I can't imagine why three of you liked this. I'm guessing it has to be because of the camerawork, which is admittedly quite good. But dear god, that was a mind-numbingly idiotic ending. All in all, a pretty shallow effort.

Can't fathom the largely negative Venice reviews, this is mad solid even if it's lacking in immediately apparent dramatic stakes. It is, however, possible that I was blinded to its faults by Élodie Bouchez. Hott damn.

Quebecois double feature!

Incendies: Nay

Had my doubts within the first 15 minutes, and they were consistently confirmed throughout the calculated, ponderous running time. It's heavy-handed, sensationalistic melodrama that is too literal and obvious to be poetic, and too abstract to reflect upon actual behavioral or historic truth.

Curling: Yay

Had my doubts within the first 15 minutes, and they were consistently debunked throughout the beautifully crafted, poignant remainder of time. It has all the hallmarks of a heavy-handed art film about communication in an isolated community, but it has such a compassionate core and genuine, and rather devastating, moments of tiny--but significant--epiphanies. The performances are so lived-in that the most absurd logic becomes disturbingly plausible. I'll admit--I was sold at the "I Think We're Alone Now" post-dinner scene. Heartbreaking.

Couldn't agree more; it's the best film of its kind since Uzak. US distribution, plz. Disagreed re: Incendies, but my praise admittedly doesn't extend far beyond 'well-crafted' and 'engrossing', so nevermind.

So entirely genuine and damn earnest that the occasional false note and transparent screenplay are somewhat easy to overlook; more impressive than the outstandingly lived-in performances is the way the ensemble creates such plausible dynamics.

Every Day - Nay

Indie family dramedy with absolutely nothing new or surprising or remotely interesting going on. Oh, shit! Having elderly parents, teenage children, a crappy job, and a long-lasting marriage is really tough stuff!

Not even sure how I got turned onto this movie, it got like 39% on RT, but somehow there it was on my Netflix queue. Gotta manage that more closely next time.

The Butcher, the Chef and the Swordsman - yay

Kinda stupid, but also kinda fun. I wasn't really feeling it until Masanobu Ando showed up, but his segment won me over, maybe because of my weakness for culinary antics. I suppose I could still go either way on this, and there is a lot here that doesn't work (the film could probably lose the first ten minutes just for starters, it has a really rough and frankly needless opening given the premise and narrative structure), but I do like the premise and I ended up having an enjoyable enough time so a mild yay.

Battle: Los Angeles - bigger nay

I can't believe that of these two, Sucker Punch seems to be the one that's gotten the harsher reception. Maybe it's because expectations were higher, but for everything that Snyder's film did badly, at least it seemed (to me) like it was trying, even if its methods of delivering a complicated story or entertaining action were to throw ten things at the screen at once with the hopes that at least some of it stuck. Battle: LA is just a shockingly boring, incomprehensibly shot and beyond cliche-ridden movie that seems to make no effort to have any sort of point to it. I find that way more time-wasting, since it didn't even seem to have enough of anything to it to outright offend me or engage me for long enough to eventually disappoint me.

That is a pretty terrible habit. Given the option, I tend to prefer to see film adaptations before reading the original novel. I'll admit it. 25% of my reaction is probably unfair. My brain was nitpicking like the worst kind of purist. Then there were the gutless omissions and shameful simplifications...

But I wouldn't like this movie whether or not I read the book, I'm sure of it. Pride and Prejudice and No Country For Old Men managed to pass the test, but this and Atonement failed. Unspectacularly.

Tyrannosaur: Hmmm, let me...
Attenberg: ...rest on it.

Ok, I've slept a few nights on these, I guess (they're both so darn earnest, even though their flaws are still irritating).

Tyrannosaur: Minor nay

Raw, committed performances (well, the center two, at least--Eddie Marsan's significant character is a fucking joke), but the climaxes are obviously telegraphed--not foreshadowed--early in the film and the drama is a bit forced.

Attenberg: Minor yay

Unique but awfully scattered. Its observation on eccentric human behavior is like Dogtooth, but without the actual, convincing narrative frame necessary to shape it.

