IT'S THE 2011 MATCH CUT AWARDS!
It's the 2010 Matchies.
Lots of Match Cutters are dressed up really nice to be here tonight.
Look, ETM with his very own knitted scarf. Hey ETM, how's it going??
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y216/sf_anime/DoctorWho.jpg
Oh… Okay! Not a fan of the music you say ETM? Well, you can only blame that on Match Cut's very own, Carl Sagan's Ghost… D_Davis.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs719.snc4/63991_1248257583803_1750358232 _444226_2417916_n.jpg
How goes it D_Davis. I heard a friend of yours said you'd get several nominations in your lifetime. What? You don't remember? Well, it was back in '92. Here's what your friend said to us…
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1180.snc4/150226_1690967802491_148664495 4_1802119_2675847_n.jpg
That's right. You've got a ways to go bro! Sorry, hopefully ETM isn't one of the voters.
Who else is in the house?
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/2775/meandkylecigars.jpg
Meg and his bro. Nice of you to dress up for this Meg!

And they say Barty's one of the "nuttier" Match Cut posters. Whatevs!
Lots of dogs in the house. No literally, we got Benny Profane and his dog.
http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs078.snc3/14565_1239559701467_1003527427 _30767598_4269438_n.jpg

And the coolest dog in the house, belonging to Skitch!

Alright, alright… Wait, I heard MadMan say something… What's that? I can't hear you…
Say that one more time MadMan…
I still can't hear you MadMan.
Sorry, Dukefrukem's speaking louder, he seems to have something more interesting to say:

To present the first award of the evening ....
The star of the Matchie-nominated film, Sweet Grass!

"Thank you. The following films have taken us all over the world to expose injustice, make bold political statements, reflect upon the human condition and expose the cruel realities of life on this, our planet Earth. They teach us what it means to feel joy, what it means to feel love, what it means to be alive, what it means to be an individual bursting with personal desires that yearn to be expressed as you walk endless miles, staring at the woolly butts of your best friends -- or maybe they are strangers -- while minimally educated rednecks shout at you to keep moving, for god's sake, KEEP MOVING! Ladies and gentlemen, your nominees ...."

Nice job, MC! The Illusionist and Dogtooth are the last of the Oscar nominees that still interest me, and the pedigree behind this one is so intriguing.
Someone might want to edit E's announcement that the catagory is best Documentary... :)

Wow, I never realized our top choices over the years were so... well, lame. I must have erased some of them from my memory (A History of Violence? The Dark Knight?).
Anyways, that's not the point, and I do love these, so go ahead and ignore me. (Seriously, though, I did a spit take when I scrolled through E's opening post. But anyways, no, ignore me.)

Actually I think Children of Men is the worst film on that list, though I know I'm way in the minority there. Then again, I've never bothered to even finish Inglorious Basterds.
I'll shut up now.

Wow, I never realized our top choices over the years were so... well, lame.
The best, for me, are the Cuaron and Tarantino wins, though these too have flaws as well. But all the same, the nomination process to the Matchies (when we post our individual lists) always offers the best part of the MC community, where really diverse opinions are disseminated and sought by others.

With you on both counts, which you'll probably find regrettable.
CoM and IB aren't anything to be proud of either.
Edit: Glad to see TS3 didn't win, and I agree with Sync that Inception will probably be the big winner.

A History of Violence is the only one I have a big problem with. Probably could have done better than Dark Knight, but it was all the rage at the time, so what are you gonna do?
In other news, holy crap, this is the 6th one of these we've done?

PRESENTING BEST SONG....
http://pixarplanet.com/blog/images/855.jpg
2-time Oscar Winner RANDY NEWMAN!
I find Randy Newman's "voice" (that is, his...way of singing) is so, so, SO annoying.
I hate his obnoxious voice. He is one of the worst.
SO FUCKING BAD. WHAT THE FUCK. F YOU RANDY NEWMAN.

