from MatchCut than a consensus opinion on uber-mainstream films where the consensus is a given. Gee, I wonder if the majority of MC likes Star Wars, Jaws or [insert IMdB top 250 film here]. I don't see what could possibly be gained aside from clutter since we all know what the final results will be. Now, if there were a different focus every month or quarter like "cult films", "silent horror films", "female-directed arthouse fare" (you know, use it to encourage people to seek out new films rather than rate the same films they've been rating since they were 13), then maybe we'd get some interesting discoveries and results in the end.

Well I don't believe the Majority of MC operates the same way as the IMDB top 250 list but Ok.

You bring up an interesting idea though.

I'm for anything that lends itself to discussion. To Derek's point, I'm not sure if talking about old mainstream stuff would lend itself to the site's strengths, which in my mind is more about discovering obscure, small, out of the way shit nobody talks about anywhere else.

Still could be fun though. The best way to start would be to go to the wiki & create threads based on the top 10 consensus films for each decade or year.
