Least Favorite Adaptation: Jurassic Park. I like Jurassic Park, the movie and the book. About all they have in common are some character names, an island, and dinosaurs. Such a shame a terrific adult novel was slimmed to a teen adventure film.

huh? The same motives were there.

Both involves a theme park
Both had the same "science theme" behind the dinosaurs
The dinosaurs escape the same
Dennis tried to steal the eggs during a storm
pretty much every major event was the same....

The only thing that was vastly different was the ending.

My pick is a double edged sword, because they were so highly acclaimed and so incredibly medicore. Angels and Demons was both the better book and better movie. The recreation of the Vatican was totally awesome.

Controversial opinion alert!

Least favorite book adaptation: Eyes Wide Shut

http://hyperstition.abstractdynamics. org/archives/eyeswideshut_redemption.jpg

I suppose this demands an explanation. I could probably find a worse movie, but I read Arthur Schnitzler's Traumnovelle a few months ago, so it's on my mind. Most of the events are there in the movie, but Kubrick just drags them out and made a short, breezy novel (I read it in three days) into a unnecessarily long and dull movie. I would also like to see a film version of this book that's actually set in the 1920's, where I think the decadence depicted would make a little more sense than it does in Kubrick's ultra-modern world.

Plus, there's a lot more dancing in the book.

LAME ALL CAPS JOKES ARE FUNNY IF YOU'VE READ THAT BOOK THOUGH, RIGHT? :P

They are :D

Sorry you didn't like it. It's still one of my go to reads. I love the character of Owen so much. And the all caps thing, i actually think its a great device - part of how Owen is so easily noticed by everyone despite his height.

I laughed a lot during the Hitchhiker's Guide movie. I really liked Mos Def and the dolphin song and the Stephen Fry stuff and the falling whale. I don't know, I'm a big fan of the book and I recognize it was very different. But I thought it was in the spirit of the orginal.Same here, and I think maybe Davis or Sven (I can't recall which) also enjoyed it a lot.

DAY 16: FAVORITE BOOK ADAPTATION

http://www.shadowlocked.com/images/stories/LISTS/iphonemoviekiller/008_Jaws.jpg

Several qualify for this category, but I'm going to go with an adaption of a mediocre/merely solid book at best that turned out to be a great movie. I'm speaking of Jaws, which I actually recently got the chance to watch again on the Forth of July. Other picks would be Jurassic Park (yes the book is better, but I still love the movie adaption), The LOTRs (both movies and books are great), and Watchmen (more of a graphic novel, sure, but still the movie was really good and the novel is of course brilliant).

Day 17: LEAST FAVORITE BOOK ADAPTION

http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj82/espectrus_2008/collector/2zssj2x.jpg

Sticking with Spielberg made movies, I'm going to have to pick The Lost World. The book is semi-smart, enjoyable, and actually a good read. Its one of Crichton's more overlooked books, but I really like it. The movie adaption though is a mess, and is really goddamn stupid. It does have its moments, but the stuff in San Diego comes off as a failed Godzilla ripoff. Really the big game hunter was really badass-having even more of him in the movie wouldn't have hurt. If it wasn't for Goldblum coming back for more money, this would have been even worse.

Also I decided to pick books that I have read that were adapted into movies. Sure I try and judge the movie differently from the book it was adapted from, but I still usually like to examine the original source material.

Heh KF I've heard that Congo is a complete disaster in every single way. And yet, I'm tempted to watch it anyways. I like the book though-its really entertaining, and well written like most of Crichton's works.

Oh and I actually like Romeo + Juliet more than the 1968 version.

Also eternity wow I couldn't even make it through that entire scene from Twilight. What the fuck is the appeal of those books and those movies? I don't get it.

The script we shot was very much based on the last draft that Douglas (Adams) wrote. I was also able to make available to Jay Roach and Karey Kirkpatrick many back story notes and ideas from Douglas' hard drive and Karey also had of course the book and the radio series to work with. All the substantive new ideas in the movie, Humma, the Point of View Gun and the "paddle slapping sequence" on Vogsphere are brand new Douglas ideas written especially for the movie by him.

This, of course, doesn't mean you have to like it. I'm just stating it for the record.

Favorite book adaptation: From Here to Eternity. A great movie in its own right and worlds better than the book, which I found stilted and dense.

