Netflix wasn't working last night, so I decided to get Hulu Plus. I had almost forgotten what commercials were like. I watched the first episode of The Thick of It, and there were four commercial breaks in a show that's 30 minutes long. How can they call that "limited commercial interruptions"?

I just enjoy that I wake up in the morning and check this thread to see if there were any good new additions to Netflix only to be accosted by more Denis Lavant boner posts before I've finished first cup of coffee.
Then I come home and watch The Lovers on the Bridge and what do you know, two-thirds of the way through, there's Denis Lavant running naked on the beach for a good 30 seconds with a RAGING boner. So raging in fact that Juliette Binoche grabs it as they're running as if it were a baton. An amazing film, but June 17th 2013 will be forever remembered as the day Denis Lavant's boner haunted me from morning til night.

I watched Apollo 18 last night. What a dumb movie.
Their first mistake was setting a found-footage movie 1970s, which makes all the bad camera stuff stand out all that much more. Apparently there are cameras ALL OVER THE PLACE, but you never see any unless one of the characters is carrying it. Naturally, all of the footage looks a lot better than it should, even with all of the post-production filtering.
I'll spoil this out of respect for any poor fool, like myself, foolish enough to watch it like a foolish fool.
When I heard the beasts they encounter were "rock monsters," I imagined huge, hulking things, not ... tennis-ball sized rock spiders that can interfere with radio transmissions AND control people's minds. They're just so absurd and specific to the movie's needs that it becomes a joke by the end.

I watched the first 30 min, there was nothing. I turned on english, it was just closed captioned for sounds and when they spoke english. Maybe I should try it on a different device.
Weird. Because I watched it on my laptop and when I turned off the English subtitles the Thai ones came on.

I thought the netflix deal was dead and they now have exclusive rights with Hulu.
Hulu has a deal directly with Criterion for their catalog, but individual studios can still pen a deal for a physical release with Criterion and a streaming deal with Netflix if they want to. There's still a bunch of newer Criterion movies on Netflix for that reason.

Berberian Sound Studio and Sightseers are up, both of which I had significant issues with but would recommend on the whole. The first two films in Ulrich Seidl's Paradise trilogy are streaming as well, of which I've only seen Faith and while my response ultimately leaned negative, it has worthy qualities for those interested; the general consensus seems to be that it's the weakest of the three anyway, which reminds me that I should give Love a look.

It's a really good album, but hardly unique. Iggy Pop and MC5 were already famous doing the proto-punk thing years before. It was the popular garage sound in Detroit when Death was formed, in fact. The documentary conveniently ignored this.
THANK YOU. I thought the film was pretty good, but it seriously annoyed me that the MC5 and The Stooges were never so much as mentioned in the film. And they were Detroit bands! The Punk Singer was the best rock-doc I saw last year.

I remember Boogie Nights for the first time. I actually came across it midway, expecting mostly porn, and coming across the donut/roller girl/truck scene, and realizing the movie was a masterpiece off that scene alone for a whole different reason. I finished watching it, and caught the encore of it at 1 AM, and watched it all the way through.
Then I watched it once more the next day.

With PTA I'm most interested in how Inherent Vice is regarded after the general critical rhapsody over The Master. It feels like it could elicit a general Coen Brothers Fargo-to-The Big Lebowski mourning in the moment, and that fallout after "big themes" films intrigue me.
Anderson and Phoenix are fascinating together, I will say. Much prefer his 2000s work to his '90s work, which feels too indebted to earlier directors.

So I was looking at PTA filmography just now to put in my 2cents/rankings and came to a couple realizations: A) I thought he did more films, looks like there's only 6 full length films so far and B) The Master was PTA? I missed that note, I'll move it up my need to watch ASAP list.
Also, I don't love all his films, but really appreciate them:
1. Magnolia = top 10ish
2. There Will be Blood = very good
3. Boogie Nights = Good(?) Haven't seen in forever, needs rewatch
4. Punch Drunk Love = Did not enjoy when I saw it, due a rewatch. Good Sandler acting.
5. Hard Eight/The Master/Inherent Vice = Still to come(?)

There are one or two PTA movies that I cannot stand, but as a young American movie viewer with no worse than middlebrow sensibilities (which I think would be a fair description of Duke and many others here as well), you can do SO MUCH WORSE. Hell, many of the prominent blockbuster filmmakers alone are both 1. unavoidable and 2. almost undeniably worse than Paul Thomas Anderson.

I was probably exaggerating when I said I "hate" him because you're exactly right; I can list a dozen big directors where I have't liked a single movie they made and I fully admitted to liking two PTA films. I get frustrated with the praise sometimes and my posts show up as hyperbole.

I combed the New Releases, Recommended For You, and Sci-Fi sections of Netflix looking for Into Darkness and didn't find it anywhere. I ran a search, and there it was. I have EVERY STAR TREK THING on Netflix queued RIGHT NOW. I have been watching Star Trek almost obsessively for the last six months. It makes absolutely no sense I couldn't find it by browsing. This is irritating, because I wouldn't have known it was available if it weren't for these posts. It's kinda bullshit.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: as much as I love Netflix, they are terrible at recommendations and informing customers of new releases. Its silly that the best up to date info out there is provided by non-Netflix websites.

For all the ratings that you can provide, it sure seems like Netflix should get a good idea of someone's taste of movies, actors, directors...
Yes, one of the things that annoyed me the most.
