Not a damn thing. Always been a little weary since he seems a very niche filmmaker (not that I don't have those myself) and opinions on the films vary so much it is tough to know where to start. A few seem to have a generally positive consensus, such as Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting which will probably be my first whenever I manage to get to it.

Klimt - 7
That Day - 8

Still a whole lot I'm pretty anxious to see by him. I'll probably get to City of Pirates, Time Regained, or Genealogies next.

He's very niche, but his available films from Three Lives and Only One Death onward are pretty accessible. Avoid his 80s work at all costs until you're more familiar with him (AKA a big fan).

Whoa, we're already to him?

Well, I did the directors I was supposed to do in the first place, to then come back and do Ezee's and dreamdead's. The schedule should go like this, if you have no objections:

You: Mira Nair
Me: Joseph L. Mankiewicz
You: Lawrence Olivier
Me: Leo McCarey
You: Ross McElwee
Me: Josef von Sternberg
You: Michael Cimino
Me: Aleksei German

Guess what? I haven't seen a single movie from any of these directors except Cimino. :|

You say this having not seen it though? But yeah I imagine Match Cut really liking that one. It's quality.

Brightside what should I view from him first? I like his 'stache, and you won't stop talking about his movies, so I figure I should view something from him, soon.

If you have Netflix, Klimt is on IW. Ignore Melville's incorrect rating and focus on mine.

Added Dialogues of the Exiled, which was like cut-rate Fassbinder, much like Dog's Dialogues was cut-rate Chris Marker. Don't worry Brightside, still gonna watch City of Pirates soon.

You guys are making me feel bad. I'm whoring this guy out and too many people aren't enjoying him. Granted, I wouldn't expect most of his 70s or 80s work to appeal to many people, but I'll hold out hope for your City of Pirates viewing.

To be fair, the first half-hour of Mysteries of Lisbon I caught at TIFF last year was very promising and displayed mastery. Only bailed cos I was too exhausted to sit through a 4.5 hour film after a week of nonstop movies.

Klimt is streamable on Netflix, but apparently it's an extremely producer-butchered cut.

Added City of Pirates - third time's a charm, it seems. One of the most powerfully surreal films I've seen; my 'fascination with':'comprehension of' ratio was way out of whack, but all for the better. That said, I think slogging through Dialogues of the Exiled helped me appreciate some of the themes that are being dealt with in this film in a more covert manner. I particularly found the final scenes really powerful in their evocation of the displacement felt by Chilean exiles, and the desire to revert to a more elemental state of being. Loved the cognitive dissonance created by the classically sweeping music score and the complete absence of a conventional narrative. Would love to see this on the big screen; the images are uniformly gobsmacking.

Oh man, I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Boner. The film has a dark and amusing sense of humor as well, namely in the two policemen and the father. I bet you'd enjoy The Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting. It's only a shade over an hour, so it's not like you'd be losing much. Plus, Vierny shot it.

The Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting - 8

The in-depth art analysis and subtly contrasting paintings with cinema is innately interesting stuff to me, but I have to admit when the movie explains the backstory of the fourth painting in excruciating detail, I started zoning out (it doesn't help that the main character himself falls asleep while explaining it to us). Still, it's definitely a unique experience, quite unlike any other movie I can remember.

Thoughts? The first part was totally engaging. The film lost me slowly after that. Mastroianni does an amazing job considering he'd be dead shortly after the film was released. I imagine Ruiz made a great film over the years, but this one isn't it. Still it was intriguing enough for me to delve deeper.

Yeah, though I'd much rather have a director like Ruiz highlighted than have Jay Roach week or some such nonsense.
