From the auteur of the Wes Craven Presents Dracula trilogy and the My Bloody Valentine remake comes...

I hear that it looks great in 3D, so...I heard Lussier's 3D effects for My Bloody Valentine were solid, so hopefully he just lets loose with the crazy shit in this one, because those were the only times MBV was any good.

After reading that /film also had very nice things to say about Skyline and Battle: Los Angeles, I realize that it's mostly just hype-y spin-y what the fuck, so...disregard my previous comment.

So by my count, this and the Sorcerer's Apprentice means that Cage has one more bad movie before he comes out with a good one.

That would be Ghost Rider 2 right?

How long before we get the generic parody "Nick Cage Movie"?

Cage and Schumacher are teaming up again for a film next year too. That should be awesome. 8MM turned out well for both.

Whoever's Nicolas Cage's agent should be shot. Or given a raise. I'm not sure which.

It boggles my mind that people think Cage looks good with long hair. He looks goofy!! You can always tell if its gonna be good or bad Cage by the hair.

As long-haired Cage movies that I can recall off the top of my head are concerned, Con Air is probably the pick of the litter.

Those crappy Disney movies he made aside, The Rock has far more charisma. I don't expect either Faster or Drive Angry to be all that good, really.

I really like The Rock. The Rundown is a great movie.

I think Faster looks like a genuine 2000s grindhouse movie.

Faster (while being one of the sillier titles I've ever heard) looks better, but both will probably be entertainingly bad. I'm hoping Faster will be like The Rundown and Walking Tall. Drive Angry though...those accents...and I didn't like Con Air...

Ahahhaaha I love it. I haven't seen any of it since whatever year it came out on DVD, but now I'm tempted.

Also, hearing Joseph Kahn talking in-depth about the production of it on /Filmcast and Adam Scott doing his own, more brief version of it on Doug Loves Movies podcast, both make me want to re-watch it even more.

Adam Scott: "I thought we were all trying to be hilarious... It's kind of a unique mix of the studio wanting to make a Fast & The Furious movie, and then a director wanting to make fun of Fast & The Furious. And then some actors wanting to be in Fast & The Furious, and then some actors wanting to make fun of Fast & The Furious. 'Cause there were some dudes in the movie, when we would be getting ready to shoot a scene... they had these sleeveless leather vests on, and they would be doing curls. I guess so their muscles would be all big when they're rolling. I was just like 'what the fuck IS this?!'"

Someone finally utilized Finchter at his utmost badassness.

I sort of agree and will say that there are definitely some occasional moments of unexpected and awesome ridiculousness to be found in this, including a couple of sure-to-be memorable action setpieces, with Fichtner and (more surprisingly) Amber Heard livening things up and teasing shifts into a tone more fun than what's mostly on display otherwise; but overall it just didn't come together as well I was hoping it would. It's on a similar level of silliness and confused Grindhouse cinema aspirations as Machete, but only if that movie had been burdened by its overseriousness.

The opening 3D shots, of the movie's Hell no less, are as good as the three-dimensional effects seem to get in terms of scope and ambition, but it is kind of nice to see a fully live action narrative film shot in the format all the way (I say this because Jackass 3D would fall into that slot otherwise) that looks this capable. It just sadly doesn't add as much as it should to everything going on, shooting everything very plainly, even when it could even making all the gun-toting and car chases jump out a little more. Also, I'm not quite sure if it's just the fact that it was shot in 3D that cost it so much, but the fact that this cost $50 million is kind of stunning to me since a lot of the effects (especially towards the end) look terrible.

But in the end, I guess it's fun enough, just maybe not necessarily worth seeing right now for the price of a theatre ticket with an added charge for the extra dimension. It'll play just as well around Summer time when it comes out on DVD and all of that. And if anyone here, like me, got possibly unintentional thrills and laughs out of Lussier's last film, the My Bloody Valentine remake, then it's probably more wise to go in with that level of expectation than whatever I was hoping for with Drive Angry. It's on a very similar level of "some great moments, but ultimately underwhelms" that I came away with for The Green Hornet, the last 3D movie I happened to see.

**1/2-ish
