View Full Version : For Your Consideration - The Cutties Primetime TV Awards

Some time in May or June we're going to have a television awards ceremony for MC (similar to the Matchies.) I want to be clear on what shows are and are not eligible for consideration, and also to solicit further inclusions. The categories haven't been set in stone yet, but consider basic things like acting, writing, directing, etc.

I want to include shows from Summer 2010, Fall 2010 and Winter/Spring 2011. Basically, any show where the season premiered between June 2010 and May 2011. Here is a quick list cobbled from the internet of which seasons would be eligible.

I am asking for help in adding additional shows that should be considered. Please don't just mention any show that fits the criteria-- there are dozens-- but shows that you would want to cast a vote for in some category.

Also, this is your three month warning to get caught up on shows.

I also need your advice on one show. I chose a one-year cycle to keep multiple seasons of one show from competing against itself and to give them all a fair shake. However, Breaking Bad is killing me by taking too long of a hiatus. It ran from March-June in 2010, which puts it before our cut-off date and places it as a "spring" show, but it's not returning until summer of 2011.

Disregarding it completely seems silly. It is okay to put season 3 up for consideration, even though it's early? Because season 4 wouldn't be eligible until next year.

EDIT: It's going up.

Ooh. I have watched some.

I've seen all or most of:
Louie
Mad Men
Rescue Me (boo)
Eastbound and Down
Breaking Bad (if it counts)
The Walking Dead (great first episode, meh rest of the way)
True Blood (blegh)

I hope to get to:
Boardwalk Empire
It's Always Sunny...
Game of Thrones
The Office (if it truly has improved like y'all say)

And...
South Park (they all kind of run together to me)

Any other recs?

The eligible season of South Park is the one that still upcoming in April.

Doctor Who's eligible season hasn't started yet, either.

I'm kind of hoping some people take the time to watch Rubicon.

No, not really.

But I honestly think it's worth taking the journey even if you don't quite arrive at the destination. The atmosphere, writing, and acting are excellent.

I promise you that Arliss Howard deserves to be nominated (best supporting) for his character of Kale Ingram.

Unfortunately, there's absolutely no time when all the series are completed at once. I figure if we have the ceremony in late May or early June, we'll have 6-8 weeks to consider late bloomers like Treme and Game of Thrones and Doctor Who.

Well, I'd be a big enough nerd to make the effort to see a random episode of shows nominated (this could especially work for actor noms)...I'd still be hugely biased, but that could be fun...I probably have too much time on my hands.

Loving it. I'm about 3/4 through, and I've never come across such a gut-wrenching, horrifying story that is so beautifully written. I want to keep going as much as I want to put it down. I'm pacing myself because I'm reading it for a class, otherwise I'd have finished it a long time ago.

Okay, I went through my list of shows and compared them to the ones you have. This is the ones you should add because I think at least one person would vote for each of them.

An Idiot Abroad S1
Being Human S3
Bob's Burgers S1
Bored To Death S2
Episodes S1
Harry's Law S1
Hung S2
Identity S1
Melissa and Joey S1
No Ordinary Family S1
Perfect Couples S1
Portlandia S1
Running Wilde S1
Shameless (US) S1
Sherlock S1
Smallville S10
Spartacus: Gods of the Arena
Star Wars: The Clone Wars S3
The Big Bang Theory S4
The League S2
Venture Brothers S4

Spartacus I'm not sure if that should be under this category or under Miniseries since it was a 6 episode prequel to the first season.

These two I'm going to put out there in case people want to vote for them. I don't particularly, but if someone says they should be in there.

Hawaii Five-O S1
Chase S1

Then I think I'm the only person on earth that knows this show exists so I can't put it in unless at least one other person likes the show.

Insecurity S1

An Idiot Abroad S1
Bored To Death S2
Episodes S1
Sherlock S1
The League S2

Absolutely agree, but it doesn't qualify for the Cutties this year.

I think we can just make it a general "cancelled too soon" category. But use sense in nominating-- if it's been on for five years, or had time to wrap up all the plot threads, then it's not too soon.

I like calling it "The Firefly Award" because it's a show that blinks out, like a firefly. It has nothing to do with me being biased in favor of that show. None at all.

I would nominate Rubicon and Lone Star.

Downton Abbey, Justified, and Sherlock are must-sees, and all pretty short and easy to catch up on. If you don't want to commit to all of Doctor Who (although, worth it!) season 5 is a good place to pick it up, since we're dealing with a new doctor, and so a bit of a fresh start.