A late bloomer for the Match Cut awards circuit, Blue Valentine did what it could do with the limited amount of viewers that did see it. Still at 100% on the consensus, and on a number of top tens, the word of mouth made it into a strong contender.
Nominated for two other awards this year (Best Actor, Best Actress), here is your first nomination for Best Picture....
Blue Valentine.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JUoH2-gp31Q/SR2q4B6YzRI/AAAAAAAAIpg/qAKFRbBm5Nc/s400/the_sheep_have_had_enough.jpg
Sweet Grass
Sweetgrass is a 2009 documentary film that follows modern-day cowboys as they lead their flocks of sheep up into Montana's Absaroka-Beartooth mountains for summer pasture. It was directed by Lucien Castaing-Taylor, a Harvard anthropologist, and produced by his wife Ilisa Barbash. The title derives from Sweet Grass County, one of several in which the film was shot.

The second Best Picture nomination wasn't really even heard of back in November.
Since then, it's become one of the more talked about movies on Match Cut. Its dry yet disturbing humor is a discussion point, and Giorgos Lanthimos has become a must-watch director, drawing comparisons to both Michael Haneke and Lars Von Trier. Lanthimos is nominated for Best Director and Original Screenplay. Dogtooth is also nominated for Best Ensemble.
Also with a 100% consensus rating... This is... DOGTOOTH!

Ideally, I'd love to do one of those snazzy, edited to "Sex Bob-Omb" montage of shots, but I just don't have the software capable of doing that. And I'd rather use shots that aren't just from the trailers, which it seems many of those are.

By the way, not really feeling the win for "Sex Bob-Omb". It's barely even a song. More like a garage rock jam. "The Clap" is much more deserving. I'm sad my campaign didn't take off.
But then, Match Cut has never really been into this category anyway.

Yeah, the song on its own kinda sucks. But I remember really digging it as the movie was playing and the credits started. The other songs all suck as well.

Ok, so I just found out I'm presenting the award for Best Costume Design and I'm in a rush to find a presenter.
Monolith volunteered, so let's check in with him:
http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j242/monolith96/morninghairsmallversion.jpg
Hmmm, we really need to do this tonight. E wants this finished up tomorrow and really, no one gives a shit about Costume Design anyway.
What? Oh, it's Lasse checking in from Denmark to voice his disagreement:
http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v193/137/76/796330181/n796330181_2668842_7092.jpg
Ooook, point taken I suppose, but really, we have to get moving. Is anyone serious about presenting this award?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v156/Buffaluffasaurus/n634615935_492697_451.jpg
I'll take that as a no. Ok, next volunteer has it; these shenanigans have gone on long enough. I haven't even mentioned any of the nominees yet! Can someone at least do that?
Oh good, Winston* has called in from New Zealand, but either the connection is bad or there's some type of battle going on in the background. Wait...he's passed his phone to a friend who is sending us some pictures of Winston*.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a332/colpot/071.jpg
Oh my, it looks like Winston* is well-dressed, but...wait, another pic is coming through...
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a332/colpot/124.jpg
OH MY!! I'm not sure that's the image I'm looking for in a MatchCut presenter for Best Costume Design. Uh, hold on, ok, Winston*'s friend would like to offer a defense for Winston*'s costume:
0V2mE_QCpzU
Well, Winston*'s friend, that cannot be argued, but I'm afraid we'll have to look elsewhere as MatchCut, a family friendly discussion board, cannot condone bare ass cheeks in this, our most illustrious awards event of the year.
Onward and upwards, MCer's, we're getting there.
Come on, can't anyone show a little enthusiasm for this category!!!???
http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v167/52/97/13004085/n13004085_31425054_1281.jpg
Heh, nice try Nick. I'm looking for some actual enthusiasm.

