I'll second Runaway Train. The one in Super 8 was great until it became ridiculous.

Can we get some more black and white in foreign selections if possible? Once I get 10 more suggestions I will unveil to you all what this is for.

Two trains collide and one goes through the other while the hero escapes car by car running away from the crash. Best train sequence of all time found.

The train sequence at the end of Yearning may be the most memorable thing Naruse ever shot.

Not black and white but Hou's Café Lumière might fit this in a general sense. I'm also thinking that Denis's 35 Shots does as well.

Can anyone remember which Kusturica films feature trains? I know Life is a Miracle has a few. Do Black Cat, White Cat and/or Underground?

It's not any of the recent ones but:

Just because there's a scene on a train, it doesn't mean you have to list it here...

A World without Thieves by Feng Xiaogang
Tie Xie Qu by Wang Bing
Days of Being Wild by Wong Kar Wai

A world without thieves is fiction with Andy Lau and Li Bingbing the story is about thieves in a train...
Tie Xie Qu (West of Tracks) is a documentary about an old massive industrial complex, there are 3 parts, and you travel with the train to go one site to another.
Days of Being Wild is especially for the last scene with Leslie Cheung (each time I watch this scene, I found it very moving, very special)

You know, Unstoppable is, certainly train-wise, a superbly crafted piece of mayhem.

I forgot to write also, and I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but Shanghai Express by Josef von Sternberg, with Marlene Dietrich should be in the list !

There's this Spanish horror movie Horror Express, starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing that seems to have become a cult fave. I never saw it, but it was recently released as a decent blu-ray flick. It's apparently in the vein of Hammer movies too.

No to the last two. But Life is a Miracle does have a lot of train action.

Its a fairly solid movie, and the alien taking over its victims bit was probably taken from the short story that inspired all three versions of The Thing.

I recall an old black and white movie, may even have been silent. It may have starred Laurel and Hardy. And all I remember are a train barrelling down a mountain, out of control. It was goofy of course, the mountain seemed almost circular as the train seemed to go around it, and right next to the tracks the mountain just gave way to nothing, just emptyness. These images have always been in my head, but I must have seen this about 25 yers ago withno idea then what it was. Anyone got a clue?

As a kid, I was a huge fan of Avalanche Express starring Lee Marvin, Robert Shaw, Maximilian Shell,etc.... Not that good of a movie, but it's always cool when a train barely escapes a massive avalance by narrowly making it to the tunnel.
