This is tough. How many movies does a director have to make (or, how many of his portfolio do you need to see) before you can be comfortable calling him your favorite?

Sam Fuller - White Dog

EvWZK4zo8fA

I really like Sam Fuller, and have wanted to see this film for a very long time (its notoriety is well-documented). However, having watched this clip, which admittedly qualifies as "out-of-context", I can't help but pick up on the slight trace of unintentional humor.

Is it just me?

Maybe not automatically, but there's a big chance it might. To be honest, it's during the map room that I spontanenously think of the music accompanying that sequence.

The dialogue in the last bit is on-the-nose, but the whole film is bracingly so. It certainly has a unique cadence about the way it moves and confronts the issue, and I know there are people who found it off-putting (not morally but aesthetically), but goddamn do I love it. I do think in the context of the whole film that bit does play out better. Still, from the beginning of the clip to Winfield crying in the church, it's pretty virtuoso stuff even removed from context.

Sean Connery in The Untouchables

It's in Italian so apologies for that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaCNVU1B1o8

In any case, I grew up with Bond, but had never seen Connery give such a commanding performance and when he died, it was unbelievably powerful thanks to De Palma's brilliant direction (first-person POV can be great) and Morricone's unforgettable death theme. It was a grand, operatic, sort of melodramatic death sequence, but I think it totally worked. When people ask me what my fave supporting performance is by an actor, Connery's Malone always springs to mind as a contender.

A bit overwrought, sure, but the fear and confusion in Ribisi's eyes, the nonchalant way the other soldiers kept wiping the blood away from his wounds, and the almost uninterested, going-through-the-motions way Edward Burns kept injecting him with morphine just set me on edge.

It felt surreal. I was uncomfortable watching it.

http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj240/keltz629/speed.jpg

For some movies, you read the plot summary and it instantly tells you it's something special. This was such an example. It's a great action classic which, admittedly, shows some lack of inspiration when it goes trainbound, but I was sold by that point anyway.

It was the first movie I had bought in the USA on VHS back in 1994, and I felt compelled to show it to anyone, everyone so lots of folks in the Campus dormitory where I resided saw it. It was the last theatrical release I saw in Belgium, two days before I departed for the USA. I showed it to my dad who felt it was enjoyable, but that it couldn't quite match anything Fellini had done. Yeah, ok. Thanks for your contribution pops.

Back when this movie came out, I was going through some really tough emotional things. It was playing at one of those discount theaters near where the bus dropped me off after work. For a solid month, I went to that theater every work day and saw The Lion King for $4.

It sounds silly, but back then, it might have been the only thing that kept me afloat. I will always have a place in my heart for the film because of that.

Neither of them are very good actors, yet everyone adores them.

That leaves me wondering who would meet your criteria of good.

There's a mistake a lot of people make in thinking someone's default on screen persona, their presence, is the sum total of their ability. (Sometimes, performers make the same mistake and produce stuff that plays too heavily into the persona, like Hanks did with Larry Crowne, Morgan Freeman did with Bruce Almighty, and Sandra Bullock did with Miss Congeniality). For audiences, that mistake is compounded when they don't like the persona or it doesn't personally resonate, or it simply gets overplayed.

Freeman and Hanks are interesting because we're talking about two guys who started on the low end of television: Freeman with Sesame Street and soap opera and Hanks with a broad based 80s sitcom.

I interpret "good acting" as the ability to blend, to appear natural and unaffected at any given point. A good actor can give depth to thin material and bring new angles and interpretation to good material. The really special ones can play with some range.

So if you look at stuff like Street Smarts, Clean and Sober, Driving Miss Daisy, and Seven, I don't know how you can walk away and say Freeman "isn't very good." Likewise with Hanks after viewing Splash, Big, Toy Story, and Saving Private Ryan. In each of those movies, I think a case can be made that a large part of their success is directly tied to the performances of their stars.

I've seen Seven. He was adequate in it. I've seen Toy Story and Saving Private Ryan of Hanks' work, and again, he's fine, but he's not great. He's a movie star, not much of an actor. Kinda like Harrison Ford.

Ford's a good actor who became a bad one, because he seems to have just lost interest somewhere in the mid 80s. He gave terrific performances in both Witness and Mosquito Cost. After that, he got increasing lazy and wound up doing stuff like Air Force One and Firewall.

So, back to the subject at hand: Who is "good," then, in your mind?

I'll go back to Forrest Gump and say that nearly any actor that took that role would've botched it. If it weren't for Tom Hanks' great way of being able to blend comedic, dramatic, and natual emotions to his roles, the movie wouldn't work at all. There's only a handful of actors that can do this.

And Klaus Kinski is not one of them. But the man can play insane like no other.

Ezee E
08-08-2011, 08:33 AM
With that, I tend to think that Tom Hanks is actually an overlooked actor when discussing the best actors around, especially when it comes to stars. Unfortunately, he has picked a few boring movies as of late. The Da Vinci Code movies along with a few others that I'll never both with, it looks like his last good work was in '04 with Spielberg and the Coen Brothers.

Cast Away is another fine performance that not many actors could do. Just him for probably 85% of the movie, and he makes a volleyball into a memorable/successful character.

I wonder how this Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close will turn out.

I realize I've never walked out of a movie, although there were movies I was dragged to as a kid that I wanted to leave. But then I wouldn't be able to get home, and I didn't want to be stuck in the lobby with nothing to do. So I sat through them and realized then and there that I could do what most good or at least decent critics do: rip them endlessly and bash them a lot, and warn others not to waste their time and money. Even when I worked at a movie theater I was careful not to go see anything that looked really terrible, despite the fact that I could get in for free.
