I'm afraid this category largely conflates with 'best animated film' for me. Therefore, I will be deliberately obtuse about the definition for two days in a row and interpret 'best children's movie' as 'best movie about children'.

Not only did I see Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey in theaters when I was a kid, but growing up I watched this movie a ton. I loved the golden retriever the best, just because they are adorable dogs and because the one in this movie was really cool. Really though I haven't viewed it in years, but I'm sure it would hold up if I ever decided to revisit it. Sure there are other choices, but this one would be the most starkly personal one I've gone with so far.

If I were to respond to my favorite movie when I was a child, then Star Wars would have to be the answer. If I were to respond to what movie is my favorite movie that I also enjoyed as a kid, then Raiders of the Lost Ark easily wins. Those two films (as well as Empire and to a lesser extent Jedi) got watched countless times in my youth.

Amelie is one of the few movies that actually does warm my heart and make me giddy to watch. It's popularity surprises me, as it's usually one of the first foreign movies that gets other people interested in foreign movies. So the "Match Cut" in me makes me wonder if it is that good.

You're so right on this. Hoop Dreams is mine as well, and its such an example of the whole being so much more than its parts. There are no clips that can show why it's so heartbreakingly awesome.

I also credit Hoop Dreams with being the reason I started watching movies differently. In a year that had Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, The Lion King, Ed Wood and The Shawshank Redemption i simply never expected a documentary to be my favorite film of the year. It was very surprising to my 22 year old self :)

Also, work like this is why I hate screenwriting classes. Screenwriting classes would loathe these three scenes that go well over five minutes with only two people talking the entire time. Anyways, The Godfather is the next adaptation after The Shining and Goodfellas which have already been listed in my challenge. The book and hte movie are both masterpieces on their own. Whereas the movie has its great tone, atmosphere, etc., the book takes small instances in the movie and opens them up into something that the movie would never be able to do. Each of the deaths here is basically its own chapter, and they're each very good to read.

Umm nor do I.

So why would I need to have read the book?

Dukefrukem
07-05-2011, 02:08 PM
So why would I need to have read the book?

Well, I look at it as books being far more pesonable than movies. We can all agree that not all books translate to good screenplays, musicals, video games, etc, as is the case in reverse. Sometimes a story is only great on one medium. I find the types of books people read (and more importantly the ones people love most) define their personality better than the previous mediuims I listed.

To me, when I read a book that I really enjoy, very little could deter me from the movie, even if it's a bad movie. My choice: the Relic, I loved the book so much, it became motivation to read more from those authors and to read more just in general. Therefor it helped define the meidum for me. The movie isn't really that great, but it's my favorite because of the meaning behind it. If the catagory was "Best Book adaptation" my choice would be different.

Dukefrukem
07-05-2011, 02:11 PM
So I guess the short answer is I hope people's "favorite book adaptation" would have a strong personal connection between both the book and movie.

So I guess the short answer is I hope people's "favorite book adaptation" would have a strong personal connection between both the book and movie.

But what if I didn't like the book much but love the film? I treat them separately because I don't like letting them interfere with each other. Atonement is a decent film, but compared to my reaction to the book, it is fairly crap. But, in filmic terms, the film is moderately successful and I believe should be treated as such.

My approach to the category is that I know of the inherent limitations to adapting an existing source and I picked the most profound, greatest film that came from a written (non-play) source.

I don't have an answer for that I guess. I certainly have movies that fall into that catagory, but I don't put them above my favorite book adaptation nor the movie I felt does best job adapatation a book.

If the book is crap and the movie is great, I take that as falling to the translation between mediums barrier I refered to earlier, or a better creative eye from the directors standpoint.

Favorite play adaptation: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

I had to use Winston*'s link, and even so there were no movies there that I both love, and have seen recently enough to trust my judgment on. I'm going with the one with the most probability that I'll continue to enjoy on a second viewing, but it's definitely the pick I feel the least strongly about.

Favorite book adaptation: Solaris

That's the Steven Soderbergh version. Turns out the large majority of my favorites are original screenplays, and the few ones that weren't I'd already picked in other categories, leaving me with only this or Paths of Glory.

Least favorite book adaptation: I dunno... I guess Twilight was pretty wretched. Feels like a rather populist, impersonal pick though.

Oh dear god, yes. This.

Thanks for posting this on the off chance I forgot and accidentally picked something that doesn't suck quite as much as this does.
Also starring Sam Rockwell... Hmm...

Not my least favorite movie based on a book, but the movie that removed the most stuff I liked from a book and replaced it with the most stuff I disliked.

Also starring Sam Rockwell... Hmm...

I love me some Sam Rockwell and really, this thing has a pretty solid cast all-around, but it's embarrassing and awkward. The book is hilarious, but I was ready to walk out on this halfway through. NOT funny.

I laughed a lot during the Hitchhiker's Guide movie. I really liked Mos Def and the dolphin song and the Stephen Fry stuff and the falling whale. I don't know, I'm a big fan of the book and I recognize it was very different. But I thought it was in the spirit of the orginal.

I'm a big fan of John Irving and A Prayer For Owen Meany is one of my favorite books...to see what they did to it in this abomination makes me shake with rage sometimes.

This would hold almost no weight without that avatar, yet with it, I'm almost compelled to give this a rewatch.

I READ HALF OF OWEN MEANY AND THEN THREW IT AWAY. LATER A PRETTY GIRL AND I WENT TO SEE SIMON BIRCH AND WE WALKED OUT AFTER FORTY MINUTES.

LAME ALL CAPS JOKES ARE FUNNY IF YOU'VE READ THAT BOOK THOUGH, RIGHT? :P

Day 17 - Least Favorite Book Adaptation

I really like Hitchhiker's Guide. And I really like Choke. Hmph.

I could say Brief Interviews with Hideous Men for this. I could say The Scarlet Letter. I could say The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I could say V for Vendetta. But instead, I'm going to go with the easy one. Instead of picking through terrible movies based off great books, I'm going to pick a terrible movie based on a terrible book.

Favorite chick flick:

gBD4a5GndHk Good one...

I don't suppose you're familiar with this list: Cinefantastique's Top 20 Chick Flick Horror Movies (http://cinefantastiqueonline.com/2008/04/retrospective-top-20-chick-flick-horror-movies/)? I only bring it up not because I doubt you but because Tomb of Ligeia (the list's #1) really is another good one, and (if Wright's Pride and Prejudice didn't exist) would've been a good choice for me.

DAY 17: Least Favorite Book Adaptation
A real answer would be The Haunting 1999, but I can't help myself now that I see this scene on YouTube:

Jane Eyre 2011

I'm sorry, this scene is so leaden. I thought so in the theater and I think so now:

Mehhh. I know i know i know, the movie took the book in a complete different direction, but there's some good stuff in the movie. The dualing T-Rex scene I thought was classic Spielberg tension. I can totally understand this choice though.

Least Favorite Adaptation: Jurassic Park. I like Jurassic Park, the movie and the book. About all they have in common are some character names, an island, and dinosaurs. Such a shame a terrific adult novel was slimmed to a teen adventure film.
