E, any chance incorporating YAY's and NAY's in there? I think it'd be more useful for separating films that many people may have barely liked from those that people truly loved. Plus, that way every film can have a calculating rating out of 4.

Why are people constantly trying to complicate this?
EyesWideOpen
01-07-2012, 04:52 PM
I wouldn't say complicate it. I'd prefer a yay, meh, nay. So films that don't really connect with me I don't have to put in a yes or no category. But it's E show so I'm fine with what ever he chooses.

Why are people constantly trying to complicate this?
Because this isn't a consumer advice show like Siskel & Ebert, so the thumbs up/thumbs down is needlessly simplistic and not all that accurate when accounting for 30-40 ratings. I mean, you see see how often "mild" is thrown in front of a rating or ratings are capitalized...all I'm saying is, why not account for it. It's not really any more difficult than what's already being done.
Yeah, I was just about to inquire about incorporating that this year as well. I definitely feel a middle ground "meh" should be included.

Do we have to use the word 'meh'?

I'd say 'mixed'. We used the CON-con-mixed-pro-PRO scale on another site and it worked out great.

Yes, I like that scale because everyone can use it no matter what their preferred rating system is, and it instantly makes sense.
Anyway, The Day He Arrives - pro (mild yay)

Yeah, personally I like the five choice scale Derek listed above, but as I'm putting no work into it, I'll accept whatever E wants to use. It would be nice to get some sort of indifferent choice in there, though I've expressed my opinion on that already.

And to put my money where my mouth is, I'd be willing to help E out with this as far as updating the first post (if that's possible) or running the calculations to come up with composite scores (obv. not with every new rating, but like once a month) for each film.

I've thought of volunteering to help out, or even take it over if need be, for a more complex ratings system, but I didn't want to come across as unappreciative of the work E already does. I'm not a big fan of mixed/meh/whatever, because I usually prefer to take a stand one way or the other, but it's better than nothing. I'd personally go for NAY-nay-mild nay-mild yay-yay-YAY, but the scale already suggested would be an improvement for sure.

I hope E doesn't think I'm unappreciative. I know how much time it takes to do all those updates throughout the year, keep track of new releases, what's '11 or '12 or whatnot. I'd just like to help make a good idea even better.
I dunno about the five options, that feels like a bit much to me. Plus, I can't help but feel it'll only encourage quite a bit more changes after more time, consideration, and viewings alter people's opinions on whatever movie.
The three options, yay-mixed-nay, seems like it'd be a good, simple enough change without making things too complicated.

Well, you could always just use the con-mixed-pro options. As for additional changes - E could always set up a rule that you can't change it without a rewatch (to save him work) or if it's possible for me to edit the first post, at least the burden would be split.
I can say that in over 5 years of seeing the 5-option in practice, it's really not that difficult and very few of the dozens of people using it ever changed. If anything, it'd lead to less changes since with the old way, an on-the-fence reaction like 'mild yay' will more likely be changed to a nay.

I'll accept a 3 option, but not 5. Otherwise, someone else takes over it if willing.

Yeah, I'd help you out if you need. Seems like enough people expressed support for it, so I say do it.

You do know we added + and - to the above 5, which gives us 15 choices.

Why don't you use a standard letter grading system to make it more digestible? CON+ and PRO- read like an oxymoron.

How is applying a plus/minus qualifier to a 5 scale grading system any more oxymoronic that using something as readily identifiable as A+ / A / A- ?
It's simple semantics, but to each his own, eh.

What's hilarious is why you are still compiling the results manually in a thread. That's waaaay too much work.
At the other site Derek mentioned, we have an online database (created and maintained by a forum member) where everyone goes to enter their results. New films are entered as needed. We started with the 5 scale rating system (PRO/pro/mixed/con/CON) and added the +/- option because members requested it. It's completely indexed and searchable in a number of different ways: by title, by year, by director, by date range (of film date and entry date-by-member), etc). I don't know what I'd do without it.
But, if you think it's hilarious, then, by all means, stick with your threads. Good luck with that.

You're right, it's all semantics.
I still stand by the fact that PRO- and CON+ read as silly to me. PRO suggests you thoroughly enjoy a film and then you slap a minus on it? It seems like you're giving off mixed signals.
I would interpret A- like I would in school. You did very well, but didn't quite earn an A, or A+.
It's the kind of slight interpretation that reminds me of something a foreigner might say, while technically correct, but you chuckle to yourself.

The only chuckling I'm doing is in how easily I'm able to express my opinion in limitless ways at another site.

:: shrug ::
I use it all the time without any problems. I mean, I do have half-stars in my four star rating scale that I use, so I don't really see the problem picking midway points. Granted, explaining the difference between a pro+ and a PRO- is probably arbitrary, but so are most rating scales and it works for the group using it.

Why don't you just rate from 1-10?

Why don't you just rate from 1-10?
It's true that by now, that would be as efficient, but since it started with the PRO/CON format, it has just stuck as the grading quirk.
It is a different purpose however, than what we currently have with this thread. The point of that site is in fact to come to a qualitative consensus "score" for a film, converted to a number (scale of 1 - 5). It only then makes sense to go to that level of detail, which would here require a hostile takeover by Rowland and/or Derek.
Derek

Why don't you just rate from 1-10?
Because a 10-point scale would lead to less accurate results, since some people guard harshly and others easily. For instance:
Bosco B. - 6
Madman - 8
When in reality those essentially mean they like is about the same, the 10 point scale would reflect a fairly big difference. In this scale, they'd both likely go down as 'pro', thus lessening the variations between a numerical scale which people interpret differently.

CON. But a good con. Certainly worse then a minus pro.

people speak of other forums, there are no other forums. They don't exist.
So is this thread going to continue to be used and updated in addition to the new sub-forum? And if so, is it still the same yay/nay format we all know and love?

No. The Yay/Nay format is satisfied by the film database forum in the form of a poll.
People just need to start adding films. I did one to get the ball rolling.
