Good to great in roughly that order. Herzog's film is clumsy at times but ultimately essential given the importance of its footage. Jia's film is one of his best documentaries, more conventional and accessible perhaps than something like Useless (I Wish I Knew has interesting people talking about movies for a good amount of the runtime, so of course it's engaging), but still very much a piece of his larger conceptual and political work. Critics who dismissed it as a commercial for Shanghai World's Fair were way off the mark. Uncle Boonmee is obscure at times even for this Joe fan, but it starts to take on new life when it can be considered in the framework of his entire Primitive project (of which I've only seen bits and pieces, admittedly). I need to watch it again to collect my thoughts, but even on a superficial level there are moments of warmth and astonishment (the dinner scene is one of my favorite scenes in any movie this year). Also, Joe's films have some of the best sound design going.

In baby doll's defense, I'm pretty sure imdb is wrong. Wikipedia for instance supports that the film has never secured a theatrical distribution of any kind and has only been seen at festivals; not to mention I know it has been stuck in legal disputes regarding distribution and the articles I found online indicate that this new release is its first cinema release.

i just don't see a whole lot of variety from him. This seems to play very much to his Sideways type character to me. Though I generally like the guy quite a bit. Perhaps its the script isn't as strong as previous films where he plays a craggy, sarcastic, middle aged weirdo with a major chipn his shoulder. It might be that the movie reminded me of Love and Other Drugs, only with Jewish people.

I enjoyed it on a fundamental level of "fun," because Araki just knows how to make those types of lurid, compulsively watchable bonkers films I used to relish in watching at 1am on IFC when I was in high school. But, again, it is really interesting that he commented in the Q & A on how optimistic he is in real life at his current age, and I think that's what made the film feel like a detached parody--or, being kinder--a pastiche of his previous work: just a fluffy regurgitation of his favorites themes, hedonistic characters, and modern fascinations. In this case, he just doesn't have a Doom Generation left in him anymore because he's a different person. I need the genuine angst with the camp, because I still find his youthful, sordid, disillusioned (and, sure, naive) screeds against society (like Doom) really refreshing and fun.

Adopts The Driver/Two-Lane Blacktop's approach to characterisation, paring its characters down to their professions & basic impulses (The Rock's even called 'The Driver')... also introduces those professions with title cards. As such, it never really commits to its lean aspirations. All of which is to say that it's at least more interesting than one'd expect.

Why?The direction/editing is pretty hacky, it's almost comical how little the film makes out of its premise, and there's just a vibe of going through the motions to it, albeit as briskly, sadistically, and mean-spiritedly as possible. At least Simon West's Bruckheimer-fueled Con Air had a sense of levity, wit, and absurdism to it.

It's not nearly as crazy as Sono can be, but with the focus on the disillusionment and pressures of Japanese youth the comparison seems apt. The last 30 minutes rock, and it has a pretty great soundtrack to boot. I can't wait to hear what you think. Eh, not sure. A lot of the enjoyment I derived from the film was due to the silly stuff they were doing with 3D, and there were even some moments where I thought their use of 3D was smart or clever (I don't want to spoil anything, but they play with two dimensional texures in the film and use 3D to create these neat rippling and cascading effects in certain shots).

This thing really was designed to be seen in 3D, to the point where I probably wouldn't want to watch it in 2D (which I wouldn't say about Tron or Avatar).

The Four Times is not like that film where your friend says it should only be seen in the cinema and you say ‘sure’ and then watch it on DVD with indistinguishable effect. They should screen this at Imax, because it’s all about opening your eyes wider and how can you do that if you watch it on your shitty Iphone which only really results in the reverse. Saying that, it’s at its best when its mise en scene is blocked off in front of you and what’s left is only a black screen with rumbling atmos creaking into your ear. Really awesome, and I feel like the mostly unrelated-except-superficially El somni (2008) and Sweetgrass (2009) were rehearsals and this is where it peaks.

I had to make a phone call using my shitty iphone, so I missed everything between right after the shot of the Easter parade and the funeral. Obviously the dude died, but what else did I miss? It was probably something like five minutes, fuck.

Dude, seriously? You missed the best part. From your beloved Michael Sicinski:

The Four Times' finest set piece entails a single-shot aerial view of humans, in a Passion Play procession (pretending to attain Spiritual Time) invading the space of the goats and the farm dog who guards them. A series of disasters results, but we see the dog struggle to maintain order, like a bureaucratic Buster Keaton.

Worth forking out the money for a repeat of that scene alone.

Yeah, my grade was also only a mild/marginal "nay," too--but I don't know if "half-assed" is the correct criticism; I think it's more a problem of contemporary Araki trying to make a vintage Araki movie, but being too different of a person to capture his youthful angst and panache necessary to satisfy. I expect more from the messy emptiness of Gregg Araki movies--they're usually fun, chaotic and significantly empty; Kaboom is fun, but too self-derivative and empty empty.

Go on.

not a particularly negative nay, just barely

Hobo with a Shotgun is one of many recent strings at reviving the Grindhouse aesthetic. Made on little money in a dirty ass town (fracking Halifax), the film is in a reserved group of films that legitimately feels like a throwback, rather then a big blockbuster disguised as low budget trash. The film actually feels organic and though often grimmy, there is this sense that the filmmakers are making the best of their aesthetic choice, pushing boundaries to create interesting and even beautiful compositions. This is apparent especially in interiors, where space and light frame the character's faces. Coloured gels are used quite effectively to create unified moods and to mask the low budget. The score and soundtrack similarly fit perfectly, and the original music is not only fitting, it's downright good. The filmmakers really have a great sense of what it means to create a grindhouse aesthetic. Then again, the film fails on other levels. Though it certainly has some winking moments, the film is played too straight and the attempts at comedy -- though true to what it is paying homage to, fall flat. The film feels too serious, and it's absurdity is alienating rather then empowering. Rutger Hauer is a force to be reckoned with and he plays his character sensitively but also with enough senility and cynicism that he doesn't feel like a stock character. He shakes our expectations, and doesn't allow us to laugh at or celebrate his character comfortably. Overall it's an okay film. I'm not sure I would have been as happy if I had paid full price for it, but if you like the whole grindhouse thing, gore and guts, you'll probably enjoy it.

Even worse. My friend from Dartmouth actually told me today it was filmed in his town, so then I IMDBed it and it said it was shot in Halifax only. Sometimes he says he's from Halifax, even though he isn't, because people don't know what a Dartmouth is. Never doubt a Nova Scotian is the lesson learned today.