I watched a couple episodes of Terriers. It was fairly interesting, but I had trouble feeling invested.

Are we going to toss Mini Series/Made-For-TV Movie actors in the categories with the full series actors or are there going to be "Best Actor in a Mini Series or Made-For-TV Movie" categories? I don't know that we need them and don't have a problem mixing the two, just asking.

Also: FYC: Best Mini Series/Made-For-TV Movie - The Sunset Limited
Best Actor, Drama - Samuel L. Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones, The Sunset Limited

has there been any discussion of what categories and stuff we're going to have?

I was looking at the Emmy award categories and thought that those might be the best. I was thinking though we should probably have best actor, actress noms for both comedy and drama. It would have more roles but comedy and drama in tv are just two different beasts.

Yeah, I'm all for separate comedy and drama categories. I'm just wondering, and kind of doubting, we need a separate mini series acting category. I know I haven't seen enough to fill up such categories, but the ones I have seen deserve some recognition.

that's the trouble is there might end up only being 3 nominees of miniseries. I don't think I've watched a single one this year yet. I was going to put death comes to town on there but then realized it wasn't done during the dates said. I'm just not up to date on miniseries.

Agreed. In fact, I'm toying with the idea of having fantasy/sci-fi as a different category, if it looks like there are enough strong contenders.

I was waiting to see what people really seemed to be watching before coming up with a category list. It seems weird to fold miniseries and made-for-tv film actors in with regular shows, but since we only have two nominations, I think we have to.

So, probably, best comedy & drama, best actor & actress for each, best supporting actor & actress for each, best writing for each (episode specific), best directing for each (episode specific), guest role for each. I'd want the cancelled-too-soon category and a best ensemble category.

Nobody is pushing hard for reality shows, so I'm comfortable leaving those out.

What do you guys think? Should we have more whimsical inclusions to keep it fun? Should we split off fantasy & sci-fi?

We could do best costumes, or we could just hand the prize over to Downton Abbey right now.

I do currently watch about five reality shows. But they aren't as narrow in terms of seasons as they are for their whole production. One season of american idol is going to be the same as the next. If you like the presentation you'll keep watching. It's hard for me to vote on which one was the best this season vs. past seasons or other seasons of other shows. Writing doesn't change.

the only 'reality' show i watch is no reservations.

how about an award for best opening titles?

Hmm. We did that big contest not too long ago. But if people are interested, sure.

Mad Men might provide some competition. As might Game of Thrones. Maybe just a 3 nom category to make it a little more justified?

True. And opening credits would give us a chance to include YouTube clips. Sold!

I vote no for sci-fi/fantasy. Too many.

Could "Best Episode" work though? Or would that technically be "Best Directing?" Because the pilot for Walking Dead is brilliant, but no way am I nominating it as Best Drama series.

Best Opening Credits should technically only be for new series from this year...

I'd vote for having a "Best Episode" category over "Best Writing" and "Best Directing" just because keeping track of that many individual episodes is a challenge, for me at least.

Also, don't forget Boardwalk Empire for "Best Costume".

"Best Title Sequence" is cool and kinda quirky. "Best Animated Series" anyone? Not that I watch any....

We could do it as a category, or we could fold them into comedy (or drama, I guess) and just have them compete on the larger platform.

Maybe do a temp ballot?

Are we planning on separating the acting categories for Drama/Comedy still? I think we should definitely split Best Series that way, but I would personally lean to keeping the acting awards combined. I'm trying to come up with a mock ballot in my head and finding 10 nominees per actor/actress/supp actor/supp actress is very difficult. Does anyone on here watch THAT much TV? It would probably make the actual races more interesting as well.

...just my two cents though. Maybe we could at least follow the GG and split Actor/Actress by Drama/Comedy and combine the supporting roles.

I watch THAT much TV. /shame

I would really vote to have all the acting categories separate. I'm having a hard time cutting down my noms as it is.

I'd be up for starting a temp ballot thread too, Ezee.

How did Friends work? Were the six actors all considered lead? I would compare it to that.

I think Jerry was the lead and the rest were supporters. Not sure. I'll have to verify.

So I looked it up, and after 2003, they were all leads, before then, they were all nominated in supporting categories.

I know many are not big fans (rightfully so) of True Blood, but those opening credits deserve to dominate that category.

I'm glad the ballots aren't happening now cause I'm in finals and dying. But once finals are over I'm gonna start doing this.
