So you know those books like 1,001 Movies to See Before You Die? Well someone put together an analogous list for albums. Then some crazy Romanian dude went and uploaded all of the albums online for your streaming (not DL-ing) pleasure. In chronological order, natch. Heavily favors Western music styles like rock-n-roll/pop, but generally covers a heckuva lot of music history anyway. Website seems a little twitchy now and then, so feel free to play around. It's my new project to listen to all of them in order. :D

I don't think we'll ever again experience as impressive a streak as that seven-year run from 1967 to 1973. Pretty fucking amazing.

Listening to The Killers. I've heard more of this album than I realized. I like it.I'm a big fan of them, with the only album of theirs that I haven't heard is that Sawdust album they did, which is really just some remixes of their previous tracks and a few new ones. Their cover of Joy Division's Shadowplay is one of my favorite tracks of theirs, along with Read My Mind, Dustland Fairytale and Believe Me Natalie, among others.

I'll have to dig through that list when I have more time.

Last night, listened to Supergrass, Dagmar Krause and Elvis Costello. Enjoyed them all. Especially Supergrass. I knew a couple of their songs (Caught by the Fuzz, Alright), but I thought the whole album was strong.

Thank Wiki. Gotta be above-board if it's from Wiki....right?

I listened to the first album, Sinatra, during my lunch break, and the streaming was a little scratchy in places. Hope that doesn't happen too often. The album was great, if you love the same song 14 times.

Hmmm ... Led Zeppelin III ... not really feeling it. I've always felt guilty for not being more familiar with Zeppelin, but this kind of made me feel like perhaps there was a reason for that. I guess I like my rock bands a bit more poppy or punky or glam or something. It's all so self-serious that I lost interest midway through. Apologies. Guess I failed this one.

ABBA's The Visitors was a surprising experience, filled with more depth and melancholy than I would have expected. Beautiful melodies, but with not as much saccharine as usual. Looking forward to hearing this one again.

It's easy to take issue with a few of the inclusions while bemoaning some overlooked "classics".

Which is what I'm most curious about: if you've had a chance to go through the entire (mostly excellent) list, what do you think are the most egregious snubs?

I haven't had enough time to really glance at all of it, but the lack of King Crimson's Red was pretty weird I thought.

It'd take some serious research to come up with those. Off hand, I'm not pleased with the lack of Ege Bamyasi, though they do have Tago Mago and Future Days for Can.

Those two are both better than the Bamyasi (have I sinned?) so I'm not overtly fussed.

It's a smashing list though.

I think Boner'd agree with you too. I slightly prefer Tago Mago myself, but both are among my all-time faves. Future Days is fantastic as well, but with 1,000 slots, that's not one to leave out, especially with Linkin Park, Destiny's Child and Limp Bizkit needlessly taking up spots.

I need to hear Tago Mago, but I think Ege Bamyasi is more of an interesting album then Future Days. That said, they're both great. Check out Sun Ra Tempel's New Age of Earth if you want to hear some more awesome krautrock with a progressive electronic vibe. I haven't really listened to a lot of "krautrock" (hate the term, love the style), but it's a really exciting and spiritual album.

Very true, but usually the choices at least make some sense. I mean, I kinda hate The Mars Volta, but I can understand someone putting De-loused at the Comatorium on there. But at what point does a knowledgeable music buff go "You know what? You haven't lived until you've heard Limp Bizkit's Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water cover-to-cover." I can't imagine even a moderate fan of music not to laugh in their face. Then again, I consider nu-metal to be among the most putrid music ever released.

Do you mean Ashra's New Age of Earth? That's a great one. Just realized I have it tagged, but not rated at RYM...might as well give it another spin this week. :)

I will never be ready for this jelly. I have spent years assuring that I will never be ready for this jelly and will never accidentally put myself in a situation when being ready for this jelly is vital.

Besides, the Criterion Collection has Armageddon and The Rock.

Criterion released those because they need money to stay in business and release the rarer films they want to release.

Fair enough. Some people may have consciously decided that out of 1,000 albums everyone needs to hear before they die, at least a couple of them should be complete and utter shit.

Yeah, I'll definitely check that one out.

That said, I did a RYM search and it's kind of interesting—it seems like there is an Ashra and an Ash Ra Tempel (seperate band pages), however they are the same band. Typically when a band goes by multiple names, the band just has the profile and the other names that they go by are mentioned there.

Also, did you ever try to seek out that Kreng album, L'autopsie phénoménale de Dieu? I just wanted to recommend it to you again and to anyone else who is interested while I'm here, specifically because I think you'd like it a lot. I definitely think that it should be considered for a list like this one. Probably the best jazz-noir dark ambient sound collage music I've ever heard.

Warning: it might actually frighten someone who isn't prepared. The atmosphere is thicker than most movies I've seen and is perfect dark room or rainy drive music.

