View Full Version : Match-cut 2010 lists - Top 10/Bottom 5 - by US RELEASE DATES

Yeah, yeah, another list thread. This is for the big countdown, though.
HERE ARE DA RULEZ. OBEY.
1. Post your 2010 top 10, and your bottom 5-10 (if you want) by US release dates. A full list can be found here (http://www.panix.com/~dangelo/nymaster10.html).
2. To keep the thread tidy, keep your lists in ONE POST ONLY. Update them only by editing the original post. You can make a new post in the thread saying 'updated with [title]' or whatever, but keep in mind such posting only makes you an attention whore, on account of nobody cares.
3. ENGLISH TITLES ONLY.
4. Deadline is late Feb, or alternatively, when Kurosawa Fan is happy with his list.
Any further questions can be directed towards Billy Bob Thornton, in one his many roles as a brutish authority figure.

Not underrated precisely, but some films I might've put on my ballot except that no one else is going to vote for them, so really what's the point?: A Film Unfinished (Yael Hersonsky); The Girl on the Train (André Téchiné); Henri-Georges Clouzot's Inferno (Serge Bromberg and Ruxandra Medrea); Hereafter (Clint Eastwood); Last Train Home (Lixin Fan); The Misfortunates (Felix van Groenineg); The Shaft (Zhang Chi); The Trotsky (Jacob Tierney); You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (Woody Allen); Women Without Men (Shirin Neshat); Inception (Christopher Nolan) and The Social Network (David Fincher).

Non-English titles should be allowed for stuff like Vincere because 1) Vincere sounds stupid and 2) it's known by that name in the US, like, say, La Dolce Vita (does anyone call that The Sweet Life?).

Titanic II is a movie...?
Yep. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1640571/)
It's from The Asylum, makers of such classic DTV mockbusters like Transmorphers, The Day The Earth Stopped, and Paranormal Entity.
My roommate downloaded it one day and we watched it after coming back wasted from a party one night, and it was so hilariously bad we had to pause the movie for 2 minutes for us to stop laughing. Horrific acting and writing, obviously shot in a hotel/mall, and hilariously bad visual effects make it one of the worst movies of all time.
If it doesn't count though because it's DTV, I'll take it off.

I saw 20 movies this year worse than Leap Year. It had a few good looking shots and all of the actors who are good in most of the things they are in phoned it in, which isn't good but could be so much worse.

Let the record show that my favorite movie of the year (Dogtooth) is loaded with sapphic lovemaking. My dislike of The Kids Are All Right is based 100% on me finding the film itself such an insufferable drag. I hope it comes in first place in the Match-Cut Worst Film race, so that future generations may learn the easy way what I had to learn the hard way

That's rather an odd thing to say. It comes off as a bit fanboyish...assuming we didn't like it because it was about gay people (which is really the only conclusion I can draw from the neocon remark).
I heavily disliked the film because I felt its pacing was terrible and its self-importance overwhelmed what could have been a good idea.
We get it. Homosexual couples are just like heterosexual couples! See how NORMAL they are? See how DYSFUNCTIONAL they are? Huh? see? Just like Heterosexual couples. Wow! They ARE just like us.
I swear, if one of the characters had patted themselves on the back, I would not have been surprised.
I just can't stand films that drown or revel in their own perceived social importance. It killed the film for me.
The performances deserved a better movie.

Take Boner more seriously next time.
Also, I still don't really understand this nonsense about the film's alleged self-importance regarding its non-straight couple run family. The only time it gets there is when they toss Ruffalo aside. I guess you can infer whatever you want from the rest of it, and did.

I agree that this is the film's greatest flaw, but I think it ultimately transcends it with a lived-in feel and a bit of welcome messiness in the end. But worst film of the year seems like an over-the-top designation for a film whose worst crime is its goal to flatter viewers. The neocon remark was slightly in jest.

Say whaa?!?
For a documentary that tries to show us how manipulative Nazi's propaganda machine is, it's extremely heavy-handed. I don't think there is a moment of quietness; the film-makers never step back and let the unfinished film speak for itself. Instead they employ countless numbers of outside material to shape the narrative. One I remember so well is the excerpt from the diary of the guy who ran the ghetto. A portion is read in a voice-over for about 5 minutes. Then the diary is never mentioned again. It seems to me, the movie wants to inform us about something every single minute of it, and it does stretch itself trying to do so.
Perhaps I am more interested in the unfinished film rather than this documentary. I don't dislike it, really, but I find its weak spot countering its message.

Well, now I don't live in that town anymore. Now I live in a smaller town outside of the POSDT, and it only has one grocery store, and I'm pretty sure it's named after the owner (Pat), and it's everything that Walmart isn't, which is to say the selection sucks and everything is a dollar more expensive. Let's see you handle me in THAT parking lot!

Opinion, opinion, opinion. Its one thing to disagree, its another to present your opinion as fact.
Discussion is one thing, high-brow, nose in the air dismissals of others opinions is quite another.
TBH, its why I've stopped posting here as much. Lately, the pretentiousness of some of the people on this site has just made it a less palatable place to hang out.

Indeed Fezzik. I don't take it to heart, but it just makes the actual discussion boring to have if it's going to go the way of babydoll (sorry to pick you out, but it's an example).

THE NEW DEADLINE IS AFTER I SEE BOTH BLUE VALENTINE AND TRUE GRIT. AND MAYBE 127 Hours.Yeah, none of those movies are going to make your list. Just post it already.

