I'm sure Bamco is hoping to cash in on the hype of Bloodborne's release - something "new" and Soulsy for the non-PS4 crowd.

I'm not really sure what else is coming in 2015. For me, it's all about BB.
The only other thing on my radar is No Man's Sky.
I'll be picking the new DS2 up for PS4. Even though I didn't love the original DS2, I'm interested in the changes and also the new graphics. From what I hear, the original lighting engine is (mostly) intact, so the game should play and look more like it did pre-release, which is how it should have been released in the first place. The version they ended up releasing was pretty much a joke compared to what they had shown, and the game suffered for it.

Some new info on co-op/PVP from the official JP website.
There is an NPC/enemy called The Bell Maiden. When she is present in your area, she can summon red phantoms to invade you. Sometimes she will appear when you use a Bell of Summoning to summon a white phantom, and sometimes she will be found in the area.

I didn't watch it and I haven't watched a video of the game since the trailer.
I don't want everything spoiled. In the original DKS I loved the fear and intimidation when I came up against an enemy/boss for the first time. I think they're giving away too much with this one.
D_Davis
03-10-2015, 05:34 PM
They're actually not giving away much at all. FAR less than DS1 and 2. All the videos that have been released are just re-cuts of the same 15-25 minutes of footage that has been shown over and over, with each one having a few seconds of something different.

Any idea yet on length? Is it a "sink hundreds of hours into it" type like all the Souls games? Or is it a quicker experience?
I don't prefer either I am just curious.
D_Davis
03-10-2015, 06:46 PM
Don't know. No one really knows anything yet.
Seeing as it's from From, and it is a Souls game, I would bet on sinking hundreds of hours into it. NG+s has been confirmed, there are an infinite number of Chalice Dungeons to explore and trade (pretty much making the game never ending if you want it to), and tons of secrets.

According to the latest Edge preview/review, the differences between BB and Demon's Souls are more significant than the differences between Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. There are few weapons to find, but each weapon can be far more customized. The NPCs have more life to them. There are far fewer static enemies that simply wait for your approach. Now the enemies actively wander around and hunt you. The NG+ cycle is somewhat different, but the main post-game focus is on the Chalice Dungeons.
It sounds like it's a very different experience, that is just as good.
Also, Edge says it's the hardest one yet.

How did you implement the cooperative mode in Bloodborne? Is it a classic, drop in drop out mode where none can lose its character progress or is it like the Demon/Dark Souls' one?
People will need to support each other at times, but what From Software always want to go for is that Players are able to come into your game seamlessly without any warning. Players have to figure out what their motives are. Are they there for PVP or for coop? After you fulfill a certain criteria, you can actively open up your game. We wanted to avoid situations where players get so frustrated, they’ll stop playing. Coop is really important, but not offering it in a traditional sense and rather keep it a little unknown.

So, apparently, beast mode is back. Not a rumor after all.
From an item description:
Beast: Boosts effect from transformation. Temporary boost to transform (+20)
D_Davis
03-19-2015, 03:12 PM
A bit of good news and bad news. It's good news for people with good internet speeds, bad news for people with poor internet speeds, and really really bad news for people without the internet.
So here it goes.
The game leaked early - stores are selling it now. There are people who have played for 20+ hours already. All of them have items and have seen mention the idea of beast mode, and of player transformations. But not a single one has been able to figure out how to transform, nor has anyone actually transformed.
And that's because there are entire mechanics and parts of the game not on the disc.
From has purposefully left bits out so that there are surprises for people who actually buy the game, surprises that will exist even after reviewers have reviewed the game.
This makes sense, if you remember what From did to those who got early copies of Dark Souls - they invaded the games of those players with unbeatable red phantoms. From likes messing with people who break the rules.
So now we know that there is a 3gb patch coming day-one. This patch is adding a TON of content. It's adding so much content that the strategy guide has been delayed for 3 weeks so that ENB and crew can go back and add 120 PAGES to it! That's how much new content is coming right off the bat.
Now, I like this because I don't have to worry about my internet. However, there might be people who get the game without the internet. Of course, the Souls games are fundamentally different experiences both on and off line, so maybe all the content being added is all about PVP and co-op, so maybe the beast mode stuff is all online. But I won't deny that it sucks for people who may have trouble downloading the patch.
Also, I watched a video last night of the 3rd boss in the game (it's been taken down already), and it was the single greatest thing I've ever seen and heard in a video game. The 3rd boss in the game looks and sounds more terrifying and deadly than any boss in any of the previous Souls games.
D_Davis
03-19-2015, 03:22 PM
Oh yeah....also looks like world tendency is back!
In a recent Italian interview, Miyazaki confirmed that players will be able to revisit areas of the game during different times of the day and night. However, there is not a day-night cycle. He said there will be different and more powerful enemies at certain times of the day, but he wants players to figure out the system. Sounds like night will be black tendency, and day will be white tendency.
I'm wondering if the INSIGHT stat in the upper right-hand corner of the screen has anything to do with this?

