A remake from the same year? This is me posting late night. Mistakes get made. I'm not sure why Naruse got inserted though.

EDIT: I got it. I was in the Celeb Obit thread right before updating my sig, and I remember thinking how Pete Postlethwaite was going to get a bunch of replies and Hideko Takamine's (<----the Naruse connection) death would just slip right by.

I did know that was your favorite Ray, and to be honest I figured you would chastise me for only three stars. I'm a little gun shy around you these days.

Takamine!!?? Oh, that is horrible. I will have to post in the Celeb Obit thread when I have the time or perhaps when I´m back from vacation, I´ll do a thread on her. Truly one of the greatest actresses, period.

I kid about the Ray - my love for Bitter Victory and, to a lesser degree, Born to Be Bad, is fairly uncommon, so I usually don´t expect high ratings from others for those.

I never even considered moving it at any point, and I watched a lot of great films last year. I don't feel as strongly about Yang's film, but that more to do with Kieslowski's being a Top 10 of all-time sort of thing.

1. Fantastic Mr. Fox (Anderson '09)
2. Fubar (Dowse '02)

Beyond what seemed like some clumsy / overly expository writing, I thought Anderson's film was wonderful. The combination of his familiar aesthetics and animal puppets were an endless delight. I was constantly grinning or even roaring with laughter at even the simplest of staging techniques (Ash walking in and out of the doorway while brushing his teeth in a master shot, for example). I loved the way jokes repeated with unexpected reversals (give me a signal that something's getting through) and the surprising dramatic payoff for seemingly minor details (the phobias).

Weird that I don't usually pay much attention to Anderson these days, but I still find his films immensely enjoyable when I do finally get around to seeing them.

Are you hesitant to hand out the heavy praise to films on first viewings?

Kind of. I think I'm an impatient viewer, so I remember dead spots and clunky aspects, even in films I end up really liking. When it comes to rating, those problems still stand out.

Usually, when I go back and watch it again, knowing about the film as a whole, the "dead spots" or whatever are much, much less of a problem (and in fact are purposeful given the thrust of the film), and the rating increases.

Just looking over my nerdy viewing log, these are my highest rated first viewings over the past few years:

Les Diaboliques - 86
Laputa: Castle in the Sky - 85
The Asphalt Jungle - 84
The Train - 83
Cache - 83

So, par for the course, really. I guess also, to me, a truly great film must withstand multiple viewings, so I factor than in as well.

B-side
01-06-2011, 06:33 PM
I don't see any problems with that, especially given that I'm pretty similar myself. I may not be quite as strict on the ratings front, though.

MacGuffin

Since I try to enjoy the positive aspects of any given movie as much as possible on first viewing, I find that I'm more privy to the flaws of a film on a second viewing. That said, I really do only hand out anything above a 9 or a **** to films I feel truly stand above everything else. I imagine as I begin to see more, this standard will no doubt change. Such is the flaw of using such a system at such an early point in my cinephile career.

Seconds looks awesome, by the way.

I just noticed that on imdb there are two dates for movies. Should I quote the date near the top (in parenthesis next to the title) or the one where it says release date below in the overview?

I think people are going to know which Uncle Boonmie Who Can Recall His Past Lives and My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done you are referring to, without the date.

Oooo, fun!

I've only seen three of the above. Sweetgrass was awesome, probably more than a film about sheep should ever be. Offside was good, but I've never been hot on Panahi. I'll take Kiarostami and Majidi for Iranian filmmakers. To's film had a great opening followed by a bunch of forgettable stuff.

I'm not big on any of those. I mean, 2011 is two weeks old, so that's OK.
Kiarostami is the greatest of all filmmakers. I was thrilled by all of Breaking News. I loved the bandits and the killers cooking and sharing a meal. So To. Then the bit with the phone, tracking him via sound. To incorporates rather inplausable cinematic pleasures into his films...Hitchcockian.

Went the Day Well is interesting, tense. Some quite devastating moments.

You should probably edit out all the images in your quoting!

3 . Experiment Perilous (1944, Tourneur)

Yep. Ceylan’s other films are all fine enough, but this must be the pièce de résistance, if I want to be all fancy and shit. Mostly in the manner this jarring but beautiful abstraction is formed just by the way he cuts the film – the beach sequence being the strongest. Also, totally proportional to my recurring film interests.

Interstate for a little bit, writing (but not writing, as it happens). The 2011 Cinémathèque calendar was pleasing, at least the few rarities, such as the de Oliveira and the Philiberts and who the heck is the Australian John Hughes?

Two of these definitely end with the main character killing themself, and in one more, I'm not totally certain whether it was suicide or not. Oh, and one more ends with the hero killing himself, but only in a dream.

If you like The Bells Toll for the Barefooted then check out A Song About the Gray Pigeon. I like the latter more, but I think the former has a better chance with you, though I'm not entirely sure why. Either way both are great.

Last 15 minutes of TLC are unequivocal off-the-chain awesomeness.I have a slight problem with the easy ending. Powell's character is out for revenge, gets it, and immediately sympathizes with the General's death. The End. It all happens too quick. I do agree that the post-flashback sequence up to that point is crazy good. Also interesting is the use of a double climax, the train crash ending the flashback is almost as great as the Hollywood set climax. Von Sternberg's portrayal of the Hollywood system is also an eye-opener.

Oh, man, is it ever. Though that might be the source of my tiniest criticism - maybe it's a bit too densely plotted (in that, held to the light of a second viewing, some scrutiny may reveal plot holes that I feel are present -- although that's probably more a fault of the source material). But still, having made that caveat, WOW what a film. If ever there was a movie for the Match-Cut crowd, this it it. Nakashima's direction was amazing and downright intoxicating in the way the various confessions paint the picture and fill in gaps, until it builds to the insane crescendo you mention. No wonder this film has been a huge smash in Japan (tho, I can't believe it was Japan's submission for an Oscar nod). I'm still pretty blown away...never thought anyone could outdo Chan-wook Park on the revenge film front. Oh, and what about that soundtrack? My god, utterly brilliant, I kept thinking, "Why can't all soundtracks be like this?" (or at least as good) And, finally, what a terrific performance by Takako Matsu. Her opening 20 minute-or-so monologue was worth the price of admission.

This was a brilliant film and Nakashima shoots to the top of my list of "must-see" directors.
