I figured we could use a thread like this for people who don't check sale sites to see when good deals are going on.

Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Trilogy Blu-Ray set is on sale for $49.99 at amazon.

Jesus Christ, Best Buy is just the worst.

So get this. On Friday, I bought Eastbound & Down S1&2 and Where the Wild Things Are Bluray on Bestbuy.com. I checked store pickup and it said that they are all available at my nearest store, so I chose that. The next day, I get an email saying all three items are ready to be picked up. Excellent. I went there today and stood in the pickup line. I get there and guy tells me that he can give me EB&D, but they couldn't find WTWTA so he tells me to call their toll free number to get a refund or have it shipped to me free. Annoying, but whatever, I can wait for the shipping. But while I'm here, I'm just gonna see what other Blurays are on sale. Oh look, what's this I goddamn find on the goddamn shelf right here in the goddamn Bluray section? It's a Bluray copy of Where the Wild Thing Are! I am a mix of pleased and inconvenienced.

So I head back over to store pickup. Long line has formed and guy who was helping me earlier has been replaced by a girl who, when I try to explain to her the situation, interrupts me to say that the order probably wasn't ready and I had to wait for a confirmation email. I said no, and give her the order number so she can look up on the computer herself what happened. She does, and tries to condescendingly explain to me that it was simply unavailable at the time the order was placed, but it's available today. Then why the fuck did you guys tell me to come pick it up on Saturday, you asshole? At this point I just ask if I can take this thing home. She says no, but I can go to the checkout line and pay for it for the same price I already paid.

I go wait in the checkout line, then I explain it again to the cashier, she rings it up for the online price, go home, and now I gotta call the Bestbuy toll number to make sure I get refunded for my online purchase.

Seriously, fuck retail.

I don't mind going into the store and buying a game or something but dealing with their customer service is terrible.

I'm basically an Amazon spokesman as much as I'm talking them up and spending there so yeah I buy 99% of my games there but if I get trade in credit I'll get the game at best buy. I usually check trade in values at amazon or best buy to see which one offers the largest amount. If they're close I'll go to best buy to trade in because I don't feel like waiting the 3 weeks it takes the third party amazon uses for their trade ins to go through and verify everything and credit my account. No interest in Goozex.

Dukefrukem
11-30-2011, 12:39 PM
Since my game backlog is so large and I turn around games relitively fast, Goozex appeals to me more. I can queue up dozens of games while playing one title. Over time, the values of the games I want go down while the ones I trade in stay the same. I can get full value of the game I'm playing which means I can get up to 4 free games for trading in my one game. You're right, Amazon and BB have better trade in values than Gamestop. Those poor kids that use Gamestop.

New? No, Blu-ray books have been around since Blu-ray won the format war 4 years ago. They're just Blu-ray discs stored in an illustrated booklet about the movie instead of a case.

It's not a bad deal to upgrade a bunch of movies for $4.99 each. I replaced Goodfellas for example, so now I don't need to switch the disc to watch the whole movie.

For these one's it makes sense. The blu's that have the movie cash have a seperate stand in the store and have been reissued with the movie cash on the shrink wrap. But these are catalog blu-ray titles so they still have copies of those movies without the movie cash of which I'm sure makes up the majority of their internet inventory.

Hey for $27 versus the $80 they wanted before, I didn't mind waiting 2 weeks. I stopped caring about packaging a few years ago. All I want is the movie.

And while we're on the subject, the Bourne Collection is £12.97, X-men 4 Pack = 1-3 and Wolverine is £10.99, Jurassic Park is £11.97, Back to the Future is £16 while the The Lord of the Rings Trilogy - The Extended Edition is £39

Raiders
05-30-2012, 03:00 PM
I think 8's point was that it qualifies for free shipping in Amazon US, so you are winding up paying the same and waiting for it to come internationally. The packaging is irrelevant.

Raiders
05-30-2012, 03:05 PM
Actually, I'm not too sure which conversion rate you are using Duke, but 17 pounds is more like 26 dollars. So then you have international shipping and it isn't cheaper and you wait longer.

I looked at the LOTR for example, and 39 GBP is 60 USD. It is currently 50 USD on Amazon US.

Dukefrukem
05-30-2012, 04:17 PM
Yeh I f'ed up the conversions one the Alien one and I didn't look up the US price for the LOTR. But when I bought the Alien Anthology off AmazonUK, it was only £14.16 and cost me $27.90 USD (including shipping) and it arrived in 11 days. (this is why I thought it was cheaper)

A good example would be;
The X-Men Quadrilogy (X-Men, X-Men 2, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine [Blu-ray]) is £10.99 and $35.28 USD. If I Factor in the same shipping price as I paid for the Alien and Matrix sets... £3.08 you end up paying $21 USD buying it on AmazonUK rather than $35.28 on regular Amazon.

First Die Hard, now Aliens.

The stuff with Newt, Ripley or the Queen is good. Everything involving the marines which is the majority of the film is terrible. The acting and dialogue between them is so laughably bad especially Paxton who gives a Razzie caliber performance. Another annoyance is the use of the alien's acid blood. Cameron seems to forgot about it unless he wants to use it as a plot device.

I should also mention I watched the special edition (the one Cameron prefers) which added in a bunch of marine stuff.

But see, these prices aren't even that great of a "sale".

Bottle Rocket is $19.99 on both DVD and Blu-ray (not including shipping) and it's $23 on Amazon. $4 sale? Lame. It should be $9.99 on B&N.

I bought 4 movies today in store. It cost me $81 total with tax. I would have paid $103 for those same 4 movies from amazon.

Can you use more than one $5 coupon on one new Blu-Ray?

Nope only one $5 coupon off each blu-ray. So it's only really a good deal if you're buying $9.99 or $14.99 titles or using it on a title that is already on sale.

They have Pete's Dragon in the ad for next week at $17.99 (so $12.99 with coupon) and Moonrise Kingdom for $19.99 (so $14.99 with coupon). Not bad.

I've done so well keeping up this mantra as well. Kill Bill is my favorite film from QT, and I never bought a copy...then stupid me had to tell my wife the black friday best buy price. She almost slapped me when I said I wasn't getting hooked. To appease the wife I ordered them.

Which means The Whole Bloody Affair should be released sometime next week, so you're welcome.