03-19-2015, 03:51 PM
I'm confused. Can games be leaked/pirated on PS4? What do you mean stores are selling it now?

03-19-2015, 04:38 PM
Haha.
I tried that with Dark Souls 2.
Also, form the Amazon page of the strategy guide:
IMPORTANT UPDATE
=> The page count is increased from 400 to 528 pages.
=> The Collector's Edition guide is delayed to include important game changes applied through the Day-One-Update, ensuring that it will be up-to-date and that online-only elements are covered.
Thanks for your patience and understanding.
Never seen anything like this before. It's some kind of unprecedented move. Form is keeping all kinds of material back from early players and reviewers.
That is so awesome.

I needed some Souls today from anticipating Bloodborne so much, then suddenly realized I no longer own a PS3. As a result, I'm giving Lords of the Fallen a chance. I know you're all on Bloodbourne now, but Dark Souls has invaded my brain.
Finding not using a guide really helps with the atmosphere of the game for me. At Darkroot Garden atm. I'm sure I've missed a bunch of stuff, have no idea if this is where I'm supposed to be at this point, and am probably completely screwing up my character's stats. That's fun.
Still early days though. Will probably get stuck later on.

There are a few things about Dark Souls that I will never forget. One was meeting that first black smith and then discovering that sad strange creature through the room on the way to Darkroot Forest. I've never experienced that much atmosphere in any other medium.
I still think that parts of Dark Souls are the best thing ever, and I really doubt that anything will ever give me a similar feeling, but I keep hoping and chasing.
I still watch let's plays of Dark Souls on a weekly basis. While I'm a little tired of playing it, I still love watching it being played and seeing that incredible world in motion.

Lack of reviews for Bloodborne is starting to worry me a bit.
D_Davis
03-22-2015, 08:26 PM
Dude - you say that with every game. LOL.
Embargoes aren't a bad thing, and they are an industry standard.
Nothing to worry about.
Also - reviews on BB really shouldn't be done until the end of this week because of all the stuff being added with the day-one patch. Even all the people who have already beaten the game haven't experienced any PVP or Co-op at all, because the servers aren't up. So even if reviews were out right now, they wouldn't even be able to review some of the most crucial parts of the game.
So far, the only major complaint people have is the main load time. Every time you die, there is a 30-45 second load. That really sucks, because I'll be dying a lot! To think that I could en up seeing the loading screen for over an hour on my first day is pretty crappy. Oh well.
Hopefully that's something that can be optimized and fixed soon.
there are hundreds of youtube videos from streamers of early copies - go watch those and you'll get a very good idea if you'll like the game or not.
The importance of professional reviews really are a thing of the past with all the streaming footage we have now.
megladon8
03-22-2015, 08:44 PM
I'm very used to movies, where review embargoes are the ultimate warning sign.
D_Davis
03-22-2015, 10:16 PM
For games it's different. They do it so that all of the outlets - no matter how big or small - get a chance to review the game for the same length of time.
But again - professional reviews really don't mean anything any more with our ability to go online and watch people actually playing the entire game for hours and hours.
You can go on Twitch right now and watch people playing BB. A few minutes doing this will tell and show you far more than a dozen written reviews.
Idioteque Stalker
03-22-2015, 10:31 PM