And as much as I like most of, if not all of, the songs from Scott Pilgrim I agree with Spinal that The Clap is better. Get Him to the Greek wasn't as funny or as good as Scott Pilgrim, but it had cooler songs. I guess I completely forgot about these awards, as usual, or I didn't vote as usual because I never seen all of the nominees and I don't want to be one of those Oscar voters, either.
Hey I've viewed all of the previous winners, and all of the previous winners are films that appear in my Top 10s for all of those respective years. AHOV is my #2 of 2005, The Dark Knight is my #2 for 2008, Children of Men is my #1 for 2006, No Country for Old Men is my #2 for 2007, and Basterds is my #5 or 6, I think, maybe 7th, for 2009. And yet I've never voted for these awards, so no one can hold me responsible :P
This is also the first year I'm bothering to read through the thread for some reason.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY:
BLACK SWAN
http://www.theasc.com/ac_magazine/December2010/BlackSwan/images/ac1210_BS_06.jpg
Toplight aimed through overhead diffusion illuminates the dancers’ rehearsal space. All of the movie’s ballet scenes were filmed at State University of New York Purchase College. “It had everything we needed, including dressing rooms, cinderblock corridors and the large rehearsal space,” says cinematographer Matthew Libatique, ASC. He adds that the rehearsal space was the setting for Joe Gideon’s death scenes in All That Jazz. “That movie was a big influence on Requiem for a Dream, so the place had good mojo. The only problem was that we were living in Manhattan and driving 45 minutes to Westchester County every day.”
ENTER THE VOID
http://robsmovievault.files.wordpress .com/2010/12/enter-the-void_592x299.jpg
The director explains that he dislikes using professional lighting instruments. "I have a phobia of movie lights," says No. "I don't like having equipment on the set that would prevent me from turning the camera around. Benot and I had an agreement on Irreversible and on this film that there would be no movie lights on the set." He concedes, however, that exceptions were made on Void in order to create the strobe lighting in the nightclub, and to allow for some impressionistic washes of changing colors.
GREENBERG
http://www.movingimagesource.us/images/articles/greenberg-3-20100322-123212-medium.jpg
Savides is responsible for the film's distinctive offhanded, smoggy look, which is "naturalistic" not in the fashion of contemporary DV photography, but an the older fashion, like you can tell from the grain that you're watching real things shot on real film. (Contemporary technology shapes our ideal of a "neutral" aesthetic.) I'm not sure, but it looks like Savides used a lot of telephoto lenses, for those flattened man-walking-down-the-sidewalk-surrounded-by-seas-of-smeary-people shots, the ones 70s directors of urban-set features used to shoot from a distance, back when movie stars and regular people were permitted to mingle. (In Bordwell and Thompson's Film Art: An Introduction, they use stills from Tootsie.)
INCEPTION
http://www.theasc.com/ac_magazine/July2010/Inception/images/ac0710_INC_17.jpg
A spinning hallway set, capable of rotating 360 degrees, was employed to capture a zero-gravity action sequence. This set required a camera platform that could dolly along the floor as the set moved; the track was hidden in the pattern of the floor’s carpet. The other camera is mounted on a Technocrane, which allowed it to move independently of the set.
SHUTTER ISLAND
http://www.theasc.com/ac_magazine/March2010/ShutterIsland/images/ac0310_SI_21.jpg
As complicated as it was, developing the strategy for rendering Teddy’s shifting mental state was not the filmmakers’ most daunting task. “Each film has its own set of complexities, and the biggest challenge on Shutter Island was maintaining the look of a severe storm over the period in which the film was shot,” says Richardson. A hurricane gathers force as Teddy’s investigation proceeds, and portions of the agents’ search for the missing patient takes place outside the compound. Principal photography commenced in Massachusetts in the winter of 2008 and wrapped in July, with the work spread over 85 days, and although the story called for fog, clouds and driving rains, the shoot was “plagued by sunlight,” says Richardson. Careful scheduling and extensive tenting were required throughout the shoot. “The tenting became an enormous task for the grips,” says gaffer Ian Kincaid. “I can’t imagine the yardage of materials [key grip] Chris Centrella and his capable band of grips put up in the air. Eventually, entire setups became compounded with greenscreens, so there were huge bounce lights, huge bounce muslins, huge black overheads and huge greenscreens. It was insanity.” Richardson notes, “I’ve never been involved with a shoot that utilized so many overhead blacks. Chris Centrella is a master, the finest in this business. He was able to provide vast areas of shade under extremely complex conditions that fluctuated from harsh sun to deep clouds and fierce rains. Without him, this film wouldn’t have the look it does.”
TRUE GRIT
http://www.vanityfair.com/online/oscars/2011/02/18/true-grit-01.jpg
I asked him how a cinematographer approaches a Western, when the American West is arguably the most photographed subject in Hollywood history. "Oh, I was definitely aware of that, having shot 'Jesse James.' At first, I thought of this as my second Western, but then when you read the book and what the Coens did with it, it's such a different animal. I don't approach films purely in context of genre. I was pleased to be able to shoot a Western, but I don't just think of it as just a Western. It's about the particular story and these characters and how to convey that."
I told him that the most immediate difference for me is how "Jesse James" feels like you're looking at something long dead, a memory pressed between pages in a book. "I'm really pleased you'd say that. That's exactly what Andrew was trying to do. It's a very melancholy piece. 'True Grit' is much more direct. The visual language is totally direct."

