I'm not even close to contributing fully yet either. I just need some sort of placeholder so I can start sorting through the stuff I've seen.

I'm disturbed by this Eisenberg trend.

I think he's very good, but he deserved awards for Adventureland moreso than The Social Network. Maybe I just find the former a more resonant film and he benefits from it.

Nonetheless though, I like him a lot as an actor. At least unlike his oft-compared brethren Michael Cera he seems able to stretch himself beyond just quirky nerd even if it is still in the same realm.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
Shutter Island

This shouldn't really be eligible. Shutter Island had no original score. It was all pre-existing music ranging from Pendericki to Ligeti to Mahler.

Spinal

I only have one performance to judge Eisenberg on, but that did not seem to me to be a particularly challenging role. He basically adopts a single attitude and carries it with him throughout the film. I don't think he's bad, I just don't think what he does is particularly memorable. There's got to be five better lead male performances than that.

You just need to look at the other consensus favorite of 2010 to see a more challenging, engaging and substantial lead performance. Maybe DiCaprio needed to pwn more people with sharp one liners in his movie.

Few questions (some of them have probably been answered in previous years but my memory is not great with this stuff):

Does I Wish I Knew count? It has no planned American release as far as I can tell.

Do short films count?

I assume we're only counting theatrical releases? It's a bit confusing considering we're counting stuff like Certified Copy, Heartbeats, etc. in the database.

Yeah, still need to see the movie. The movie's not very good, but the acting is fine across the board, so if I were you, I'd just put Ruffalo on my ballot and not bother actually watching the movie. I hear that's how the real award shows do it.

While it's more or less set in modern times, the costumes in Inception really jumped out at me. I usually only notice costumes in period pieces or fantasy, but those suits made me realize I couldn't remember the last time I saw a movie where the characters were so classy looking.

The important thing is how to do the costumes fit into the overall look and mood of the film? The last film I saw where the costumes really stood out for me was probably Les Amours imaginaires just because the film as a whole was so attractively colour-coordinated.

DavidSeven

In a film centered around architecture and design, having impeccably conceptualized and tailored modern wardrobing fits in perfectly with its aesthetic and mood. It's really not about the clothes being expensive at all. The clothes are always going to be expensive in these kind of productions, and that's certainly not what makes the costume design in Inception stand out from other blockbusters in which people wear suits.

Can I take this moment to remind everyone that Greta Gerwig is not supporting, but the lead actress in Greenberg? No? Hm, well, can I put her in both categories and hope she manages a nomination somewhere.

Seriously, though, are you people using the Hailee Steinfeld gauge for amount of time on screen?

Mysterious Dude
01-26-2011, 05:20 AM
I think Hailee spent a bit more time on screen than Greta did, though I'm afraid I didn't have my stopwatch with me at either film.

Whereas a film like Blue Valentine is really carried by both its male and its female leads, I think the driving performance of Greenberg is only Ben Stiller's, and all other performances in the film, male and female, are supporting his. Greta Gerwig is no more of a lead than Rhys Ifans.

Well, next time bring your stopwatch and we won't have to have this argument (I jest, of course, since screentime isn't the only important factor--even if it's certainly a large part of it).

Ben Stiller is the titular character, sure, and the film centers on his confused assimilation into L.A., but the richest moments in the film are when the camera observes Gerwig's character, and her awkward energy with Stiller. The film explores her whole life; it even opens on her. It's not as showy or "written" as Roger Greenberg, but she's nearly as present and significant to the narrative. She absolutely more present than

That's not typically how it is done. To use another category as an example, you're not voting for all the work a cinematographer has done in the year, you're voting for the work he did in one film made that year. The same should apply to directors.

But since you pretty much ignored the format we're using anyway, just do whatever the hell you like, I guess.

OK, now you got me curious.

I'm pretty sure The Secret of Kells isn't eligible since it was nominated for last year's best animated film oscar.
It's in the 2010 new releases thread, and I'm not the first to have nominated it, but whatever.

You are right. I didn't notice that I just assumed since it was nominated last year that it had gotten a US release in 2009 but it looks like it didn't.

OK, now you got me curious.

Heh. As I said in the film's thread, for what this film is, his framing, use of space, and general mise en scene is pretty damn stellar. I can't really explain it, but even the over-use of slo-mo just felt right. It really is a gorgeously rendered piece of genre nonsense and I felt he deserved the recognition. In a vacuum, no he probably doesn't deserve the nom (it's still a film with many issues), but relatively speaking, it was certainly one of the five most impressive directorial efforts I saw.

Yes. Post edits, PM edits, whatever you desire.

If you haven't posted your votes here, feel free to post now or PM, but if you have, your votes have/are being tallied.

I probably won't get to this until late tomorrow, so feel free to sneak in a movie where you can.

*Both of these are in Portuguese and from Our Beloved Month of August, which I believe is the title of the second link. I should have campaigned for these.

PLEASE let me know if I screwed up on this. (I sure hope you consider Our Beloved Month of August and Secret Sunshine and Mother to be 2010!) And I hope it’s okay, but I couldn’t come up with 5 deserving nominees in every category.

The last day has really changed up the results. I don't even know what's in.

With that, in the case that there's a three-way tie for the "fifth" spot, do any of you have a problem with just having four nominees, or should we use all seven? Or six even?

Spinal

I would say 6 is preferable to 4. And 4 is preferable to 7.

I like six nominations better than four, and seven better than six. Ten would be even better. Twelve or fifteen might be pushing it, but why not?

I would say 6 is preferable to 4. And 4 is preferable to 7.Keep in mind that three of those nominees will probably be Black Swan, Inception, and The Social Network.
