That's adorable. There was a video (which I believe has since been taken down) or the trio from The Artist watching the nominations, and it was equally charming. I wish I could watch videos of every nominee receiving the good news
Yeah, I remember the one from a couple of years ago of Jeremy Renner's family, not himself, watching him announced as a nominee and flipping out and crying. Adorable indeed.
It's always the newbies who are having their lives being changed that are the most satisfying to see get award recognition. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova winning Best Song is still one of my favorite Oscar wins ever.

Haha:
At 99, Connie Sawyer is one of the oldest members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Conventional wisdom might say she's precisely the sort of voter apt to fall for “The Artist,” the French-made film about an old-time movie hero whose career runs into trouble with the advent of talkies. The movie is considered a front-runner for the best picture Oscar at the 84th Academy Awards on Sunday.
But Sawyer, who was a 15-year-old living in Oakland in 1927, when “The Artist's” story begins, wasn’t so enamored of the black-and-white film. The movie was enjoyable enough, she says, but she frankly doesn’t understand what all the fuss is about.
“Hasn’t anybody seen old films?” Sawyer asked in exasperation. “They’re easy to make and easy to act. All you have to do is overact. I saw a lot of those films in my day.”

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova winning Best Song is still one of my favorite Oscar wins ever. This post is part of my reasoning as to why giving nominations to say, Morgan Freeman or Meryl Streep every year is silly. Give someone else a chance at winning an Oscar, or at least give them the honor of being nominated.
And yes Hansard and Irglova winning Best Song plus their reaction to winning was really sweet and great to watch.
I loved that opening too. "The Propeller Guy!"Plus the fact that he ripped on The Postman, too. Awesome.

I've only seen 7 Woody Allen movies, for the record. Two of those are Annie Hall and Crimes and Misdemeanors, both which are indeed better than Midnight In Paris. My favorite of his so far is Sleeper from 1973.

SACHA BARON COHEN BANNED FROM OSCARS even though he's a member of the academy and stars in Hugo (http://www.deadline.com/2012/02/sacha-baron-cohen-banned-from-oscars-exclusive/)
I have no problem with them barring him from attending if he was gonna show up just to cheaply promote his movie. Coulda been funny, but it's a credibility issue for a ceremony desperately not needing another credibility issue. But why'd they let Ben Stiller do it to promote Starsky and Hutch?

Interesting. I've only heard of some of those movies.

RT scores are basically useless for anything released pre-2000. Small sample sizes and the reviews are usually retrospective pieces. That's not to say those films weren't actually the worst reviewed Best Picture nominees of their time, but you can't just base it on what a dozen critics wrote about the movies 50 years later.

I really hope Woody Allen attends to take his Original Screenplay award. The standing ovation that would follow, and Allen's speech may be the highlight.I've had to sit through boring corporate functions with lousy entertainment that seem to never end. I fully respect Woody Allen and Terrence Malick's decision to spend their Sunday night doing something better.
MadMan
02-25-2012, 11:38 PM
Malick and Allen both know they are not going to win. Also bear in mind that I'm pretty sure that Allen didn't bother to show the night Annie Hall won Best Picture, or when Hannah and Her Sisters won Best Actor (Michael Caine). Allen is thus smarter than Fincher, who showed up last year and just looked pissed the entire time. I know that people expect you to show up when you get nominated, but if you have been nominated before or know for certain you are not going to win then there is no point in going. Unless you actually enjoy that sort of thing.
Me I would go to the Oscars for the free stuff, if they still have free stuff, that is. The after parties are probably amazing, though, but I doubt you have to go to the ceremony to be invited to those so long as you are famous, of course.

And wait did they already say that he was winning Original Screenplay? How do you in advance? Not that I don't disagree.
Woody Allen definitely didn't show up for Annie Hall - pretty sure I've read he's opposed to competing against other filmmakers. That's why his movies never play in the main comp at Cannes. He did famously show up at the Oscars the year after 9/11, tho

Having now seen eight of the Best Picture nominees (I refuse to see that Extremely Loud crap), I liked six of them. And I like most of the acting nominees. On the eve of the awards, the Demian Bichir nod doesn't seem to have done him any favors. I don't think I saw a single piece or article on this guy after the nominations were announced.
I'm very disappointed that they didn't see fit to give the finale for the most successful franchise in film history a Best Picture nod. And not just because of that. I hope Harry Potter can at least sweep its technicals.
I swear I've seen footage of him attending with Keaton. Needs verification...

What? What does that have to do with it? Louis CK doesn't get paid millions to do something not in his trade and then go on poo-pooing that profession. That was the equivalent of Louis CK doing SNL for one night and then go on talking about how doing sketch comedy is soooooo easy and undeserving of the pay. It's disrespectful.
I really hate the classicism. Voice actors have it hard because they prefer celebrity names over actual voice talent these days. You take someone's job and make it harder for them to do theirs and then you shit on it? That's fucked up.

I'm pretty curious what happens as a result. It's already made $31 mill from its $15 mill budget, so everything's gravy.
I doubt anyone would've thought a silent movie would have a chance at $50 mill.