I've been watching the "prepare to cry" walkthrough on youtube, and the interconnectedness of the first area is making me really happy. He's progressing quickly, but there's plenty of skipped pathways (sewer pig!), taking me back to the wealth of options available after first arriving in Firelink Shrine.
Still not a huge fan of the hub-world idea from Demon's Souls, but this seems like a fair compromise between the two. I'd rather map out the quickest way to a destination in Dark Souls than wait through load screens going both in and out of a hub world--even if the former takes longer.

One thing I hope is that there is actually some distance, and therefor tension, in between checkpoints/bonfires/lanterns or whatever.
That's one things that really killed the tension for me in DaS2. It seemed like every 100 feet or so there was a new bonfire, and I never even once had the feeling of finally getting to that first Blighttown bonfire. Nothing in DaS2 came close to that experience, because there were too many bonfires, and it was too easy to warp every where.

My area isn't doing midnight release, and I want to play tonight dammit. Weird because I picked up Dark Souls II at midnight. Titanfall was released the same day, mind you, but the majority of people at my store picked up DkSII anyway.
A part of me thinks it has to do with the PS4's lackluster exclusives, which would be understandable, if unjust.

They're bad. From is working to fix it.
However, everything else about it is masterful. My god, so tense.
D_Davis
03-24-2015, 04:27 PM
One thing I hope is that there is actually some distance, and therefor tension, in between checkpoints/bonfires/lanterns or whatever.
That's one things that really killed the tension for me in DaS2. It seemed like every 100 feet or so there was a new bonfire, and I never even once had the feeling of finally getting to that first Blighttown bonfire. Nothing in DaS2 came close to that experience, because there were too many bonfires, and it was too easy to warp every where.
So all of this is there, and then some. I'm already lost and filled with dread. Two things that never happened to me in DaS2. First boss down.

If the game keeps up on this level, I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up liking it more than Dark and Demon's Souls. As a matter of fact, I don't know if I can go back to the slow pace of the Souls games. It'll be interesting to try in a month or so when I get the new version of DaS2.

I love that feeling of being completely lost. You've ventured so far away from safety, every moment grows more and more tense as you get hounded by enemies of increasing difficulty. Your health is getting lower. You cannot turn back. Every moment you get closer to death. You are completely lost and there is no hope.
I've never had that feeling (or at least, in such an intense way) as with the Souls games.
I just ventured through miles of rat infested sewers and finally came up to the surface only to be beaten by a boss of unimaginable speed.
Instead of wanting to crush my controller, I felt relief that the struggle was over, and I could try again, smarter and with a better idea of what to expect.

Best bit of NPC interaction so far, following second boss:
Before fighting Father Gio-whatever, a little girl who'd lost her mom and dad gave me a music box. The boss must be her father because when you use the item during the fight he becomes "stunned" (a pretty genius and emotional twist on gaming tropes). The girl said I'd recognize her mother by her red brooch. Well, I found a dead body with a red brooch near the boss (presumably her husband, driven insane by the hunt or whatever), took it back eagerly anticipating some kind of "reward." Game mentions red brooch, I find red brooch, now the game should give me something sweet, right? Nope. The little girl just begins to cry because her mom and dad are dead. Now she just cries every time I try to talk to her.

Nearly all of the NPCs I've encountered so far are indoors. You can knock on doors or talk through windows, and even though they're lit up with red lamps or light peeking through under doors, they are still easy to miss. This one in particular is right outside the gate that connects the fountain area of Central Yarnham (where the brick ogre is beating on the door) to... well shit I forgot. I think it's the first statue ogre. Maybe sewers? Yarnham folds in on itself in a disorienting way.

