I'm hoping they just need some time apart, since they were touring like crazy. But seriously, is there a more awesome way for a band to break up than getting into a fist fight and smashing another band member's guitar while dressed up like Mr. T? How did no one catch this on camera?

Off the top of my head I can only think of five albums I listened to and liked this year...

(no order)

Neil Young, Le Noise
Erykah Badu, New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)

Sufjan Stevens, The Age of Adz
Joanna Newsom, Have One on Me

4. Sir Lucius Leftfoot: Son of Chico Dusty (Big Boi)

6. The Suburbs (Arcade Fire)
7. High Velvet (The National)
8. Brothers (The Black Keys)
9. The Archandroid (Janelle Monae)
10. Grinderman 2 (Grinderman)

All tentative and not set in stone. Kanye's has shot up the list since it leaked ... I'd been following the unfinished leaks and G.O.O.D. Friday drops since they started, and so once the finished product was out it only confirmed its greatness. All in all, it may end up #1. Also, new Girl Talk is pretty great ... it may crack my top ten yet. And Flying Lotus should be on here, so who knows.

HM's to Deerhunter, Erykah Badu, Cee-Lo, Kid Cudi, Robyn and a shitload I'm forgetting.

"Desire Lines" is incredible and a sign they've still got it, but yeah, I've liked each album a little less than the last. Not too worried though since Cox's solo album last year was pretty great, but I still like Cryptograms more than anything he/they have done since.

Listening to it now. Enjoying it indeed, so far. Thx for the rec.

Microcastle is clearly their best. Haven't heard this one yet, though.
Cryptograms > Microcastle > Rainwater > this one

I dunno, it seems like the band are becoming more and more of a pastiche of bands who already were pastiches (Stereolab, Pavement, Yo La Tengo etc), and hence not particularly interesting. I do like Atlas Sound quite a bit tho, esp. the first one.

devil in a new dress is great. blame game is good if you ignore the chris rock outtro. i like runaway. and lost in the world is possibly my favorite song on the album.

i think so appalled is the weakest song on the album. followed by hell of a life. everything else is pretty money.

Henry Gale
11-25-2010, 10:46 PM
Yeah, "Devil In A New Dress" is my favourite of the whole album, and was one of my top songs of the year even before he added the parts after the G.O.O.D. Friday release. "Blame Game" is awesome (yes, I even think the Chris Rock part works and is actually important to have there), as are the final versions of "Runaway", "Lost In The World" (though the new stock club percussion layers took some getting used to), and "Hell Of A Life" especially, considering how the leaks were unimpressive and the additions on the final album are all pretty perfect.

So, I definitely can't agree about the second half of the album being worthless. It's also in my Top 3 of the year, for sure. (List to come.)

Great so far:
Arcade Fire- The Suburbs
Deerhunter- Halcyon Digest
Clinic- Bubblegum
Best Coast- Crazy for You
Magnetic Fields- Realism

Good so far:
LCD Soundsystem- This is Happening
Belle and Sebastian- Write About Love
Massive Attack- Heligoland
Tame Impala- Innerspeaker

So-so so far:
Wavves- King of the Beach
Beach House- Teen Dream
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club- Beat the Devil's Tattoo

Deerhunter are playing it a little safe on their latest but four or five or their new songs are among their best, including Coronado, Desire Lines and He Would've Laughed. I'd say HD's about as good as Cryptograms, but a beat below the fantastic Microcastle.

Henry Gale
11-26-2010, 04:35 AM
care to explain why?

The whole song goes from Kanye (or at least the character that the song's point of view is from) starting off at a point of anger and wanting complete control of the collapse of their relationship, accusing his girlfriend of cheating, then doing it himself. He starts making up a story of what may be going on behind his back in his head when he can't talk to her (in the part where his words start to become distorted, shifted around back and forth in each speaker and seemingly from different voices), seemingly going crazy over it, and eventually having no choice but to try and give up on them as a couple because he feels he's given her so much and she's not grateful for that, and even more selfishly, he gets nothing from out of that. Then one time when she pocket-dials him back, he hears a conversation between her and her new man (Chris Rock), and Kanye realizes how much she did love him, especially for the things she taught him, how they made each other better for a time, but that it's simply time to let her go.

Plus, I just think it's funny, and without it, it would probably stand out as the most deadly serious and depressing thing on the album. But as it is, the Rock ending delivers by elevating it from that sort of hopeless mood, and in a very unique way, giving another side to the story, which very few relationship songs bother to do.

ledfloyd
11-26-2010, 05:33 AM
maybe my problem is i don't find it funny at all. and if the best thing a girl can remember from a relationship is the things you taught her in the bedroom i don't think it's fair to say she really loved him.

I'm glad somebody's talking about this. It works for me because (and here's where I disagree with you) there isn't a trace of redemption, implied or otherwise. It's one of the most interesting bits of the album because of the disparity between how totally harrowing it is to Kanye's character and how funny it is to us. Agree with your last paragraph, though.

Just based on the two or three songs I've heard on the radio the love for The National really confuses me. Most of the stuff on you guys' lists I've never heard of before.

My meager list:

Ray LaMontagne - God Willing and the Creek don't Rise

Only three albums I've really liked this year.

Not enough to put it on any kind of top list. It my also have something to do with the vague feeling of spite I have for everything after Young God.

Sleigh Bells' Treats is pretty easily my favorite from last year. Great noise. Dunno how to rank after that without sitting down and squinting at a blank text document for a few hours. Plastic Beach and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy would be up there though. I'll go ponder and come back one day with a list.

With you on the keystroke, and me on the gangplank, there's advantages to both.

I think I've heard at least 16-17 albums from 2010, which isn't bad all things considered. I have a long way to go before getting a really awesome list, but I like this for starters. Also 1-5 get ****/****, while the bottom 5 plus all HMs save for MCS's get *** 1/2. MCS gets ***.

PS: Throw Sleigh Bells in there as well. I just heard that album this year, and it gets *** 1/2.
