I have reason to believe that a new poll would result in significant changes.
And so ...
Submit your five favorite films from this year and in a week I will give you a top ten. IMDb dates will be used.
The point system is as follows
1st Place-5 points
2nd Place-4 points
3rd Place-3.5 points
4th Place-3 points
5th Place-2.5 points
There will be no restrictions on short films. A minimum of three films must be listed. If you want to edit, make a new post and tell me what you've changed.
You may begin now.

Everyone Else
Director: Maren Ade
Country: Germany
While on a Mediterranean vacation, a seemingly happy boyfriend and girlfriend find their connection to one another tested as they bond with another couple.
Won Best Actress (Birgit Minichmayr) at the Berlin Internation Film Festival, as well as the Jury Grand Prix. In preparation for shooting, director Maren Ade had the cast watch Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage together.
"Ade's exploration of intimacy and its discontents recalls the European relationship epics of 35 years ago—Rivette's L'amour fou, Bergman's Scenes From a Marriage, Jean Eustache's The Mother and the Whore—but it's purposefully down-sized and set in a lower key. Ade has an acute sense of gesture. " - J. Hoberman

Where the Wild Things Are
Director: Spike Jonze
Country: USA
An adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic children's story, where Max, a disobedient little boy sent to bed without his supper, creates his own world--a forest inhabited by ferocious wild creatures that crown Max as their ruler.
Carter Burwell and Karen O were nominated for a Golden Globe Award (Best Original Score). The studio decided not to position the film as a kids movie and spent 70% of the media for it on broad based and adult driven buys.
"If your kids get all wide-eyed at the prospect of listening to grown-ups' self-absorbed reflections on the fears, anxieties and frustrations of childhood, or if they've ever clambered onto your lap and begged for a civics lesson on the dangers of totalitarianism, then by all means run, don't walk, to Fandango and get your tickets for Where the Wild Things Are." - Stephanie Zacharek

Director: Pete Docter and Bob Peterson
Country: USA
By tying thousands of balloon to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America.
Won Oscars for Best Animated Film and Best Original Score (Michael Giacchino). Very first animated film, as well as the first 3D film, ever to open the Cannes Film Festival.
"Up is a wonderful film, with characters who are as believable as any characters can be who spend much of their time floating above the rain forests of Venezuela ... Two of the three central characters are cranky old men, which is a wonder in this youth-obsessed era ... This is another masterwork from Pixar, which is leading the charge in modern animation." - Roger Ebert

Antichrist
Director: Lars von Trier
Country: Denmark
A grieving couple retreats to their cabin in the woods, hoping to repair their broken hearts and troubled marriage. But nature takes its course and things go from bad to worse.
Won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival (Charlotte Gainsbourg). This movie received a special anti-award from the ecumenical jury at Cannes. The jury, which typically awards a film that promotes spiritual and humanist values, decided to award this film an anti-award for its 'misogynistic views'.
"For 70 minutes, Antichrist is a rare exploration of pain, featuring two actors collaborating with each other in agonizing and intimate ways. It also contains some of the best work Gainsbourg has ever done on screen. And then - if I put it more gently I wouldn't really be saying it - director Lars von Trier loses his mind." -- Mick LaSalle

Enter the Void
Director: Gaspar Noé
Country: France
A drug-dealing teen is killed in Japan, after which he reappears to watch over his sister.
Shown in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Gaspar Noé was around 23 years old, when he saw Robert Montgomery's Lady in the Lake on drugs. The film is shot in subjective camera, entirely from the point of view of the main character. For Enter the Void, Noé uses a subjective camera in the same manner.
"It takes some adjustment, but Enter The Void is a trance-like experience, feeding the shimmering neon of Tokyo at night into a spectacular hallucinogenic head-trip." -- Scott Tobias

The White Ribbon
Director: Michael Haneke
Country: Germany
Strange events happen in a small village in the north of Germany during the years just before World War I, which seem to be ritual punishment. The abused and suppressed children of the villagers seem to be at the heart of this mystery.
Won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Nominated for Oscars in the categories of Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography. All scenes were originally shot in color and then altered to black and white in post-production.
"It's on the faces of the children that Haneke tells his story of corruption and the grip of fascism. This haunting film never pushes itself on you. It trusts you to suss out the horror that lies beneath the veneer of innocence." -- Peter Travers

