If you hear a quality soundtrack whether it be on a videogame, movie, TV show or what have you, add it to the compendium.

are you differentiating between soundtracks and scores? or can they both just go in here?

Add the soundtrack from Herzog's My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done to a list of my recent favorites: a mix of Ernst Reijseger's creepy original score and the several beautiful non-English language vocal selections that are featured throughout.

It's a very strange film, even by Herzog's standards. It's a perfect companion piece to his other cop/crime thriller, Bad Lieutenant, even though they're complete polar opposites.

Here's a good example (complete with a nod to both Lynch and to a musical number from Hable con ella):

Totally. Daft Punk Morris Coded their music in for Tron - they didn't even bother to phone it in. Hanna's score is awesome.

I still don't quite understand the love for Daft Punk. I like the Tron Legacy soundtrack but the other three albums of theirs I own do nothing for me. The only reason I bought them is because everyone keeps telling me they're "the" electronic group and I like electronic music. Out of all the electronic music I've listened to their sound is the most boring and repetitive.

No one can be told why Daft Punk is awesome. If you don't hear it, you don't.
And they hardly "phoned it in" for Tron: Legacy - I've read in interviews that the sound guys were so impressed with the level of involvement from Daft Punk; they literally spent countless hours integrating and adjusting every single track so that it fits every scene perfectly. Creatively, they could have "went wild" like most expected them to, but I truly respect their restrained approach and the mix of pure electric and classic sound.

Their first album is great. After that, not so much. Although I love the animated film for Discovery, but that has more to do with Leiji Matsumoto.

Their score for Tron is dreadfully boring, dull, and entirely uninspired.

I don't care how long they spent mixing and mastering; the final product is below mediocre.

The best in modern-sounding scores is still tomandandy. Their work on The Mothman Prophecies, Mean Creak, The Hills Have Eyes, and The Strangers is masterful.

And the score for Valhalla Rising is also amazing.

I still listen to it very often. I seem to like being bored by mediocre albums.

No, it's true. The Chemical Brothers are great. Lost their way a little bit in the 2000s with a couple of crap albums, but Further and the Hanna soundtrack is evidence perhaps that once what was lost has now been found.

I have no idea why it took me so long to get Klaus Badelt's "Time Machine" (2002). The film, of course, kind of sucked, but the OST is fantastic.

My favorite soundtrack (more of a song compilation than original material composed for the film) from the last couple of years is Tetsuya Nakashima's Confessions (Nakashima started out as a music video director, hence the film's polished video/audio sheen).

Fortunately, someone has posted the whole thing on YouTube. Is there nothing the interwebs can't do? :pritch:

I pretty much agree with this review(from YesAsia):

Confessions has been sweeping various Japanese film awards over the past few months, winning awards for writer-director Nakashima Tetsuya, stars Matsu Takako and Okada Masaki, and editor Koike Yoshiyuki. While they all deserve the accolades they've been getting, there's one important element of the film that's been largely ignored: the music.

The reason for that is actually quite simple; most of the Confessions soundtrack is not an instrumental score. Instead, it is compiled from material not composed specifically for the film. Despite the fact that rock band Boris and composer Gabriele Roberto produced new material for the Confessions soundtrack, most film awards tend to only recognize original instrumental film scores. Even though such a rule makes sense for certain films (for example, Quentin Tarantino films' use of existing music), music plays such a major presence in Confessions that neglecting Nakashima (who is also the film's Music Supervisor) and music producer Kanahashi Toyohiko's work would be a huge disservice.

Boasting a mix of experimental rock, classical pieces, melancholic mood pieces, and well-known pop songs, the Confessions soundtrack interestingly enough starts off with the creepy Milk, a children's song-style ballad about love for the calcium-filled white liquid. The original song, which also starts off the film, recalls the style of Nakashima's Memories of Matsuko, the story of a sad life told with bright, exploding colors. However, the tone of Confessions is actually more accurately reflected by its official theme song Last Flowers (Track 2), a melancholic ballad by Radiohead. A strong presence throughout the film, the song is guaranteed to stick with the film's viewers thanks to its ominous piano-driven sound and haunting melody.

The film's rougher edges are expressed by Boris's experimental rock sound, whose mid-tempo, ominous guitar sound in songs like Niji ga Hajimaru Toki (Track 3) and Ketsunetsu (Track 18) works perfectly in the film. Meanwhile, new renditions of classical pieces by electronica musician Shibuya Keiichiro serve as eerily peaceful interludes during the disturbing film.

Instead of opting for recognizable pop culture classics, Nakashima uses lesser known music (even Last Flowers only exists on a special edition of Radiohead's In Rainbows) to strike the right tone for the film. Even the presence of pop songs like AKB48's River (Track 7) and That's the Way I Like It (Track 15) exist only in the background, or are used in an ironic context. As a music video director, Nakashima knows the right music for the right atmosphere, and the music he chose for Confessions all serve the important role of creating his film's gray, hyper-realistic world, as well as setting the right storytelling pace for Koike in the editing lab. Some may criticize Nakashima for having made the ultimate music video film with Confessions, but that's no reason to neglect the fact that he has compiled one of the most memorable and most fitting film soundtracks of 2010.

The soundtrack is an eclectic mix of ambient/experimental/pop hybrids, presented in the most alluring of ways. Here's a sample:

Daniel, wasn't the singer of that last tune the same one featured on the Mind Game soundtrack?

Anyway, check out the trailer again. It's a great one from one of the best films of 2010:

Neil Young's work on the Dead Man soundtrack was pretty awesome.

And as far as electronic soundtracks, all must bow to Forbidden Planet.

I argued with ETM years ago that Wrath of Khan was a better score than TMP, but after a re-listen to all of the TMP by accident, I think I'll admit ETM was right.

I never said Khan was bad, either. It's just that Horner goes for cheap thrills, with a catchy main theme which he repeats in various versions throughout the album. It's repetitive. Goldsmith, on the other hand, created an intricate and complex work that works like a story on its own, from start to finish. I respect that in his work. Also, it was the genesis of the theme that later became the TNG trademark and one of my favorite tunes ever.