But still, why? I'm pretty ignorant about things, such as deciding Best Editing, but when I think back on Scott Pilgrim, it's all fancy effects and high-speed, flashy editing that is geared toward making moments either as, a) wham-bang, or b) hilarious, as possible. Scott Pilgrim succeeded at comedic timing, I haven't seen Exit Through the Gift Shop, Shutter Island and Inception were both drowning in continuity errors that yesyes I know were intentional but PFFFFTTTT to both of them, and I dunno, Social Network isn't as cracked up as it's made out to be (it's of course still the best picture of the year).

Exit's definitely a feat of editing, and my second favorite, but I guess what I found impressive about Scott Pilgrim (and Wright's other films) is how incredibly well integrated and subordinated all of the various formal components (cinematography, visual and sound effects, music) are to its chosen world and genre. Wright's one of few comedy filmmakers whose editing and cinematography choices actually contribute to the comedy, as opposed to just being transparent joke-delivery systems.
I'm surprised it won, though. Looking forward to more of E's videos.

I actually had to check my vote, which did go to Exit Through the Gift Shop, but I am in full support of a Scott Pilgrim win for editing for the reason you state here, as well as the cleverly cut action sequences. Actually, I think all those nominees have top-notched editing, except for Inception.

That video has convinced me even more that I should see Black Swan
And while I didn't see all of the nominees for Best Editing, I agree with Eleven that Scott Pilgrim does a fantastic job of putting together so many different elements. One example of how awesome Pilgrim is that comes to mind is the scene with Patal, which is a Bollywood number that the movie pulls off really well. Or the amazing battle between Sex Bob and the twins. That said, my choice (for now) would have been The Social Network, though.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY:
THE GHOST WRITER
Strange how when I start criticizing some governments that they start pulling out stuff that happened many years ago. I mean, why doesn't Jack Nicholson get any grief for this? Give me my Matchie!

THE SOCIAL NETWORK
Good writers borrow from other writers. Great writers steal from them outright. And then there's me.
TOY STORY 3
All I did was throw a dart at what to mix Toy Story with. First I got Straw Dogs, and I was like, cool, but then John said, 'Probably not a good idea Lee.' So I threw the dart again and got Cool Hand Luke, and I was like, cool, and realized what I had done. John said, 'Cool."

Saw pretty major flaws in the storytelling of the four films I saw. Inception is the fourth nominated movie for Best Picture, and also Sycophant's prediction for the winner. Not a bad prediction as it was the most viewed film for the Match Cut community, has twelve total nominations, and has brought plenty of discussions about the actual logic of the dreamworld. Ah nice, I got my Top 10 mention as the big "CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS LIST IS FINALLY OVER" ending.
I realize that I've been okay with a lot of the winners so far, even if they may not have been what I chose, which may not have been the most radical choices to begin with (especially since in some cases I'm not positive as to what I picked...). Good work overall, though!
Also, completely unnecessary observation, that version of Daft Punk's "End Of Line" that got posted under the Score nominees is really cool, but definitely isn't how it is in the final film and soundtrack. Reading up on it, apparently it's a demo version they played in Flynn's Arcade at Comic-Con '09. Sadly, I can't find it anywhere as an mp3.
EDIT: Yay! Supporting Actor goes to another one of my choices. Though again, another really strong field for this year. I was even happy with the Oscar's five choices in the category! *shock*

I thought Inception's screenplay was it's major failing. It seemed very poorly structured, with every scene built around exposition for the first half of the movie. It also suffered from Nolan's penchant for overt schematicism and on-the-nosery. And only one character had any development, and the dialogue was flat. It's cool that the last third (half?) is one massive action scene that actually manages to be consistently gripping, layered and varied, and occasionally awing, but the success of that is in its execution, not the screenplay.

