There is only one action movie and its name is Die Hard.

xPb9-OK9r9I

I rewatch this every year at Christmas. This is my answer for Favorite Action Movie. Die Hard is my favorite action movie because every time I have seen it, its thrilling, well paced, hell even well acted, and the action sequences are near perfect. I'd say its one of the few near flawless action movies I've ever seen, and anyone who bashes the genre ignores this movie, Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), John Woo movies, James Bond, etc. I don't care that I'm copying someone's answer, because for me there is not any other answer.

As for Favorite Drama, I'll stir shit up a bit by picking The Life Aquatic.

Spoilered is the best scene in the entire movie. I almost broke down in tears after watching this scene. So goddamn powerful, moving....perfect.

IPMf8G8Pi5o

From what I've seen, Terminator 2 was James Cameron's last great movie. Aliens is another fantastic choice.

I've mentioned it before, but I'll do it again. T2 is the perfect action movie. James Cameron is the master of setting up an action movie. Rarely can anyone else set up the geography, uniqueness of sequences, and also tell a separate story to each action scene in the movie.

In Terminator 2, he keeps building the suspense, what's at stake, and destruction. Here, early in the movie, is something that's better then in probably 70% of most action movies. The building tension of the two Terminators getting closer to John Connors in its own rather good search scene (with an excellent score)... Only for it to progress into a chase scene.

Aliens is also along these lines. Too bad Avatar doesn't really follow suit

This.

My list would be T2, the Matrix and Die Hard. But T2 beats them all by a pretty wide margin for the reasons E stated. I really don't think this movie can ever be matched. I said it before, and then I retracted it, and now I'm saying it again: T2 is way better than the original Terminator.

So I will present to you my favorite scene out of the special edition, which shows Cameron using a combination of practical effects, brilliant camera work and creativity. It should have NEVER been cut out of the theatrical release.

I agree. I have problems with some of the dialogue and performances in T2, but on a story and filmmaking basis, it's the quintessential American action film along with Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I've been doing this on Facebook, so I haven't been posting my choices here as well. But I will interject here and say that my response to 'Best Action' kind of surprised me. I went through all the possible responses that I could think of. And I realized that I really did like Inception more than any of them. Raiders of the Lost Ark certainly gave me pause. And it probably does have better action sequences. But as a complete film, I think I have to give the edge to Inception. It takes me further than Raiders emotionally and intellectually.

The only other film that really gave me pause was Antoine's choice, The General. Again, the action sequences are utterly amazing. And I really do think Keaton should be considered an action star as well as a comedian. But again, if I'm truly honest, that film ultimately doesn't mean as much to me personally. The pleasures are enormous. The artistry is superior. But ultimately, I guess I have to admit I don't take a lot away from that film beyond that.

So, yes, if we're talking about best action sequences, I might select something else. But if I'm just talking about best action film, then I personally think Inception raised the bar. It's hard to place recent films in proper perspective and we generally shy away from doing so lest we later seem foolish for being caught up in the emotion of recent experience. But that's where I'm at right now. And I don't mind making that assertion in a silly Facebook meme.

don't necessarily mean to start up shit, but I just watched "The Terminator" for the first time this week and I disliked it quite a bit. But I'm curious to know why it's actually considered good. It seemed to me it was just lots and lots and lots of running away. Gonna watch T2 soonish. Also this week I watched for the first time escape from new york and it was way better then Terminator.

Ezee E
06-25-2011, 02:51 AM
T2 is better then Terminator in every aspect.

Spinal talked about the sequences, but it's much more then that. I feel like you actually are rooting for the good guys here, you strongly hate the T-1000 (strongly played by Robert Patrick). Linda Hamilton's character is as important to action films as John McClain, Ellen Ripley, and Indiana Jones. The fact that there's a whole prison escape sequence without an explosion adds to how good of an action movie it is.

Most horror movies are enjoyed highly the first time you see it, but then decrease in value afterwards. I think The Shining gets significantly better, and more importantly, scarier on rewatches. I don't think there's any other horror movie that can be dissected as much as The Shining either.

NOTE: This clip has a created score, which is pretty corny.

I love this film's tracking shots. As it goes on, they start to linger more and more, creating the unsettling effect of the camera being like a creepy stalker following these kids, and we are being forced to watch along. It makes the most mundane actions, like developing a picture or driving a car or just walking, carry a great deal of weight and feel like they're a piece of a larger, more important mosaic- which is, in a way, what the movie's about.

