Whatever category they get the most votes in takes it. That's the system. Other than that, you just gotta argue your case.

Like who?

And since I edited my post with a preliminary ballot, I'll repeat my question about Mildred Pierce...that is, can we include it? I plan to watch it pretty soon.

Like who?

And since I edited my post with a preliminary ballot, I'll repeat my question about Mildred Pierce...that is, can we include it? I plan to watch it pretty soon.

Charlotte Gainsbourg - Melancholia for example. I mean she has just as big a role as Dunst in the film but if she was nominated for any awards I'm sure she'd be in the supporting category.

elixir
11-26-2011, 12:53 AM
I was asking genuinely; I'm happy to discuss certain cases. I don't doubt that they exist.

I have yet to see Melancholia, so I can't comment there.

Like who?

-the entire main cast of ToL minus Sean Penn who is obviously supporting
-Andy Serkis in Apes...providing we count him at all, and I think we should because MC is way cooler than the Oscars
-Jessica Chastain I'm thinking is a lead in Take Shelter, but I could see people put her as supporting
-and yes Charlotte Gainsbourg who I was thinking was supporting, but apparently others feel different

elixir
11-26-2011, 12:58 AM
Yeah, I think Chastain and Pitt are quite clearly supporting in ToL. Only the main kid would be lead.

I need to see Take Shelter and Melancholia. Hopefully this weekend.

Best Actress: Olivia Colman, Tyrannosaur (I'm very mixed on the film, but I believe this is the single finest and most devastating performance of the year, and a particular revelation for someone only prior with her comic work).

I think Fincher's, Tintin, MMMM, Shame, and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy could all challenge Malick's latest... certainly Fincher's will probably be the widest seen among MC.

I've added Leap Year to my Instant queue based on early interest, so I love these consensus threads to highlight things that slipped through the cracks.

Yeah, I want to rewatch it, since I haven't seen it since last year, but it'll certainly get at least a couple nominations from me. I imagination it'll get Best Pic noms from 8, Nick and at least a couple others.

Of the handful of films I've seen in the past week, that one has stuck with me most.

Of the hundred or so films I have seen in the past year and a half (I saw it in September 2010), Leap Year is one of the very few that have stuck with me the most.

As a footnote, it's fascinating to me how much influence the Netflix Watch Instant function may have on these awards (and, if I wasn't being so lazy right now, I would investigate the past few annual awards since the rise of streaming).

I am unclear why there is apathy or dismay here about malick. Considering some of the more curious match-cut consensus winners, with their uber-masculine approach (Nolan.and tarantino), I'd like to see an impressionistic, graceful take on femininity compete. It's why I'm interested in Jane Eyre and other "softer" films as well.

So if it never gets a full-on US distribution deal, which at this point, it likely won't, we simply never get to vote for it. It wasn't allowed this year, so I'm voting for it this year since others are.

Why is it in our own 2011 database? We already agreed earlier that it's counting as 2011. What is the purpose of dismissing films that don't get US distribution? All it's doing is ensuring they never get the opportunity to be nominated. We didn't allow it last year b/c it only had festival runs and most people assumed it get legit theatrical distribution. You're talking about a major film (IMO) by a heavyweight director (not just my opinion) and not allowing b/c of the f'ed up US distribution rule.

Also, link to that Brimley remix please. I never tire of those.

There are cases where it happens. I remember Millenium Mambo being a 2001 release and not getting US distribution til '05, but I think we should leave room for collective exceptions when a majority of people who will see the film have already seen it. US release dates is a great general rule, but sticking to it in bullheaded fashion will only hurt foreign films that have trouble getting distribution. It's really just a matter of weighing the pros and cons and I don't see the cons to allowing a 2010 release that was ineligible in our '10 awards.

Also, while I'm a bit less enthusiastic about The Arbor and Putty Hill, both offer fascinating approaches to the documentary format (the latter more of a faux-mentary) that prove to be mightily impressive and ambitious achievements, even if not fully realized.

Super is terrible. Johnston directed The Rocketeer, Jumanji and Honey I Shrunk the Kids. I'll take his record over the one good movie Gunn directed. All of those movies are merely solid/decent at best, though. I'd rather go with a director who made one great movie over a director who made a bunch of decent movies.

Silly reason.

I believe we didn't announce nominations until the beginning of February, and the Awards start after the Oscars.

Derek
12-07-2011, 09:09 PM
Your reasoning?

Quite simple. This is a collective process that is more effective and enjoyable the more people submit their ballots. If people know they can have the fun of voting for the winners without the research/work of submitting a ballot, many will do that. Forcing potential voters to at least submit ballots (say, at least for the main 5-6 categories) in order to vote encourages more participation and pushes people to look back on the year and consider their own favorites rather that sitting back and voting from a ballot filled out for them. It's not that big of a deal either way, but I think it'd make for more interesting results.