The screenplay for Inception is an extraordinary balancing act that takes an exhilarating, complex concept and communicates it in a way that is clear and potent. It successfully introduces us to a variety of worlds as it unfolds and then masterfully folds back into itself, all the while telling us a deeply emotional tale of a man's struggle to overcome past tragedy and reconnect with a source of deep love. It is exciting, inventive and often humorous. You can downplay its accomplishments if you want to, but it is a film that captured the national imagination because it tells a phenomenal story with grand ideas and does so with admirable precision and sensitivity.

I thought Inception's screenplay was it's major failing. It seemed very poorly structured, with every scene built around exposition for the first half of the movie.
The film actually plunges us into the dream world early on with very little exposition. In fact, we don't even really know we're there at first. That's the whole opening sequence. The exposition stuff comes later, but again, it's not as if all we're being subjected to is people talking. A plan is being hatched. Discoveries are being made. Personal relationships are developing. There are exciting visuals. The way the film actually operates is quite different than your characterization here. The structure is quite meticulous and utterly effective.

I thought it was quite well structured. The points I agree with though are that some of the expository scenes could have been altered slightly and that the peripheral characters should have been fleshed out. It seems extremely important to me that the consciousnesses sharing the dream be distinguishable from the dream cyphers. They should be real people with hopes, desires and dreams of their own. Perhaps hard to find the time for that and to balance it tonally in an action heist film while still keeping the focus of the film on Leo and his issues, but it's doable I think.

In my book, yes. She had an unfair advantage with a stronger character to work with though.
ME ME ME ME ME! I'd even host. But we should probably wait until the seasons end?
Oooor we could treat the year starting in Fall '10 as NEXT years awards? So the awards that we vote on now would be for the Fall 2009 - Summer 2010 period?
...just a thought. We could take this to the TV Discussion Thread so we don't derail this thread any longer.

This has to be the closest year yet. Nearly every category was a race. At one point, all the best picture nominees had four votes each. Near the end, when I was trying to get people to vote, it was still a four-way tie.
Look forward to doing this again. Hope people enjoyed it. Now it's time for the top ten in which I think Black Swan will take that as well.

Go on.
I enjoy an active camera more than most, but it doesn't stop me from appreciating a static, observant camera. I don't know, I'd say most of the time it's lazy, or betrays a certain cold, unflappable pithiness on the part of the director (and I'm not placing Dogtooth as a high-offender of this, but I think it's tainted a little). Yet, baby doll, Akerman with Jeanne Dielman is a treasure of painstaking effort and genuine fragility.
Three things: 1) yay! 2) abuse of photo thread. 3) I know I will re-watch A History of Violence and it will still be a good movie. But my resolve is fading. 4) I already regret my Best Picture decision. I voted

The claim that static compositions are lazy is patently ridiculous. Lanthimos doesn't need to move his camera because each shot is so rigorously composed and beautifully sustained. And what's wrong with pithiness? Not inherently lazy.
And I'm perfectly fine with classifying this a wholly subjective opinion, thus my use of "bias" in my first post. As I tried to express in my reply, it's a "sensibility felt" (by me) that I respond to negatively - a film made up entirely of static shots feels lazy. As if the filmmaker is too complacent with the tested effect of his smash cuts and drollness. That the drama is such a facade, he/she doesn't think it (or the characters) are worth the effort of making dynamic in any "extra" way.
I like Dogtooth. A lot. It makes up for my impartiality in a number of ways. But my bias stands, and I hold to there being some value in it. I had problems with Dogtooth's dry tone. In this case, a static camera was in pairing with it. I don't have such a strong negative reaction to this with a Weerasathakul film.
And I prefer milked emotionality > pithiness. My Bergman love, for instance?

