I think the algorithms are much more attuned to genre than actors or directors, but yeah, they aren't terribly helpful.

I'm always amused that I get recommendations based one movie I watched. And sometimes I don't even like the movie I watched, and yet they are offering recs based off a movie I didn't care for.

Yeah, I may start something and decide I don't care for it after 20 minutes and turn it off. Then I get a whole list of recommendations based on the fact that I started it.

For people who like lame cartoons, Regular Show Season 2

I find Adventure Time and Regular Show watchable, but nothing extraordinary. I realize that I may feel this way toward these shows because I'm old and not their demographic. That said, Adventure Time's uniqueness makes it stand out from Regular Show.

ledfloyd
05-29-2014, 04:08 PM
I just feel like I'm humoring Adventure Time a lot more often. The premise intrigues me, but I spend a lot of time merely tolerating it. It seems much more directed towards children, and if I was in the target demographic I would probably prefer it.

Regular Show is much more on my wavelength at this point in my life.

Ivan Drago

For me, both of them are great in their own way. Adventure Time is a cartoon with substance, a trippy visual style, and a major Don Hertzfeldt influence. Regular Show is a cartoon that's hilarious in every facet, from its visual jokes, the banter between its main characters, and its concept of making normal life abnormal. Plus, it has an anthropomorphic gumball machine and a blue jay named Mordecai.

Henry Gale
05-30-2014, 08:05 AM
I love Adventure Time to death but I feel like major hurdle for people getting into it that if they start from the beginning, so much of the first season is made up of its most basic and self-contained stories that don't amount to much other than some hilarious but mostly inconsequential gags and ideas. Once things become more serialized, surreal and even gorgeously esoteric with long-term repercussions (particularly in Season 5 and what's out so far of Season 6), it truly becomes something entirely its own, especially for something objectively intended for kids.

I mean, this is a show that's giving Masaaki Yuasa free rein for an entire episode next month:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sg1kGCXO9zs

Regular Show, on the other hand, is... alright I guess. Some of the stories are fun and it definitely has a cool universe that I find myself liking a lot of stuff in, but I honestly just find Mordecai and Rigby to be such annoying sociopaths that I always wished the show would find some ways to throw consequences or even hackneyed lessons their way, or at the very least center its storylines around the other characters. I really feel like the voice acting for the two of them is so obnoxiously overplayed and sucks the comedy out of so much of that goes on too. Maybe it's similar to Adventure Time in that changes over time, but I'm not sure how much I care since I really couldn't bother making it through that first season.

and here are the films directed by Woody Allen that are on netflix instant:

I looked to see if Battle Royale is still on Instant - it's not - and I found this user review:

Where are Ozu and Kurosawa now that Japan really, really needs them? Since their passing, Japan has been turning out crap like this for far too many years now, trying to beat Hollywood at its action movie game and losing badly. Yes, "Hunger Games," 12 years younger than this abomination, appears to have lifted the story of "Battle Royale" -- but it was a much better movie. (Both of them owe a lot to "Ten Little Indians" and "Lord of the Flies.") What, specifically, is wrong with this flick? It incorporates all the modern, typical Japanese B-movie mistakes: mixing extreme gore with over-the-top sappiness, bad writing, worse acting, and even worse ham-handed direction. There are plot holes you could drive a tank through and improbabilities galore. In two words, it stinks. If you're still curious, I'll save you two hours of your life and give you the movie in one minute. Here's what happens: A "teen" gets shot about 50 times. (Doesn't matter which teen; all 40 of them look alike in their identical school uniforms, and the girls look pretty much like the boys. At least American movies in this genre give us racial diversity to help us tell one cast member from another.) He or she gets up and stabs his or her killer about 30 times because, evidently, all. the guns fire nothing but fake blood. The killer staggers about and then dies, most likely because he or she has seen how this epic is going and wants to bow out of it. The victim lies down, talks for about two minutes, then dies in a very over-dramatic fashion and is mooned over briefly by a survivor or two. Repeat about 20 times and you've got your movie in a nutshell. Which is really where it belongs -- in a nutshell.

Exactly. As soon as I found out about the delay, I went ahead and acquired S2 of Arrow on my own. Maybe that's a shit thing to do, but so be it. My son and I got to catch up in time to watch S3 together as it airs, something we wouldn't have been able to do without my doing so.

Normally, I wouldn't complain about this, but there were several movies on my queue that expired throughout the month of October. I have plans for what movies I'm going to watch, and it's slightly annoying to have to postpone those plans to watch a different movie before it expires. I now have three days to watch For a Few Dollars More, American Psycho (both unseen by me), The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Apocalypse Now (previously seen by me, but it's been years). You've been particularly offended by several of my posts lately KF. Not sure why but R.E.L.A.X.

I'm not offended, Duke. I'm just confused as to why you would call a show crap that you've never seen (not all TV is the same), and why you would write someone's entire career off having seen eight minutes of material. I mean, speaking of wasting time with crap, bothering to get your opinions lands on that list if this is your idea of having an informed one.

Why even bother to respond to my posts if my opinions are crap? To call me out? I stopped watching her stand up because she wasn't funny. I exaggerated the 8 minutes. Who knows how long I watched? 5. 10. 15. It was painful.