Derek

I didn't even give a reason yet. If you're too friggin' lazy to submit a ballot, why should your opinion count as much as someone who put in the time and effort of making a ballot. It's not silly - it discourages laziness and *cough* dismissiveness.

The way to get more ballots is to reward those who take the 15-20 minutes to fill one out and leave out those who don't. I mean, there are literally months left to vote so it's not like people are being rushed to put something together. It's like homework, right? Teachers get kids to do homework by making it count for something not by telling them it's good for them even though they can learn everything by studying 2 days before the test anyway.

Also, everyone should be more insistent with the "FYC" ads.

What about people like me who often only see the nominees after they've been nominated, due to lack of availability (seriously, ask TGM, the theaters in our town SUCK), or lack of knowledge?

I haven't seen many movies this year but I often go looking for movies to watch after Match Cut has made me aware of them. Its not laziness or dismissiveness, its a lack of disposable income and lack of opportunity (in my case at least).

I still love voting on the awards (if Ive seen enough nominees. If I havent, I dont vote)

As a footnote, it's fascinating to me how much influence the Netflix Watch Instant function may have on these awards (and, if I wasn't being so lazy right now, I would investigate the past few annual awards since the rise of streaming).

I find this interesting as well. In fact, I'm wondering if the results would be different if we reran the 2010 awards now that all of the eligible films have been out for months on DVD.

I always think it works best to divide up the categories and let different people present. It's so much work for just one person. And it keeps the thread flowing. As long as the people with the major categories hold off until towards the end.

Solo cello or viola would be better.

Nah, they were going for a gypsy vibe similar to Dvorak's Slavonic dances. Cello would have been a better choice if this was a horror movie.

Speaking of original scores, to all of you who nominated Drive - what are you voting for? Or are we merging best soundtrack in this category? In my opinion it shouldn't be eligible as a score. Great soundtrack, without question.

Yeah, the synthpop montages are the only thing I remember, not a single note of the score.

Also, the Kavinsky track is not an original song, duke, none of the songs in the film are original.

I'll third this. One of my favorites of the year, for sure, worthy of nominations in a host of categories. I found a theater release schedule on here (http://jabcatmovies.com/2011/12/a-separation-us-theatrical-release-schedule/). And as Derek mentioned, it's on KG as well.

Well, through threads like this, I guess. But the Skandies (http://skandies.org/results/winners?year=2010), an awards thing run by Mike D'Angelo do it, and it's more interesting than the other results, I think.

But given most of us on probably watch less than 50% of the contenders, it wouldn't be as easy to get a consensus, you're right. But it might pick out some awesome scenes from otherwise middling, widely-seen movies.

It might be too obtuse, but "Special Achievement in Quantum Fluxing," in which we nominate the most contrived and unlikely and convenient film stories. Like, how Captain America has the blue box thing that holds all of the power of the universe and also ruins the villain's face and also gives the hero super-power and also connects the film to other Marvel films. Boy does that make things easy.

Yeah, I've heard that she's given a thankless, misogynistic archetype to play.

Ezee E

I think the movie works best with the wear and tear that Levitt's cancer does to others. Rogen and Howard both give what may be their best performances. I think Howard is especially great because she seemed to always be in a state of conflict. Personal conflict, and I wish there was more time to that.

She didn't want to be a widow at the age of 27, but you can't dump someone that is about to die either. Tough stuff.

Ezee E
01-19-2012, 07:30 PM
The movie is certainly unfair to her character. But I do not believe her character was cheating pre-cancer. I just think the relationship advanced to the point where neither character would initiate sex, something many relationships go through. Clearly, the mother was expecting a marriage announcement.

Hmm... The more I think about it the more flaws the movie has. The ensemble just does a tremendous job with what they're given.

Lucky
01-19-2012, 07:58 PM
Yeah, I've heard that she's given a thankless, misogynistic archetype to play.

That was my impression of her role, that's why I asked. I can see where you're coming from, E, I just don't think the script did her any favors to break the mold. Out of the entire cast, I'd say Angelica Huston was the shining link that elevated the material. Her line to the anesthetist at the end was the peak emotional point in the film for me.

Ezee E
01-19-2012, 08:20 PM
The line where her and her son are hugging before surgery? I didn't recognize her until halfway through.

And you're right about the movie not giving her a chance. I think she took a significant step above what was needed.

With that, I'll probably be revising again...

Lucky
01-19-2012, 08:34 PM