Last night I was trying really hard to get through this super tough area. Hadn't had a lamp in ages, no shortcuts back, and had accumulated about 12,000 blood echoes (OK, from now on I'm going to call them souls - easier to type), by far the most I've had in the game. I finally see a chance to take a ladder back to the initial lamp in the area. I make a dash for and face off against a very tough enemy. I beat it. But then I'm killed from behind! Arrghghg. Oh well, I know where my souls will be. I respawn and make a dash back, only to find my souls are gone! Some enemy has stolen them. But which one? Where is it? Then BAM! Killed again! And then slowly, as the YOU DIED screen fades away, one of those fat-ass, POS crows saunters in from the side of the screen, turns and looks at the camera, his eyes glowing brightly, and then he starts flapping his dumb wings trying to fly. I swear to god he was actually mocking me.

Did you find the plague mask NPC in the opening area?
I've missed so much in this game! I just heard that the NPC is somewhere around Central Yarnahm, but I have no idea where.
I think I'm going to go through this first time without guides and stuff. I'll just miss lots of stuff, and then I'll dive into the Wikis and Guides on the next time.

Well, from I know so far, everything is connected - that is, you should be able to walk everywhere.

I totally feel like I'm in some Lovecraft town.
BTW - I don't think you can misuse the Madman items. You actually should use them, because things progress in the game as you gain them, and then you can spend them in the Hunter's Dream and you can spend them to summon people. It's a really interesting system. For instance, the doll in the Hunter's Dream doesn't come to life until you have 1 insight. So you can get that be either encountering a boss, or by finding a Madman item and using it. I think the next point level for something to happen is 10.
D_Davis
03-25-2015, 10:06 PM
Basically, the more Insight you have, the more things will happen, and the more things you'll have access to.

A few pieces of weirdness in tonight's play...
After beating the father I returned the brooch to the crying girl. I also went to the old lady and mentioned that I found a safe place for her (the Cathedral). After doing so I was rewarded by the Cathedral NPC with an item called "Triumph", however this item does not show in my inventory nor do I know what it actually was.
Next up immediately after leaving the cathedral I fought two enemies that looked like the Engineers from Prometheus of they were dressed in cloaks and top hats, and fought with canes.
After defeating them I found a new armor set, then this strange black hole appeared. I stepped into it, at which point a giant ethereal hand picked me up and lifted me into the sky. It said "Frenzy" on the screen, then I was thrown down to the ground and left with 1/4 health.
Man, this game.

I can't say yet if it's better than Dark Souls, but I already prefer it to Demon's Souls and most certainly Dark Souls II. I spent last night in Old Yarnham (made it to the boss but haven't beaten it yet), the Cathedral Ward (maybe my favorite area), and helping other players beat Father G.
There was this moment in the Cathedral Ward that, for a reason I can't really put my finger on, totally blew me away. I was walking down a long, foggy alleyway, surrounded by awesome indoor NPCs, and through the dank fog I spotted two enemies. One of those tall guys with the saws came strutting toward me while the other rifleman shot from a distance. With the fog and those specific enemies and the light creeping from under the doors... The atmosphere was just tangible and perfect. It was an unassuming moment, but the gameplay told a kind of story that I'll never forget and will likely be searching for in games far into the future.

I used to make lists at work of things to do in Dark Souls that night. Now, I'm doing the same thing with BB.
I beat one boss only dying twice and another only dying once. Was very proud.
Going back and forth about different areas at the moment. Tried to fight that big wolf in the Darkroot Garden a few times, but I think I need to level up first. In the Depths atm, trying to beat the Gaping Dragon.

Could be a bit of overly excited hyperbole, but I'm almost feeling like all of From's games have been a warm up to Bloodborne.