Public Speaking: Yay
Bill Cunningham, New York: Yay

Win Win - nay. Perhaps I should clarify. Thinking back to all the cutesy indie movies I've seen that this one seems similar to, one should remember to make it more Junebug, more Waitress. Less Upside of Anger. Less Little Miss Sunshine. In other words, the nonsensical tenth grade ethics nature of the proceedings can't be disguised because the emotions within are so forced and artificial. I also officially can no longer stand Paul Giamatti.

Yes. I have three words for Fukunaga: why so serious?? The entire film is played with the same note of moodiness or portent (which I frankly found mind-numbingly dull). It's romanticized to a fault, Fukunaga wasting so much time with his mood-building, and, yes, absolutely reductive.

Very mildly so, since it barely holds together by the final act with the script scrambling to find use for all of its characters and pretty much failing to do so by the end. At the same time though, I actually wish there was more of the supporting characters, especially when it came to Gerwig and Jasenovic's relationship, and hell, I even would have liked to see more Luda.

But it made me laugh out loud multiple times, I thought the leads were likeable throughout (even Kutcher!) even when the plot forced them into cliche-ville, and I'm struggling to think of a better mainstream romantic comedy of recent. So if that all adds up to its criteria, then it passes.

I actually nayed it and reminded E of its release date several times (sorry E, luv yr work, but c'mon...). I thought the lip-sync'd transcript technique was striking at first, but then became more distancing (in a bad way) and eventually numbing as the more tragic details of Dunbar's life are imparted. It was, however, my 4th film of a festival day so I'd like to give it another chance. Everyone else's crazy about it too, so you'd best ignore me in this case.

That said, why are you wary of explicit fact/fiction hybrid docos? I'm more wary of docos that purport to be strictly fact, as if oblivious to the porous distinction between both forms.

Fast Five - weak yay

I didn't think that I could be disappointed with the movie since I shouldn't have really been looking for anything substantial with it, though at the same time I still mostly admire it for trying to do more than I expected, despite the fact that there's a lot of middle-of-the-road fat in between it all. It's a very entertaining bad movie with enough well-constructed and exciting action to make it worthwhile. Plus unintentional lulz bring up the fun levels.

That said, why are you wary of explicit fact/fiction hybrid docos? I'm more wary of docos that purport to be strictly fact, as if oblivious to the porous distinction between both forms.

I'm more against it aesthetically rather than conceptually. The idea always sound potent, but I have a deep fear of recreations; they're almost always cheesy and/or demean the subject and content (as you think The Arbor did, but I may see for myself this week).

I liked it enough. Didn't expect to find it as creepy as I did, so that sort of surprise probably helped my overall enjoyment of it. And although I won't disagree with those that say a lot of what goes on in the third act is less well-crafted than the first section of the movie, I still think a lot of it finds a way of keeping things new and interesting right when you think you've fully grasped the look and feel of it all. Without spoiling exactly what, some scenes later on with certain props and musical cues keep things hilariously offbeat, whether or not it keeps the proper mood.

Oh, were you a fan or just looking forward to this one? It's Woody's best since Sweet and Lowdown and perhaps even better than that one. Tough to say since I got stuck in the front row, about 10 feet from the screen, but the fact that I still enjoyed it despite the headache and neck pains that set in about halfway through speaks to the quality of the film. This should make fans of Purple Rose of Cairo happy, though I actually like this one more.

Considering Cairo is my favorite Allen film, I'm really psyched for this.

Yeah, it's really a nice blend of the magical realism of Cairo, self-reflexive yet clever pessimism and the more absurd humor missing from his films of late. It's also nice seeing Wilson in a good movie again.

It's really just a dumb action flick, and it blatantly steals from several other franchises, everything from Indiana Jones to Pirates of the Caribbean. But despite its unoriginality, it's so damn fun that you can't help but love it. My friends and I went in fully expecting it to suck, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that it, in fact, wasn't completely horrible!

And after looking it up afterwards, it literally has nothing at all to do with the source material it's based off of. There are no vampires in the original story, whereas this movie is based entirely around them. So we joked that the guy in the trailer who constantly insists that "there is no vampire menace" just happened to have a copy of the graphic novel on hand.