Actually, I have a friend who swears by all three of their albums, but of course I had the same initial response as you did. He's a whore for early 80s UK pop/rock though, so take that with a grain of salt. I did, however, just check RYM and, much to my surprise, all 3 scored a very respectable 3.8 or higher out of 5.

Limp Bizkit's Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water deserves its inclusion due to its enduring status as the cultural nadir of the expressive medium known as "music". It is only through the prism of Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water that we as a society can truly appreciate the aesthetic gifts which albums that are not Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water can deliver.

As a side note, in his early teens, the poster known as Winston* once owned Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water. As of 2010, he remains not proud of this fact.

I think the rationale standing behind whoever made this list is similar to the CC mission's ideals: "...a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films..." in that asking if The Rock is an important film alone is missing the point that it is a brilliant example of what it is, for what it is. I have a feeling that that's what they were shooting for (in both lists), though I'm sure I could take issue with some inclusions in this list as well. I'm sure that financial cushion was certainly a factor, too (in CC's list).

Dexy's is brilliant. Their album Don't Stand Me Down is a pop masterpiece. Rowland's lyrics and passionate vocals create an intense sense of longing and romance, and the music is intricately arranged and expertly produced, and played with great skill.

"This is What She's Like," is one of the best "pop" songs ever written - although I don't know if a 12-minute song can really be called pop. It's more like a miniature pop-suite or something.

The entire album flows from one track to the next, there is a consistent theme to it, and thus it really needs to be listened to as a whole, without interruption.

I've only heard 85 albums off of the list. I have a long, long ways to go....

Just realized Homogenic isn't on there. Bjork's on there three times, but weird that Medúlla gets a spot over that one.

Yeah, I would say that her two best albums are not represented. Homogenic and Post.

Also, no To Bring You My Love from PJ Harvey, though she is represented strongly with three other albums.

Yeah, I would say that her two best albums are not represented. Homogenic and Post.

I know it's a bit weird, but Vespertine is my favorite of hers, although Homogenic and Post are perfect albums. Both should be on there.

Also, no To Bring You My Love from PJ Harvey, though she is represented strongly with three other albums.

Huh. I somehow haven't heard Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea yet. I will have to rectify. And to continue my strange opinions on your favorite singers, I prefer White Chalk to Dry, Rid of Me and To Bring You My Love. I like 'em all though. :)

It's probably my favorite.

And to continue my strange opinions on your favorite singers, I prefer White Chalk to Dry, Rid of Me and To Bring You My Love. I like 'em all though. :)

I have a strange relationship with White Chalk. I initially considered it somewhat slight. But then I used it as mood music for the last play I was in to help me get into a somber state of mind. I listened to it several times a week for a couple of months. I grew to appreciate its subtle power and chilling starkness. I don't even know if I can rank it anymore because it now carries associations for me that go beyond the music itself.

Well, only one Mingus album is criminal, but they did at least choose the right one with Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, my favorite jazz album. Mingus Ah Um is great, but I'd put Pithecanthropus Erectus and Blues & Roots a touch above it. It's pretty clear jazz was an afterthought in this list.

They blew their load on Miles. He's great, but if they were gonna have that few jazz albums, they could've spread the wealth a little better.

Well, he's the safe bet, though with greats like Mingus, Monk, Basie and Coltrane getting one mention each, it safe to say that they should've just left jazz off the list altogether.

I'm trying to do a Top 10 for each decade...

1990s

1 Primal Scream – Screamadelica

- For me, Primal Scream's album is the definitive album of the 1990s. It's the decade's Dark Side of the Moon if you will. It still sounds like it's from the future, and laid the foundation for so many genres to come. Truly one of the great artistic statements of my lifetime.

2 Dylan, Bob – Time Out of Mind
3 Magnetic Fields – 69 Love Songs
4 Cornershop – When I was Born for the 7th Time
5 Depeche Mode – Violator
6 Pet Shop Boys – Behaviour
7 Ride – Nowhere
8 Guided by Voices – Alien Lanes
9 Tortoise – Millions Now Living Will Never Die
10 Eels – Beautiful Freak

I just start a new album up during my lunch break and listen to it while surfing. Easy way to sorta "force" myself to listen to the stuff I haven't heard. And listening to them in order gives me a reason not to surf around for something else I might want to listen to more. So far so good, tho admittedly only 4 albums in.

Apparently, my self-deprecating humor is lost on you. I don't think I'm "above" ratings or lists. I just choose not to do them very often because they make me uncomfortable. That says nothing about you or the others that engage with them. And my remark in here was a joke, but I guess it hit too close to home?:P

I think that some of the other music that I listened to at that time would be more hardcore, but I was to meek to ever think of myself as a bad boy. Others I knew did, but it wasn't because of Iron Maiden. More for Slayer and Megadeth methinks. Iron Maiden always seemed one step beyond say Def Leppard to me. Early pre-Black album Metallica fans also had that bad boy chip on their shoulder.