His ability to milk a scene emotionally has little to do with how he moves his camera, and more with to do with cutting.

Anyway, I'm not trying to make any hard-and-fast rules about moving cameras or static cameras. This is a large, interesting topic that would be better served by me not creating generalities and instead bringing it up about specific films.
So... I don't love Dogtooth's drollness + the entire film being static shots causes me a bit of disapproval.
But I just watched Autumn Sonata and I looove Bergman/Nykvist's almost messy use of free-swiveling camera and zoom.
And I'll take this sort of messy, spontaneous, panning/zooming stuff over flashy, painstakingly formal dolly shots, like Godard's in Weekend (even though I love that epic dolly shot) or "Oh look how dynamic I direct!" stuff like in Atonement (now that's blech), and what I presume is what Ophuls does (haven't seen an Ophuls)?

He's at least as great as Bergman, if not greater.
But more to the point, static framing is a very flexible style, capable of accommodating not only a film like Lanthimos' film, but also Bergman's black and white films, in which he moves his camera a lot less than in a later film like Autumn Sonata. For instance, Michael Haneke doesn't move his camera lot, nor does he do a lot of cutting, but La Pianiste (which puts Black Swan to shame, by the way) has been widely compared to Bergman (Liv Ullman was on the Cannes jury that gave it three prizes, including best actor and actress). If Lantimos is more pithy, as you put it, than either Bergman or Haneke, that's obviously a deliberate choice he's making, rather than any kind of artistic shortcoming.

It's one of those movies like The Departed that goes so far over the top that it turns into self-parody. There's probably nothing harder to do in the movies than grotesque body horror, especially once you've committed to the idea that more is more, so that the more that Aronofsky directs the shit out of it--that is, the more he lays on the J-horror tropes--the more ridiculous it feels. The really sad thing is that Roman Polanski already directed this movie, and he did a much better job of it.

The problem with Black Swan is that it is far too obvious with its exploration of its themes. It is far from being the head trip that many people (not necessarily on this site) have claimed it is. This was effectively parodied in the SNL sketch where Bill Hader repeats the bit about the white swan/black swan dichotomy over and over and over again. The film has its moments, but its ultimately a work that is low on substance, suspense and mystery. Not the worst film we've ever selected as best of the year, but easily the slightest of the available nominees.

First of all, Ophüls is leagues and leagues ahead of a hack like Joe Wright. Naturally. Wasn't trying to suggest Ophuls was a hackish dolly-user; aware his name is thrown about with the masters.
But more to the point, static framing is a very flexible style, capable of accommodating not only a film like Lanthimos' film, but also Bergman's black and white films, in which he moves his camera a lot less than in a later film like Autumn Sonata. Sure. Dogtooth accommodates it, but I don't think particularly interestingly. I won't deny it its vision, but I'm not too much a fan of its vision, which is too much "freak show" tied with an unflappable, clinical camera.
There's more complexity and texture in Haneke's construction. He does many things in response to his characters' actions and emotions. Lanthimos is too detached, his camera too devoted to one-liner mannerism and visual punchline.
This is where I admit I'm generally not a fan of "conceptual" absurdist stuff like Songs from the Second Floor. I'm just not into this type of vision.
A 7 counts for something, though, as Dogtooth does mix things up to some effect, and does have true gravitas.

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!
I was just having this argument on RT. I was starting to lose my mind.
I have to echo baby doll's sentiments here as well, that the film seems "designed to conform to the layman's preexisting ideas about ballet" and so forth. That was my strongest reaction after seeing the film, actually, being convinced that it had absolutely nothing to say about ballet, that it simply traded in obvious and annoying cliches (particularly the interpersonal relationships depicted between some of the dancers, and Winona Ryder's character). Its chosen milieu seemed almost arbitrary, which just strikes me as pointless, or at any rate a missed opportunity. The whole thing just seems conceptually weak or flimsy to me.
