Hey y'all.

I'm writing articles for awardsdaily.com while I'm in Telluride, but I'll post more non-journalistic thoughts here...

Scorsese, Errol Morris, Herzog with new docs! Carlos, The Illusionist, and big screen showings of Fat City and Once Upon A Time in the West.

Can't wait.

And I'm being housed in a freakin' mansion. Too cool.

Nope.

Will be screening in Toronto in October, however.

God I hope that film is a fucking masterpiece. If not, there's going to be enough negative energy released by film buffs to stop the turning of the Earth.

Don't count on it. 127 Hours and Black Swan look to be the sneak previews.

And damnit, Carlos is probably awesome, but I only got to see Part I, and probably won't get to see the rest until it hits DVD.

Is Carlos not coming to TIFF?Michael Sicinski made this point a few years ago that the only time an Assayas film was shown at TIFF, it was the relatively mediocre Clean, and then only because it was a Canadian co-production--which I think accounts for a lot of said mediocrity: I mean, to go from a film as balls-out crazy as demonlover to making something so normal, and then to rebound so quickly and make Boarding Gate... What's up with that?

Unable to see the rest as it overlaps with my work commitments.

Summer Hours also played at TIFF and Carlos has been selected as part of the opening TIFF Bell Lightbox season (screening in October, as I said).

Of course, this is post-Clean. Interesting if what Sicinski says is true before.

I have a feeling 127 Hours will be hated around here. I liked it.

To sleep in, or see Biutiful. I chose the former.

Carey Mulligan is kind of ugly in person.

OK. Maybe makeup does a lot for her and it would have to be A LOT. But the words Carey, Mulligan, and ugly just don't belong together in any sentence I can imagine.

I'm just not that into pale, anemic-looking chicks with short hair. Just doesn't do it for me. Similarly, I seldom get a boner while looking at pictures of people in concentration camps.

Fair enough. But ugly is pretty strong stuff to saddle her with. I actually thought she was adorable in An Education. I haven't seen her in anything else yet including whatever concentration camp movie you are referring to.

Interested to see your reaction on Black Swan and if it does follow the Perfect Blue formula all the way to the end.

But you know, in a not-hot way, unlike Carey Mulligan, or Eternity.

I've only seen -- and loved -- Paprika out of Satoshi Kon's movies. So I've been planning to see his others and you just gave me reason to bump Perfect Blue to the top of my queue.

I seem to recall Perfect Blue following quite a large number of 'formulas' from DePalma's thrillers. Like... a lot of them- Body Double being the most obvious in the thematic-stylistic sense.

I may be wrong.

Body Double and Obsession follow the "formula" of Vertigo. Are you saying Perfect Blue does as well?

Wait, Herzog has finished another film already? He has two again this year? Where does he find the time?

Hmm, it didn’t occur to me, but I guess there has to be some stalking of formula from Hitchcock too, even if it’s inadvertent or indirectly via DePalma. Makes sense.

And does Vertigo follow any film's "formula" itself? Nothing comes to mind, but we could always blame it all on Buster Keaton. ;)

I guess it's more of a double effort, and to be honest, it sounds like it's just Herzog slapping his name on the project.

Didn't mention it in my awardsdaily articles, but I also saw Of Gods and Men and it was pretty wretched. Continuous shots of priests praying the Our Father, and a five minute series of closeups as they eat is not for me. Not even worth my time.

Black Swan and Tabloid tomorrow.

I attended Telluride and heard a familiar name in the thanks at the last show of the Chuck Jones theatre, one Eric Bialas. I was thinking to myself, how do I know that name?

It was my first time there and it was amazing. I sat next to Herzog (saw him 4 of the 5 days I was there, he was becoming an eyesore :P) for Errol Morris' premiere, dropped my bookpack from the balcony of the Operahouse that almost landed on Errol Morris' head, watched James Franco beatbox thorugh his anwers for his conversation in the park, and tripped and bumped into Bertrand Tavernier's ass. I didn't have a pass but was able to see most of what I wanted to see for $100 (excluding the ridiculously expensive food). Lee Chang Dongs poetry rocked my soul, while Black Swan was awful. I cringed at 2 parts, the "homework assignment" and Portman yelling "I'M THE SWAN QUEEN!" The end of that movie was a trainwreck. Zulawski's La Femme Publique is a much better film that deals with the director/actress relationship and reinventing yourself as a performer, as Portman is trying to do all film to be the black swan.

Here is what I saw ranked in order of preference:

1. Poetry (Lee)
2. Retour de Flamme 3-D (Various)
3. Here's Your Life (Troell)
4. Cameraman (McCall)
5. Tabloid (Morris)
6. Letter to Elia (Scorsese)
7. Chicago (DeMille)
8. Rotaie (Camerini)
9. The Magnificent Tati (?)
10. Hurricane Kalatozov (Calaz)
11. Chico and Rita (Trueba)
12. Black Swan (Aronofsky)
13. The Way Back (Weir)

The funny thing about writing for awardsdaily is that I think I hurt Sasha's feelings by not getting behind Never Let Me Go. Before she was very excited and nice, after the review, her tone changed completely.

Funny.
