People aren't allowed to dislike this film anymore or something? It's not like it ever reached the status of universal acclaim. This one feels too contrived and precious for my liking. Seems very much a product of the era it was released where this sort of forced poetry and preciousness coming from indie-ish characters was in vogue. This, more than anything else DGG has done, feels like a student trying to spread some Malick-ness on some trite shit. But I like how it was filmed, and Zooey is the hot.

I think the real "WTF" is that our scores for the rest of his films are actually remarkably close!

I was more curious precisely because we're so close on the rest of his films and that happens to be my favorite of his. I haven't seen it or GW since '04, so I really should go back to see how they hold up.

Visually gorgeous, but at times a little too precious and on-the-nose. I think I'd most want to return to Undertow, oddly enough. Something about its spirit, even though its homage to Night of the Hunter is so overt, lingers and wants to be revisited. I've lost most of my fanboyish love for his work, though, unfortunately.

Eh, George Washington is a better first film than Badlands. I like Badlands quite a bit, but it's basically a lyrical/poetic/70s/artsy/whatever-y spin on the tried and true "lovers on the run" genre of Gun Crazy or Bonnie & Clyde. In that sense it's probably closer to Undertow than George Washington. Undertow being more of a genre piece.
