Shanghai Express is fun enough, but I think it really missed out on being great. An 80 minute runtime can be nice enough for some films, but with this one I think an extra half hour would really have helped in fleshing out some of the many characters, and perhaps give an ending that doesn't feel so rushed. Instead we're left with Dietrich, Brook and a bunch of characters painted in broad strokes. Great use of sets to evoke the feel of the Orient, and enough can't be said about the wonderful use of lighting. If you want an explanation as to what chiaroscuro means, this is the film for you.
