This set of categories looks good to me, though I'm reluctant to have the writing and directing categories be episode-specific, but I get that that's how the Emmys do it. Also, I'd push for five nominees rather than three, though people can submit fewer if they can't get to five.

I would vote to combine the Supporting Actor/Actress, Writing, Directing, and Guest Star categories.

Doubt I'll even fill five nominees for most of those, but I hope this will give me some ideas of what to check out.

Is there enough great comedy shows over the last year to justify all those extra comedy categories? Only ones I think I've seen are Louie and Community.

I watched an episode of that last night actually. I didn't think much of it. Are you joking when you say its great?

Well, I'd hesitate calling it great. The show is silly, for sure, and certainly not for everyone, but the cast has such great chemistry that my wife and I really enjoy it.

I'd say Modern Family is pretty great though, as far as new comedies go.

Actually I have seen the latest seasons of these come to think of it. They are great. Never mind.

Don't like Modern Family.

narrowing some of those down to three was really difficult, especially best ensemble drama.

i think at least best comedy and best drama should have five nominees.

edit: and really i can't think of the downside of going five nominees across the board. worst case scenario we end up with some weak categories.

Fair enough. Let's say up to five, but I'd like a minimum of three (so we don't get ballots with just one entry.)

So far, I'm having the hardest time narrowing down Best Supporting Actress in a Drama. I guess that's where the juiciest parts are.

But Margo Martindale should win. Just saying.

Mara

This was hard. I need to catch up on Friday Night Lights, and it looks like Game of Thrones and The Killing might make some inroads, depending on how things go.

And CRAP ON A CRACKER, I forgot that the season of Doctor Who that is eligible is this next season, not the past one. Some of them will probably apply, but I need to see how it goes.

He was AMAZING. He'd be my pick to win... maybe... after Goggins.

also i watched downton abbey so quickly that it's hard for me to single out an episode for writing or directing honors.

It's consistent, too, so it's hard to single out one episode as being particularly good. But Episode Three was when I said to myself, "Yeah, I've never seen anything like this before."

Also, holy cow my acting list is white. I can't think of any really strong minority actors or actresses on shows I like right now. Remember the good old days of Lost?

I had to give up on The Office and 30 Rock. I think the shows have really deteriorated. I will admit that, at one point, they were doing great things with women and comedy.

That said, I still haven't seen Parks and Recreation. I hear it's good.

Joanne Kelly's acting on Warehouse 13 never struck me particularly one way or the other, but I just saw her on Slings and Arrows and she was great. So I can hope for some more meat to her part.

Also, sheesh she's pretty.

The thing is, when it comes to people like Margo Martindale (and even Jeremy Davies, for that matter) on Justified, she's technically listed as a guest star despite being a strong supporting position in nearly every episode this season, leaving me unsure as to where to put her. And did we drop the idea for "Documentary / Reality" category? If so, An Idiot Abroad is definitely locking a spot in comedy for me.

I also agree that we need to have five nomination slots instead of just three.

Yeah. I'm not sure what the technical definition is, but I'd consider a guest spot as being around three episodes or fewer.

I've noticed there's some disagreement on voting Elisabeth Moss as either best actress or best supporting actress.

Henry Gale

Alright, I'm definitely okay with nominating her like that.

In terms of other ideas I don't remember being discussed, did we ever entertain the idea of a "Best Late Night / Talk Show" category? I'd say even in just the last year that field has gotten stronger.

I can't really see how Moss would be categorized as a lead. Some episodes she's not even in.

Quick search shows her to be in 50/52 episodes. And she's really the only person, other than Don, that has entire episodes dedicated to their specific storyline.

But I agree she's sort of middle ground.

Isn't Esposito in the credits of Breaking Bad as a star now?

Ah, I guess he is. I watched seasons 2 and 3 pretty close together, so I guess I just picture him slowly just making more and more appearances as things progressed. Looking things up, the internets seem to imply that Jonathan Banks is a regular too, which is even more confusing since I know he wasn't featured too prominently in every episode last season.

Either way, the supporting categories were already some of my hardest to narrow down.

I also want to use this opportunity to take advantage of the weak representation of women in comedy and push Kristen Wiig for Best Actress for SNL.

She'd have to be Supporting though, wouldn't she? I mean that's what she's been nominated for when it comes to things like the Emmys, and even looking at something like this most recent (and surprisingly stellar) season finale, she was only in about two skits.

Either way, I'm not sure I have room for her. For me the supporting categories, especially in comedy, were the hardest to whittle down to just five.

Lucky

Yes, you're correct. I've adjusted my ballot accordingly. I guess I figured that since she was one of the headliners on the show they would push her lead.

Personally, I'm going strictly by numbers. If someone gets enough ballots in either category, they'll get an official nomination.

It was a joke. I was wondering if anyone would catch that. I was mainly making fun of the catering uniforms, and the fact that I don't really have anything other than the costume dramas I watch worthy of a nomination in that category.

I really struggled with lead/supporting when it came to Downton Abbey, so I just went with my gut. If someone wants to make a case that I'm wrong in any of my choices, I'd hear them out and adjust my ballot accordingly if convinced.

That's not to mention that she's a major impetus for Scott's maturation process.

At first I thought this said "masturbation" and I was confused. Then I realized it was "maturation" and was still confused. Then I read the Scott Pilgrim thread... and I gotta tell you... still confused.
