That looks awful. Oddly, I wasn't immediately repelled by its awfulness, but when it kicked up the comedy angle, I cringed. I dig its topicality, though, and Alda and Affleck.

I hate myself for laughing at the trailer. At least Eddie Murphy didn't make another kiddy movie this time around. That's good, I guess.

Actually, it was the "Hey, its old-time Eddie Murphy" thing that intrigued me about the movie. I'll probably see it, just because.

"Yeah, but you're overlooking one important detail."
"What's that?"
"He's black."

Oldschool Eddie Murphy is a nice welcome back. I sure hope he does something R-Rated.
But yeah, pretty dreadful otherwise. There's gotta be something in a previous draft about how all the lower-class jobs involve immigrants and other races, but it was eventually erased, and now it's just a random Jamaican, Mexican, Black dude, and so on that really have no qualms about stealing $200 million.
Oh, I guess I should explain why I saw this. Ma got free tickets sent to her. Ma likes Old School Eddie Murphy. I don't say no to Ma.
Tea Leoni... Completely wasted in this. She has such good comedic timing, it's a shame that she's had a shitty career.

I know. He's a crass version of People and I'm contend with ignoring him and letting it be. There is a place for gossip in the media. I just think the world is better off with knowing less about Brett Ratner's penis and what holes it's been in.

Apparently this happened.
“Tower Heist” director and Oscar producer Brett Ratner apologized Monday for using a gay slur Friday night at a public screening of his new film.
The director lost his cool during a question and answer session for his new movie Friday night, and angered some in the audience by saying “rehearsal's for fags.”

This goes to another debate, and I'm not sure if Match Cut has had it yet, but I don't think he was demeaning homosexuals, just using the 'fag' term as 'idiots/stupid/dumbies" etc.
Of course he wasn't demeaning homosexuals. It's just a no-no word, and he is obviously not a man of grace.
Referring to them as "gays," however, is demeaning.
Winston*
11-09-2011, 01:26 AM
Does the word have those connotations when idiots use it? 'Gay' has them, but I've always heard fag as a stand in for weakness and effeminacy, i.e. stereotypically homosexual, rather than generally lame.
DavidSeven
11-09-2011, 01:29 AM
It could definitely be construed as demeaning. I doubt he consciously meant it as an attack, but I don't think "rehearsing is for idiots" is the exact statement he was trying to make either.
His public tearing down of Lohan and Olivia Munn was equally tactless. An epic failure of a week for that guy.
Edit: Agree with Winston*.

Hmmm. I don't see anything wrong with the analogy you're using either. Although I recognize the use of an adjective as a noun. In that case, I looked it up:
Gay
noun /gā/
gays, plural

Nobody's arguing that it's improper grammar. It's a demeaning way of referring to someone; paring them down to their race or sexual orientation as a way of identifying them.

What? gays = homosexuals. I'm not paring anything down. I'm directly refering to their sexual orientation.
I'm wondering if it's possible to survive a week on MC without someone picking apart someone else's post. Maybe it’s just me.

Exactly. You are paring them down "directly" to their sexual orientation. Do you call a straight person "a heterosexual?"
They use it too: Gays in the military, Alliance of gays and lesbians, etc.
But casual use is reductive and thus demeaning. You will also find "black" defined as such in a dictionary, but you probably shouldn't call people "blacks".

If you're referring to orientation, adjective is the way to go. That's the key difference. "He is gay" is okay. "He is a gay" less so, because it is no longer a descriptor, but a label. Which is a defining quality of reduction.
Sorry if you feel picked on.

In all seriousness, Brett Ratner is probably full of bullshit about his sexual conquests. I don't particularly care for Munn, but she's got to have better men lining up to court her.
And with a name like BRETT RATner, how could he have NOT grown up to be a total douchebag?
number8
11-09-2011, 03:17 PM
it's about tone and social connotation more than anything, duke. Language is a pretty powerful thing and the smallest of changes can make a world of difference.
"He's gay" comes across as "His sexual orientation is homosexual."
"He's a gay" comes across as "He's one of those people."
"So how many gay men are in this bar?" comes across as "I wonder how many of the men in this bar are homosexuals?"
"So how many gays are in this bar?" comes across as "There better not be a lot of homos here."
I don't think you should see this as picking on you, unless you actually don't care to know why other people find certain things offensive.

I might be the only defender of Ratner on this site, but I have to admit the material here is way beyond his grasping. I sincerely believe the story fascinating and see a lot of potential. They could have mixed up comedy with Heist movie. Too bad the result is more wavering than mixing.
I like the performance though especially Stiller in a straighter than usual role.
This was surprisingly a lot more entertaining than I was ever expecting. It's not exactly the funniest movie, though there's a few good laughs to be had. But what really makes this movie work is just how over the top and ridiculous things continue to escalate to, and it really keeps you wondering just what'll happen next. Not the overly-predictable, stupid comedy that I was expecting.
