I really hate the testimonials. I dug on Hathaway and Franco. Out of their element, but I liked her energy paired with his drug-enhanced don't-give-a-fuckery. Kirk Douglas got painful, then admirable, then back to painful. Alice in Wonderland deserved no Oscars and only the most derisive of snorts. I appreciated the effects win for Inception and the editing win for The Social Network. Friends were angry Reznor won, but I told them to give the soundtrack a listen on its own. Exit losing was the most depressing part of the night to me. The rest of the awards I didn't much care about. Overall, though, the speeches felt endless, the presenters presenting presenters who presented more presenters felt endless. The show felt endless.

Man I hate The King's Speech.Personally, I'm really glad that they made all the bad people really, really bad, or else I wouldn't have known not to like them. And the fact that the Colin Firth's character had a sad childhood and a father who couldn't show his love for him made him very sympathetic. Also, who would've thought of using the second movement from Beethoven's seventh symphony in a movie? That hasn't been done a million times. Oh, and how about those fish eye shots? They made all the rooms look really big and expensive. And I liked how dark it was so that you could barely see anything. That was very artistic.

Adam

Sxottlan

Not the worst Oscars ever. So they still kept something of the testimonials, but it wasn't as bad as the last two years. Format was otherwise very routine. It is kind of cool now to say that Batman and Nine Nine Nails are Oscar winners.

They really had nothing for Franco to do. But I'm thinking his apparent boredom was a performance piece.

I'm glad Inception won as many as The King's Speech, but I think this is the lowest maximum total for a film in a long time. Really no one I was angry over, except Tom Hooper over David Fincher.

Randy Newman inspired Joanna Newsom so he's cool with me. He sure wrote a crappy song for Toy Story 3, though.

I caught a very few amount of the Oscars, but here were my impressions:

- I don't usually root for Anne Hathaway, but I thought she was great. I usually find myself rooting for James Franco, but he didn't seem delightfully "relaxed," he seemed stiff and awkward and honestly I felt as if he was really nervous and felt sorry for him.

- Melissa Leo does seem very very annoying.

They really had nothing for Franco to do. But I'm thinking his apparent boredom was a performance piece. I think he definitely thought long and hard how best to partake in both attaining Oscar prestige and appeasing his hipster douchebag friends at NYU. I don't think he was good, but I admire him being James Franco.

This was the MTV Movie Awards of Oscar shows. Try-hard, the lot of it.

Yeah I was shocked at Tom Hooper's Cameronness. I literally thought Jim got his hair did the first time the camera hit him.

Yay for Trent.

Hathaway should sing professionally, or at least sing a lot more often. Beautiful voice.

Not a lot of laughs, really. This show needs a Gervais deflating, but that'll never happen.

Old white guys as far as the eye can see.

I liked the mobile orchestra moments. Nice touch.

How come they cut away from Brolin and Bardem? Were they making out or something? It looked like they embraced on the stage at their award. Quick! Cut away to Penelope!

Some good awards and some ugh. Par for the course. I liked The King's Speech, but it's such a tiny film.

I know what it means dude, but there's no escaping the meaning of the word "original." In the case of this particular award, I do believe it is perfectly valid to expect the Academy to award those screenplays that stand out, that are original rather than not based on a previously existing source. I think the seal of quality that comes with "original" (read: unique) is implied. I guess they thought differently.

Happy for the Reznor win. But would have been ecstatic for Banksy to take the documentary award--I'll happily watch Inside Job once it's released on DVD, but Exit recalibrated those notions of truthful documentation so crucial to the category itself that I wish it'd have been awarded. The rest went as expected; and I won our group pool, so that mitigates my apathy.

Pretty sure the Academy has never voted that way, and neither have I for that matter (in our own awards). I don't think a unique or overly original idea in and of itself should really have a strong bearing on the nominations.

Obviously I'm sure you and I differ on the strength of Nolan's work here, so I imagine that's what this boils down to, but regardless I don't think it does or should make much difference how unique of an idea it is.
