You're in for a treat. You can definitely tell that a "director" is behind that episode.
Still, might be in the middle of the top ten episodes if I were to put it together. But that says more about how good Breaking Bad is. John Dahl's episode in season two is one of the best episodes of any television show that I can think of.
Ezee E
04-04-2011, 04:24 AM
Maybe next episode we could get more into television? Whether it be Television VS. Movies?
Will guys like David Milch, Vince Gilligan, David Simon, Matthew Weiner, and J.J. Abrams be the new "visionaries" since we don't seem to be seeing any new directors in film? JJ is probably the only recognizable name, but if any of those guys creates a new series, you'd be sure that every fan will watch the new one. If David Chase starts a new show, fairly sure that majority of Sopranos fans will at least have their interest peaked.
There doesn't seem to be a show that everyone's watching this instant to discuss. Game of Thrones might be one once it starts as far as discussing a certain show.

Well, television has the advantage there--they have more time to work with, the episodic format, and so on.

Well, I just named two.I've watched a fair amount of The Sopranos, and it's never struck me as anything but purely functional in its approach to form. I haven't watched much of Mad Men, but based on what I've seen, apart from spending more of its budget on the production design and costumes than any other show I can think of, it isn't doing much of interest formally either. Its sense of style is purely a matter of placing dashing individuals in expensive clothing before the camera rather than a matter of mise en scène or montage.

Stand-alone episodes, yes. Entire series? Probably not really. I mean, there are well-shot, cinematic shows but if you mean a show that conveys a lot through formalism, eh... I would doubt it. That isn't really how TV works.

I thought it was pretty obvious that your comment was meant to suggest (or at least, suggest the possibility) that the best of television in the 00s topped the best of film. Baby doll was countering that with the valid point that while television may have great characters, even the best television shows don't come close to matching the formal qualities of the best films, since with tv form is always functional and always in the service of story/plot. Obviously, a hardcore formalist and a hardcore character guy are not going to see eye to eye on this.

Would anyone be interested in restarting this?
I'm thinking: short 60-70 minute episodes on bi-weekly/monthly news for Movies, Music, Comics, Video Games.
We could have a MCer / expert, for each category on whatever news is out for that week and switch up the participants each episode. Example. first cast: (Wats, DDavis, 8, Meg) 2nd cast: (Ezee, Derek, Sven, Morris)
Or we could do a panel type cast with 8-9 questions with 3 participants and a host.
Example Topic #1: This week, David Ayer backtracked on the Joker tattoo reveal: good move/ bad move?
And the participants will debate on the issue.
Thoughts?

So here is the proposed format for the cast. Below are the topics- come prepared to answer these questions, with facts and your best debating skills. Here’s how the show will roll. Since I will be hosting the first episode, I will present these questions to our panel (preferably three casters). It’s the panel’s job to convince the host that their answer is the best. You can use any justification you want. The host will remain impartial (much like a jury) until the end of the topic. Each topic will run for about ~10 minutes with each panel member getting an opportunity to speak. Panelists can refute another panelists point if they feel they have a stronger argument or fact check each other, or if a fact is misrepresented (much like Around the Horn on EPSN). Panelists can also agree with other Panelists if they choose if they feel they are out of the running to win the point on that topic. During the cast, the host will jot down notes on who made the best argument, based on facts, passion, creativity. At the end of the last topic, the panelist with the most points “wins”. If it comes down to a tie between two panelists, there will be a speed round 3-5 questions (that will remain a secret to the panelists). Fastest person to answer will get that topic to debate in 1 quick sentence. The “winner” from each cast earns a spot on the next cast. And it will be an ongoing titler holder on the forums whoever comes away with the most wins. Nothing is at stake, just bragging rights.
To prevent duplicate answers for some of the more specific questions, e-mail me your answers first. (only the answers, not your reason why- that will be discussed during the cast). First come first serve (for the specific questions, not the open-ended questions), if someone has already taken your pick, you will need to pick again. (For example, for topic #1 below, if two people picked Star Wars as their most anticipated movie, the 2nd person who got their answer in would need to pick again- if two people are discussing why Asa Butterfield is a good choice for Spider-man, that’s OK)
Topic Theme; Movies: I went really generic with the movie questions since its the first cast. I'm not against changing the topics, I was just thinking of interesting things we could talk about. Let me know comments below. This is all tentative of course, but just getting the idea out there.
1. What 2015 movie that has not yet been released, should we be most excited for? (and of course why?)
2. Asa Butterfield has been rumored to be the frontrunner for Marvel’s new Spider-man movie. Good choice? Bad Choice? If bad choice, what is your preferred actor?
3. X-Men Apocalypse began filming and the first unofficial shots of Nightcrawler, Jean Gray and Jubilee were leaked. Is there a concern with the ending events Days of Future Past with Apocalypse set in the 80s? And what do you most want to see from Apocalypse story arch?
4. Jurassic Park IV trailer 2 was revealed- Is this movie going to suck?
5. Fast and the Furious 8 was officially announced this week- Which actor would you like to see join this franchise?
6. A new Terminator 5 Trailer was released last week- and it potentially spoiled a major plot point in the movie- Is this a good move? Bad move? Ambivalent?
7. What made you the most excited in the new Star Wars trailer?

Hmm. Not sure how much I can participate on some of those topics. I've kind of made a personal goal to not watch second trailers for movies, unless they play at the theater in front of something I've gone to see. So I haven't seen those Jurassic World or Terminator trailers. I've also set a goal of not seeing any footage from The Force Awakens before I actually see the movie. It's an unrealistic goal but something that makes me excited. I haven't seen either trailer and I've closed my eyes and plugged my ears when it's played in the theater. I've scrolled past some gifs real quick on Tumblr, and I realize it's gonna be tough to avoid, but I think going in fresh would be a cool thing. I've also not read any news about the plot or characters, much less read our thread on the movie. All this to say, I dunno how much I can contribute to nearly half these topics. Bummer. Maybe there can be some humor played out of me abstaining from topics, stepping into a soundproof booth, etc.

Yeah, if the theater's showing the third Avengers trailer or whatever I'll watch it, but I won't watch anything beyond the initial teaser or whatever first trailer there is when it pops up online. Kind of got tired of going to the theater having already seen all the trailers they were gonna show.
So far plugging my ears and humming to myself has been reasonably effective in blocking out the Star Wars trailers. Did the same thing with Avatar a few years back with pretty good success. You see a few seconds here and there on TV ads before you can change the channel or look away. It's harder now with the proliferation of gifs being what it is in so many places around the internet.

I would be interested in getting involved with this, actually, if I can still be considered part of Match Cut enough to participate, but only if the subject of a given segment/episode was interesting to me. Speculation and hype for upcoming franchise blockbusters doesn't get me going. I'm also not interested in getting involved with the planning, so I won't be trying to dictate the contents of these.
I tend to prefer more personal, hang-out type podcasts that are more free-flowing than trying to laundry list. So if we, say, had an episode to talk about the films of Wes Anderson, I'd love to get in on that. And be more inclined to listen, at any rate.
Again, that doesn't mean I should BE on the podcast or that the podcast should in any way suit what I'd be looking for. But if I WERE to get involved, that's more likely to attract me. Not that anyone should even want me involved!
