Yeah, just posted this in the Celeb RIP thread. Very sad how sudden it was.

Gah, that's terrible. Perhaps I should honor him by taking in Mysteries of Lisbon this weekend?
Edit: Raoul* (?)

I just watched my first film of his, The Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting. What a unique and fascinating film! Definitely has me itching to check out more of the guy's work.
Sad to hear him go. RIP.

Oh my God. He had a few films in the works, too. I wish at the very least he could've finished them. This really sucks.

What's odd is that he had just beaten liver cancer, then he dies of a lung infection.

Watched La ville des pirates. One of the most "violent" films I've seen in how it subjects the audience to a difficult environment of characters and scenes. It might be laughable and ridicoulsy artsy-fatsy for the first ten minutes, then you realize Ruiz isn't trying to be obnoxious, but rather generous about feeding us this dream-like, extraordinarily surrealist world. There's not much to "get", and once you manage to comprehend (slightly) his language, you can pretty much get lost in the movie. That's a very particular way of filmmaking, and it definitely works on its own. Hughes Quester is great as the multi-personality, pirate-obsessed "Toby" and that guy with the moustache has an awesome moustache. I think there's some stylistic overdose (bizarre frame shots, color filters) but it is perfectly bearable. Enjoyed the music too, from the Hitchcock-esque thrilling brass/violin sweeps to the more illusory, magical bits. Overall I would sum up my experience with the film evoking this picture (http://www.artcyclopedia.com/images/PhilMusArt-Dali-Figure.jpg).
Has anyone seen Ruiz's take on In the Penal Colony?

Many of the lols came from the bearded guitar-playing hobo, so sad he bit the dust so early on. Fav utterance: Oh comme je déteste ces beaux paysages marins, ces magnifiques paysages marins. Je n'aime que les cochons, les vrais cochons!

There's a poor quality VHS rip on KG, but I haven't bothered with it.

Some guy. Directed a lot of bad movies with weird camera angles.