_d0hEzXrWT4

Least favorite: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Cheating here because I haven't actually seen this movie (and I never will).

The book is a one of a kind experience, and 90% of its appeal is in Thompson's descriptions of surreal horror and clever humor. I know this movie has its fans, but even watching this trailer it seems like a thin, cheap imitation and far too situational.

Runner up would be Sin City, where two creative, bright guys completely (and bizarrely) misinterpret the differences between the mediums of comic books and movies.

True enough, but in my case, and in defense of my naming it as my least favorite, I don't hate on it or even think it's all that terrible. But what it is is a massive disappointment, given the source material and what I felt like was a huge missed opportunity. I felt that only isolated elements of the film were indeed in the spirit of the book and that in those crucial times when it really counted, the film fell flat and the characters suffered as a result.

I suppose I should give the film a third viewing (as well as giving the books another umpteenth read), but I honestly don't see my opinion changing much.

About the only hate I'm down with is reserved for all those Speed Racer critics.

Granted, when asked what kind of movies I love I never bring this one up, but I genuinely think this is a fairly intelligent skewering of Hollywood romantic tropes, an aspect which feels really obvious to me but I haven't really seen anybody else bring up- people seem to take it at face value. Severely underappreciated.

Can you explain this?

The story is being narrated by Old Rose, who is an unreliable narrator- a point explicitly brought up by the film; it's not a stretch to assume that she's bending the entire story to her favor. That's why she and Jack are flawless romantic heroes, why Billy Zane is cartoonishly evil, why the dialogue feels laboriously over-written and cliché, why this romance is given bigger emphasis than the whole friggin' ship sinking, and why she recounts events she couldn't possibly have witnessed. Old Rose is telling the story through rose-tinted glasses, altering it to please her and tossing out what she didn't like, and she tells it through the medium she's familiar with (remember, she's an actress): cliché Hollywood romantic films. Titanic isn't a straight romance, it's satire.

Damnit, I can't find the scene as a whole, but my pick (for around these parts more then anywhere else) is Philadelphia. It's in your face, and for the time it came out, it should've been.

But the opera scene is masterful, and I seek anyone to criticize it. Unfortunately, I could only find a minute long version of it. The rest were all dubbed.

I don't buy it, Stan. As I recall, Cameron was very interested in historical accuracy (in some respects), such as recreating the ship in detail and casting actors who physically resembled the real people they were playing. I don't think we're meant to believe that Rose is back in the present day telling her audience about the two guys spotting the iceberg (which, as you say, she wouldn't have witnessed). I think Cameron just wanted to depict that scene and didn't give much concern to how it fit into the narrative.

Not exactly ironically, because the movie certainly sympathizes with Rose, but it definitely doesn't ignore her vanity and delusions, and so through her recounting of the story it's critical of her (and, in a way, how bad romantic films foster these kind of delusions in people's minds). Anyway, I kinda like that song.

I don't really know about Cameron's thought process in making the film, except that he's a big fan of the ocean (as seen in the two dreadful documentaries he made this decade), but I'm not very concerned with it. Death of the author, and all that. And yes, she's not narrating to us the present-day stuff, only the 1912 stuff to the guys who found the ruins.

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying I don't think she's narrating the stuff she didn't witness to anyone. I think Cameron just stuck those scenes in there because he wanted to, not to show what an unreliable narrator Rose is.

Boy, that's a reach. It's clever, but too clever by half.

Titanic is three hours long. Rose bookends the movie. That's a helluva lot of time to fill without touching on the greater satirical context you're supposing this movie has.

I think theories like this rise up out of Cameron's later movies because he's so artful and precise on the technical end, but the writing is just so shallow and desultory. Because obvious thought and care went into the presentation, we want the content to have the save level of meaning.

But it just doesn't. Occam's razor, Freud's cigar and all that. Sometimes bad writing is just bad writing.

I must admit - that superband the blues brothers went up against at the end was pretty amazing. I stopped counting the who's-who's of blues/new orleans jazz that were in that band after I ran out of fingers.

Fixed. :)And to think I edited my post to give your choice a shout-out.

And for what it's worth, I don't consider any of my choices outright bad, otherwise I wouldn't like them. They're just guilty pleasures because I recognize how ridiculous and/or tasteless they are, as well as the poor reputation most of them have. Well, Highlander 2 is probably just bad, but I kinda love how much it botches the mythology of the already-lame original.