Bright Star
Director: Jane Campion
Country: UK
A drama based on the three-year romance between 19th century poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne, which was cut short by Keats' untimely death at age 25.
Nominated for an Oscar in the category of Costume Design. Shown in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The Hyde House and Estate in Hyde, Bedfordshire substituted for the Keats House in Hampstead. Jane Campion decided that the Keats House was too small.
"What Campion does is seek visual beauty to match Keats' verbal beauty. There is a shot here of Fanny in a meadow of blue flowers that is so enthralling it beggars description." -- Roger Ebert

Dogtooth
Director: Giorgos Lanthimos
Country: Greece
A husband and wife keep their children imprisoned on their property into adulthood. Any word that comes from beyond their family abode is instantly assigned a new meaning. Finally, Christina disturbs the domestic balance.
Nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. Won the Un Certain Regard Award at Cannes. It was the first Greek film since Ifigeneia (1977) to be nominated for an Oscar and only the fifth ever.
"There's a method to Lanthimos's portrait of madness, as it serves as a surreal portrait of corrupting power, of the malleability of the young and the authoritarianism of their elders ... Discussing the film too heavily in those terms, however, wrongly places it in didactic Michael Haneke territory ... and saddles it with overt sociological implications best left to simmer, ambiguously, in the nooks and crannies of the disturbed action." -- Nick Schager

A Serious Man
Director: Joel and Ethan Coen
Country: USA
Larry Gopnik, a Midwestern professor watches his life unravel through multiple sudden incidents. Though seeking for meaning and answers he seems to stay stalled.
Nominated for Oscars in the category of Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Cinematography (Roger Deakins). The tornado bearing down on the town at the climax is a factual event. There was a tornado outbreak in Southern Minnesota, 1967.
"A Serious Man is wholly a Coen brothers movie, in that it’s full of exaggerated characters and comic cruelty, anchored to a way of looking at the world that seems to posit a fundamental absence of meaning. And yet there’s something sweet and even a little heartening about the movie, too." -- Noel Murray

Inglourious Basterds
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Country: USA
In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a group of Jewish-American soldiers are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis.
Won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz). Nominated for 7 other Oscars including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Director. When asked about the misspelled title, Tarantino gave the following answer: "Here's the thing. I'm never going to explain that. You do an artistic flourish like that, and to explain it would just take the piss out of it and invalidate the whole stroke in the first place."
"The dialogue is more than just witty; it also exudes feeling, dread, and risk. How and why people speak to each other, or how and why they chose not to, becomes a panic far more chilling than any violence in the film." -- Ed Gonzalez

Yes, the main reason for the revision was that Dogtooth has become a highly popular Match Cut film since our last poll. The strong showing for Enter the Void was kind of suprising, but welcome to me, at least.

Likely a better group of films overall, so I can't complain. I should get around to Moon sometime this summer...

Yeah, I guess I waited too long with this. I still wanted to finally sit down and watch Bright Star, Everyone Else and Enter The Void before redo-ing my list, but oh well. Considering four out of my Top 5 made this final ten (Moon being the only holdout), I'm still pretty happy with how it looks.

I didn't vote, but if I had, Bad Lieutenant would have kicked out (perhaps) Everyone Else from the Top 10, and Where the Wild Things Are would have tied with Up at 20.5 (a pairing which I'd find morally offensive). Limits of Control was my #1, which received a total of ZERO nominations, therefore leaving me indifferent to procedures.

I have pretty mixed feelings about Inglourious Basterds, but I can't say that I've forgotten it. I voted for A Serious Man and The White Ribbon, and Dogtooth was in my top ten. Antichrist didn't quite make my top ten, but it would defintely be in the top twenty. Bright Star is probably Jane Campion's best movie since The Piano, though it's still a long way from Sweetie. Only the middle section of Enter the Void really works; the last hour is horribly repeatitive and meandering, and the characters are all stupid and predictable. Up was cute but forgettable, like every Pixar movie I've seen, and I haven't seen Where the Wild Things Are. I suppose I'll have to take another look at Everyone Else one of these days, but the Bergmanesque hyper-concentration of the narrative seemed to me more of a limitation than a strength.

Good list. I hope to get to the rest of it fairly soon. The only one I haven't heard of is Alamar. Its tougher for me to view foreign movies-one of these days I'll give in and torrent movies.