Let me break it down for you since you seem very confused for no good reason. The films people rewatch are often good films. Many people think Blue Valentine is a good film. Therefore, some of those many people will choose to rewatch Blue Valentine because it is a good film.

I mean, who the hell remembers The Savages or The Station Agent or Girlfight? Is Blue Valentine really that much better than the ghosts of Sundance past? I don't think it's even the best Sundance movie with these actors (I prefer Half Nelson and Wendy and Lucy, and maybe The Slaughter Rule while we're at it).

The Savages is excellent.I felt like I was forgetting it as I was watching it. I mean, I guess it's an okay actors' vehicle for Linney and Hoffman (both of whom I like), but it has no more formal interest than Please Give or The Messenger or most other Sundance mediocrities.

You are a silly man. Yes, it's a sad movie, but it's beautifully shot and incredibly well-acted. I don't see why it's so hard to see why someone would rewatch it or, more importantly, why the fuck it matters so much that you continually mention it as if the fact that it's so powerful you wouldn't want to see it again is somehow a knock against the film. It's vexing, E.
All that you have said sucks.

I like it a tad more that the first two, never seen the second. But yes, it's a lot better than The Savages and Girlfight.

This I agree with. It felt like an exercise in miserabilism, yet for those who like it, I still could understand why they'd want to rewatch it.

Your need to label films ("Oscar bait," "Sundance," etc.), whether others would agree with said label or not, and then use that arbitrary label as some definitive critique of the particular film is silly and amusing to me.

That's bold, Jerry. Bold!I only meant "bold" in the sense that I chose a film nobody else is likely to even include in their lists, so it won't have any bearing on the final results. Obviously a poor choice of words, I should have said idiosyncratic or something. *curls into defensive Metroid-ball position, weeps*

There's still a seemingly significant bunch of stuff I need to see, but in terms of how things roughly look for me before the deadline:
1. Inception
2. Black Swan
3. 127 Hours
4. Exit Through The Gift Shop
5. Shutter Island
6. Let Me In
7. The American
8. Blue Valentine
9. Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 1
10. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

True nuff. I probably wouldn't say it's "awesome" in the same way I'd say, like, The Big Lebowski is "awesome," but I don't see what makes Blue Valentine so utterly depressing that you can't understand how anyone could ever want to sit through it again. I mean, films like Mulholland Dr. and Taxi Driver are draining, powerful films yet I can't imagine you'd be shocked to hear people have seen them more than once. Not comparing them qualitywise, just trying to get why people rewatching a film that they like a lot is such a hard concept to grasp.

Your need to label films ("Oscar bait," "Sundance," etc.), whether others would agree with said label or not, and then use that arbitrary label as some definitive critique of the particular film is silly and amusing to me.I've just been down this road so many times over the years. Sundance tends to support a certain kind of cinema that is more script- and actor-driven--which is to say, fairly conservative. It's hard to sell audacious formal experiments to a mass audience (how do you sell Film socialisme to some one who's never seen a Godard movie?). But an Ozarks noir, or a feel-good comedy about a lesbian marriage, or breakup movie with two attractive stars giving Oscar-caliber performances. These films might not sell themselves precisely, but they can be marketed to a fairly wide audience.
So Harvey Weinstein goes to Sundance and picks up Blue Valentine. And a few months later, it opens in limited release. Of course, there are better options out there, but if you're a reviewer, why waste your breath on something like Les Herbes folles, which is simply too weird for mass consumption? On the other hand, Blue Valentine could go wide and get an Oscar nomination--and compared to most other movies in wide release right now, it looks pretty good. So all the reviewers give it unambiguous rave reviews with particular emphasis on how good the two leads are, so that people in Cincinnati will see the film when it opens wide.
Here's another example: Why did Ebert put The Kids Are All Right in his top ten for the year if not to try to influence the Oscar race? Did the film really grow on him in the months after he wrote his three and a half star review? Did the film reveal new aspects of itself to him on second and third viewing? Or is it more likely that he thought Annette Benning deserved an Oscar nomination, and was worried that Academy voters would forget a movie that opened back in the summer?

Well (and I'm not trying to defend exactly, just explain), I noticed that Ebert has many different lists--a top 10, but then a top 10 documentaries, top 10 animated films, top 10 foreign films, and top 10 "art" films (however he defines that...). So, it's almost like the top 10 is for the mainstream audience. I don't know why he does that though.
I'm not sure why you are making out script-driven and/or actor-driven movies to be an inherently bad thing.
Anyhow, I wanted to get to more movies, but I don't have time.
1. Our Beloved Month of August
2. Mother
3. Alamar
4. Another Year
5. Secret Sunshine
6. Exit Through the Gift Shop
7. A Prophet
8. Dogtooth
9. The Social Network
10. Everyone Else
ETA: Five Worst
1. Leap Year
2. Morning Glory
3. Death at a Funeral
4. Enter The Void
5. The Fighter
Edit: Put in Another Year, and switched rankings around a little.

Les Herbes folles is also fairly script- and actor-driven, but that didn't stop Resnais from having an interesting style.

Blue Valentine...[not] very much, if any, stylistic interest.
I don't see this; the use of video & 16mm for past and present scenes, the pervasive use of reflective surfaces, the echoing opening & closing shots, the deliberate spatial disorientation in the 'future room' scenes... no matter what you think of the film, there are a number of facets that show Cianfrance has a very specific visual plan for it. To lump it in with a point-and-shoot affair like Please Give is just absurd.
EDIT: FWIW, Cianfrance was a student of Stan Brakhage.