DAY 18: FILM THAT IS YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE

nGumUFmmVBI

Anyways, I'm not really even sure I should be choosing this movie for this category, because I will forever be a fan of it. It’s funny, weird, has a hot Asian chick who knows kung fu, and you can tell that Eddie Murphy was having fun while picking up a pay check between 48 Hours and Beverly Hills Cop. It’s The Golden Child, from 1986. Unfortunately I cannot find my favorite scene, but its when Eddie Murphy gets out of a tough spot by hugging the bad guy and shouting "My dear, sweet brother Numsie! He has forgiven me!"

Some other favorite lines:

"So, I gotta go to Tibet, because I'm the Chosen One. Why can't anybody choose me to go to the Bahamas?"

"My dear, sweet brother Numsie!"

Chandler Jarrell: They're not gonna let me on the plane with this 2 foot knife.
Kee Nang: Yes they will.
Chandler Jarrell: No they won't. I'm going to jail.

"How many have survived this test?" "None." "None?! None!?"

Bah, where are all the esoteric cult films, that's what a category like this is best for. Derek has the right idea, and Dreamdead deserves a nod for recognizing that old favorite. Too many esoteric cult films are often too genuinely interesting or intriguing to be called "guilty pleasures." Better off mentioning stuff like Bad Teacher, that have zero true aspirations but is highly watchable.

huh? The same motives were there.

Both involves a theme park
Both had the same "science theme" behind the dinosaurs
The dinosaurs escape the same
Dennis tried to steal the eggs during a storm
pretty much every major event was the same....

The only thing that was vastly different was the ending.

The characters were all switched around. In the book, Alan loved kids and wanted some of his own, while Ellie did not. The grandpa was an old bastard who didn't like his grandkids.

The book opens with a dino eating a baby's face...it's very adult in nature, the movie is a tween adventure. It annoys me. I still like the movie though.

My aunt sent a recording to us on VHS so I first saw this movie at 8 and oh man, it was so bad and so good. It's Can't Stop The Music, the Village people musical and the first ever winner of the Razzie worst picture. I often have this first video stuck in my head, oh the late 70s early 80s. For whatever reason, I'm not a crier. Rudy is as close as I come. I'm a sucker for a great sports story, and despite my hatred of Notre Dame, and despite my knowledge that it's a mediocre movie, there's something about that ending, with the music, and his parents in the stands watching, that gets me every damn time. It's to the point where I won't watch it any more because the lump is too painful.

I think he is.That's cool. I think he was really good, but at times it did help that he was working with Ford and Hawks. He has a natural presence, and was truly charasmatic.

At some point I will get to Red River and the Ford calvary trilogy, plus Donovan's Reef, The Longest Day, and a couple other fairly famous ones I haven't seen yet.

Well, as you know, I love that movie. But no, that's not a vibe I get with her. It's her wit, her timing, her integrity I admire.

I think her looks are unorthodox, certainly not conventionally sexy, but in that scene, when she sits down with her leg exposed and extended, and later when she's talking to Henry Fonda with their cheeks pressed together, I find her sexy as hell.

Oh, and rep to Boner for the Apt Pupil mention. On my Facebook entry I mentioned that it was a close runner-up for least favorite adaptation. What a terrible hack job.

Nice picks. I should have pondered more before reusing a pick. Actually, the bell-making scene in Andrei Rublev and the ending of The Sacrifice are pretty inspiring too, in the same way as Nostalghia: acts that are world-transforming and revelatory by virtue of their spirit and their will to express that spirit, transcendent because they are not rationally connected to any desired effect. And Andrei Rublev is also inspiring in the sense of making the struggle through the turmoil and heft of life—and the struggle to understand and express the sublimity in it—seem worthwhile and achievable. And The Mirror is inspiring in the sense of inspiring me to see the sublimity in the moment, memory, time and phenomenal experience. Good old Tarkovsky.

I don't usually pay attention to music much in films, but with Goodfellas I think Scorcese did an extraordinary job of matching popular, well known songs to the narrative. He's always done that pretty well, but he never did it as well as he did it here. I can't think of that opening line "Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be a gangster," without immediately thinking of the song that accompanies the scene.