Unfortunatly I have only skimmed them. I only seem to run across actual copies when I'm broke. Lol

I've read up on the plot synopsis online enough to think they are prolly superior to the film.

They've released/re-released all the volumes over the past year or so. And, yes, it is awesome. However, I must admit to rolling my eyes at the last couple pages.

But really, you think it works as a straight horror film? It's more of a black comedy & art-scene satire than anything, with lots of ingenuity and energy but an unmistakable air of amateurishness as a horror film. Of course, in Ferrara's hands these are all good things, but it's a stretch to say the film works as a straight genre piece in the same way that Halloween/Rosemary's Baby/The Haunting et al do, let alone that it's as good as it gets.

I had trouble thinking of examples when this day started in the thread, but if you really mean this ... what the hell?

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, East of Eden, Sweet Smell of Success, The Verdict, You Can Count on Me? I dunno, nearly every play written in the 20th century?

Yeah, genres are constructs, things made up to ease conversation (and sales!) but c'mon. You've been living in that pulp mag forest too long and now the trees have disappeared on you.

Netflix doesn't have many 5 star ratings from me in the Thrillers genre. I guess everything that I thought was a thriller is classified as something else.

With that, my choice will be Misery, a movie that I think is overlooked in any and all discussions. A clear ode to Hitchcock as far as "the bomb being under the table" and the use of props, the use of secondary characters, and the protagonist being in the wrong place at the wrong time... Sadly, the scene that I want to choose, which is when Annie Wilkes notices something out of place, couldn't be found on youtube. Instead, I'll go with a scene that puts the Saw series to shame, for you actually care about the characters at hand. It's more then just brutality.

Russ

I think what's really silly is taking these sorts of threads too seriously. On any given "day", I can think of several possible candidates for each category (my "favorites" are not carved in stone; they may change depending on mood). Being flexible with your choices on any given day is what makes it fun and gives it a bit of intrigue.

EDIT: I do agree that this one of the more useless categories, tho.

Um, OK. But "foreign film" isn't a genre. I was just saying that unlike many who view movies more casually and do treat foreign cinema as a separate section of film, we don't really do that so "foreign" kind of blends away.

Neither are "movies that make me cry a lot." Who cares?

Fair enough. I can't think of any straight dramas that I love, as most of them I consider more closely tied to their genre. Like Boxer From Shantung is a great drama, but it's a better Martial Arts film; and like Rocky, a great drama, but it's also a sports movie.

The Young Poisoner's Handbook is a great drama, but it's also a dark-comedy, or true-crime.

And given how many days there are, I'd rather just hold out.

Mangal Pandey and Krrish disagree with you.
I haven't seen either film, but if the YouTube clips I just watched are any indication, they would not change my opinion of Bollywood. This scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_OLlEO_cVQ) reminds me of a Bollywood film I have seen, Rang De Basanti. Ostensibly, it's about a group of young men who want to avenge their friend who was killed due to government corruption, but the story is routinely interrupted when the characters hear their favorite song on the radio and just have to stop and dance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sF23eiULt4)! And Mangal Pandey... we're being oppressed by the British Empire? Who cares?! Let's dance!

And, typical of a Bollywood film, Mangal Pandey is over 150 minutes long. I bet at least 30 of those minutes consist of songs or musical numbers that don't serve the story at all. That's the worst thing about Bollywood movies. The musical numbers are just randomly thrown in and often it is not even the main characters who are singing or dancing. American musicals are so much more organic. The songs flow with the story and have meaning.

This is a good opportunity for me to mention a musical that hasn't been mentioned yet: West Side Story.

This is not the best song in the movie, but it's my favorite choreography. You can really feel the characters' emotions, their rage and their attempts to suppress it and play it cool -- it is communicated not just through the lyrics, but through the dancing. It's so awesome.

A lot of great choices so far--I'm a huge fan of musicals--but I went way off the beaten path with Spike Lee's Passing Strange:

"And James Baldwin said it's alright." I just got highly recommended this a few days ago and it's on Netflix Instant. Will be blind watching this soon enough.

Many really qualify, and I could post numerous ones. But I do have one film that I actually bought on Criterion because its a new favorite of mine: Le cercle rouge (1970), which is a great crime film. I also reviewed it for one of my smaller threads, too.

Thanks, yeah, sorry about that. I thought about it being a spoiler for a second and then just forgot to add the tags after I embedded the deal.