Pretend we're at a bar, and you ask me what I'm watching on TV, and I respond everything on TV is crap. Would this be something you'd try to break down logically and try to prove to me that what I said is so untrue that I am ignorant for having said it? But that's not what you did. I brought up Brooklyn Nine-Nine and you responded "I don't watch crap TV shows." I did exactly what you did the other day when I posted something as funny and you said it's not. The only difference is I was trying to make a joke of it... calling something you think is funny not funny, when it was supposed to be obvious I have never watched a single minute of the show, and have no idea if it's funny or not.

In short, I was calling something crap, for the sake of just making it fit my argument thinking we'd do a quick back and forth and it snowballed into this.

I just re-watched both of Burton's movies and I agree- he made Batman and Bruce Wayne look like such a fucking pussy it's hard to like them. Batman basically wins by accident 3 times.

Rewatch this scene:

1. Scare bad guys with cape
2. Get shot 4 times
3. Get back up and raise arms with cape again
4. Kick bad guy 1
5. Hold bad guy 2 over ledge and drop off the side right after saying, "I'm Batman".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqXpqSzjFkQ

In the second scene he gets knocked out by a bad guy and saved by Vicki Vale's camera flash. Where's the fucking writing here? PS- the voice activated car looks very doable in 2014.

The Dark Knight
Batman Begins
Batman Forever
Batman
Batman & Robin
Batman Returns
The Dark Knight Rises

Upon rewatching the Burton/Schumacher films a few years back, it was actually surprising to see how poorly Burton's films had aged in comparison to Schumacher's, and I think a lot of that comes down to how unintentionally goofy they were without really realizing it at the time, where as Schumacher's films fully embrace their camp.

I think the only animated Batman films I've seen are Gotham Knight and Under the Red Hood, both of which were okay, though I'm not sure where I'd rank them really. Probably need to get around to seeing more of the animated films at some point...

These lists never mean shit. Sites usually compile them just based on the "Available until" dates on the titles, but those are just the end of the current licensing period. For most of the titles that get put on these lists, Netflix renews the license and they stay up and the "available until" dates then get updated to another year or so. If there are stuff that are going to be permanently taken down, Netflix usually announces them officially.

Granted I haven't seen this before, but this HD transfer is remarkable for a film this old. Wow.

Pee Wee's Playhouse is just as amazing as I remember.

I was 15 when it came out and I think I watched it twice before dismissing it as "THIS IS FOR BABIES!!" It was a bit disheartening, since I adored (and still adore) Big Adventure. (Which is also on Netflix and which I have already watched). I watched a few episodes this last week and I admire what they were doing, but it's still not for me.

Edit: That damn theme song gets stuck in my head quite easily.

Netflix is dropping Dr. Who at the end of January, along with a lot of other BBC shows, apparently. I'm only about 2/3 the way through Matt Smith's first season as The Doctor. I had better get watching!

Bleach: The Movie: Hell Verse - anime!
The Brothers Bloom
Cecil B. Demented - My favorite John Waters flick!
The Deaths of Ian Stone - Sounds too cool to be true.
Joe
King Arthur - This is one of those flicks I've watched several times and can never remember if I like it or not.
Naruto Shippoden: The Movie - More anime!
Re-Animator
Spartacus: Complete series - I cannot wait to dive on to this again.
Horns
The Town That Dreaded Soundown (2014) - Looked promising.

Starting today, people in Cuba with Internet connections and access to international payment methods will be able to subscribe to Netflix and instantly watch a curated selection of popular movies and TV shows.

But... isn't most of their internet still regulated and at dial-up speed? I suppose it doesn't really matter to Netflix either way.

Her house, but yeah. It's a thing that you'd think would be a gimmick, but actually bolsters the material.

I like Bamford a lot particularly because she always commits fully to her bits. She rarely breaks or winks after saying something outrageous, which even the most deadpan/in-character comedians can't help but do often in stand-ups.

I like this paragraph from Nathan Rabin's review at the AV Club

"Self-consciously “edgy” comedians often have an obnoxious habit of repeatedly calling attention to their purported outrageousness. Of late, Ricky Gervais is particularly guilty of this: In his stand-up, Gervais simultaneously pats himself on the back and gives himself a playful little spank for being such a naughty, button-pushing little bad boy, when all he really does is take easy shots at vulnerable targets. There is none of that self-congratulatory nonsense in the stand-up of Maria Bamford, whose comedy is all the more daring for not constantly calling attention to how daring it is. Bamford doesn’t flatter her audience or herself for their courage in plunging headfirst into some of the deepest, darkest waters in all of comedy, stand-up or otherwise. She trusts her audience to follow her down whatever stormy paths her muse takes her. "

An in-depth documentary about the history of baseball. Really fascinating stuff if you enjoy the historical aspect of the game. It's even-handed, exploring the good with the bad. You get insights into the colorful characters throughout history, as well as scandals (gambling, fixing games, drug use, etc.) and the game's many years of segregation. Burns' style is very dry, but his scope is hard to beat.

I tried the Star Trek thing. If you follow-through on that, you may just want to stop when you get to Voyager. Things get really rocky around there. TNG and DS9 are both worth watching, though. LOTS of episodes in each, should keep you busy for a while.

Ken Burns' The National Parks is my favorite.

But I then again, I really like just about everything he has done. Dry, yes, but endlessly informative and well made.

Yeh this seems like a big thing to tackle- but I've never watched a single Star Trek episode. Loved everything with Picard (First Contact is my favorite ST movie) and figured I could manage through the Kirk and cheese years.

Also thinking about starting the Arrow but I'd rather not since it's ongoing.