I feel the same way.
I think it's also because this game really connects with our love of weird fiction. For me, it especially connects because of its religious themes. I love religious-based fiction, and there is a ton of cool stuff in this.
BB is like a game made by Clive Barker, Lovecraft, and Thomas Ligotti.

Jeez I am having a LOT of trouble with Vicar Amelia.
I'm at my 7th or 8th attempt. I just can't get her much past 2/3 health. She hits me once then I don't have enough time to get away before she lays into me again and takes me out.
I'm also running out of fire paper.

03-27-2015, 05:13 AM
I haven't fought her yet, but I hear she only attacks in the front.
First minor complaint: although I do like the blood vial healing system, farming for vials seemed like somewhat of a chore. Sure, you could argue that if I'd played better I wouldn't have to farm for vials, but I simply found myself stuck and then had to do a couple runs through earlier areas. Never happened in Dark Souls.

It's true she only attacks in front, but staying in front of her is very difficult. She is constantly moving and spinning, and her long hair can make it difficult to tell whether you are in front or behind.
She also hits very, very hard. And her hit point count must be ridiculous.

I must've inadvertently missed her by going right rather than straight up the stairs a few times in the Cathedral Ward. Faced off against a couple of NPC hunters there and got some good loot. I'll go back soon and check her out because I think she may be next on my list.
D_Davis
03-27-2015, 12:46 PM
She's next on my list but I'm still exploring some other areas. I found my first couple of runes last night, but no way to equip them. I hear tale of some abandon workshop I'm trying to find. Feeling a little overwhelmed at the moment. It's great. I did some bullet and blood vial farming last night. That's pretty much how I spend the last few minutes of each session, so that I'm all stocked up for the next time.

Man, you people are still playing Dark Souls? Dunno if you heard about this new game called ... uh ... BlardBarn or something ... but, apparently it's right up all of your alleys. YOU'RE WELCOME, NERDS.
And now, I'm off to read this thread.

Went left instead of right at the top of the cathedral stairs and discovered an awesome-looking new area. It's nice to not hear stone under my feet for a change. Quickly killed one enemy. Got cocky. Died soon after. So it goes.
Edit: Holy shit that's a lot of guns.

Honestly I'm finding there is enough visual variety to tell what area you are in at any given time, while maintaining unity to keep it all feeling like you're in this enormous Victorian/steampunk city.
I was worried that it was all going to feel so samey that you couldn't tell where you were.
If it takes me all weekend to beat Vicar Amelia, but I do succeed, I will consider it a successful weekend!
Oh! Forgot to mention I got killed by a Death Dealer which resulted in me being transported to that end area. Talk about a nightmarish place - the music and the sounds of crying and wailing in pain. Felt like I had gone to hell.

From a few pages back:

12 regular bosses (beasts hand hunters), 5 Great Old Ones.
Plus 9 known chalice dungeon bosses.

I know that people are beating the game without even discovering all of the areas, and even the first area, the Cleric Beast is entirely optional.

Someone one Reddit who claims to have Platinumed BB claims that he has spent over 30 hours in the Chalice Dungeons and has discovered more than 20 unique bosses and a ton of random loot. Couple this with the discovery of covenants in the Chalice Dungeons, and it looks like those people complaining about lack of build diversity and PVP options will have to put their time into this portion of the game. Pretty amazing if true. It's almost like getting a complete game as an extra.

Yeah. Stay in front. Mid range. Bait the double hand smash with the shockwaves. Dodge and punish with charge attack. Repeat until she heals. Wail on her while she's healing. When she drops do a visceral attack on her head. Repeat.
Staying behind is is too unpredictable with all her cloth. You can't see her telegraph her moves. Staying front allows you to react to everything and her stacks are pretty slow.

Visceral attacks are like the reposte or backstabs. They work after a charge attack lands or if a boss has a week spot. The Vicors week spot is her head.

All the people complaining about how there isn't any magic in the game have only demonstrated that they haven't played enough. Full on soul spear and homing soul mass. Also, some kind of summoning powers now.
