I hated Moulin Rouge the first go around. Then I saw it a few years later and loved it. I'm not sure what happened during those years to change my mind so dramatically.

That's sort of what I'm saying. I also found it seriously obnoxious the first time. Maybe the second time I watched it I knew it was going to be seriously obnoxious and just sat back and luxuriated in its serious obnoxiousness.

Moulin Rouge is phenomenal filmmaking -- genuine, thrilling, go-for-broke, heart-on-the-sleeve stuff. I wish more filmmakers would throw themselves out there like that.

Romeo and Juliet is overblown, but I like it too. Luhrmann has a knack for finding real emotion in pop culture, and for working with actors.

I would have loved to see his Alexander the Great movie.

Clearly, a polarizing filmmaker. I was a closet movie nerd in high school, and Strictly Ballroom was one of my first forays into non-mainstream and non-American films--the fact that it's message is about embracing the non-traditional was just a bonus.

Also, I think Moulin Rouge! is as emblematic and indicative of a post-modern generation as The Matrix.
