I saw Klimt today actually and enjoyed it, though not as much as That Day. Aesthetically it's really impressive even though I had no clue what was really going on most of the time. Apparently skimming over the wiki article of Gustav Klimt before viewing doesn't help a lot, but still an interesting film. :pritch:

The Lost Domain looks pretty cool, I'll have to bookmark it on KG.

Yay! The Lost Domain is much more in the vein of That Day. It's playful, but not as funny as That Day. I also find it much more visually impressive than That Day, though naturally that one's not bad by any means.

I considered tackling Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, but my lord, I bet I could post a hundred amazing stills from that flick. Spielberg (while not my favorite filmmaker by a mile) has a fantastic eye for framing some excellent shots.

I know of no way to output VLC screenshots as JPG and since I'm guessing that's the program most people use to take their screenshots, finding a convertor online and then converting each screenshot is a bit too much of a hassle for what it's worth.

I liked it. I'm working on re-evaluating Renoir. I've seen The Rules of the Game, Grand Illusion and The River, none of which I loved, but this was back when I was essentially a noob, so rewatches are in order, especially of the former 2.

I think you have the wrong Ray for the 50s. The Indian guy I might agree with, 4 out of 5 of his films are great.

Bresson - I haven't seen enough, but all signs point to doubtful.

Godard is a no for me.

Coppola I thought about, but I don't think he's as strong as the others I mentioned. 80s Scorsese falls along side him.

Tarkovsky I have only seen one of his three 70s films, but even if the other two are 10s I don't think there's enough to have him considered amongst the rest who had many great films.

There's more than enough in those three films. It's silly to have a minimum requirement, though I'd agree it'd have be more than one. I'd probably consider PTA the best filmmaker of the 00s based solely on Punch-Drunk Love and There Will Be Blood.

I was going to say Keaton in the 20s. Also, though there are tons I haven't seen, Fassbinder in the 70s is pretty epic.

I'd agree with both of those. For some reason, I started from the 30s, but Keaton, Chaplin, Murnau and perhaps Pabst are all worth considering. Fassbinder by sheer volume and consistency, even if he doesn't have the towering masterpieces of the others, at least deserves an honorable mention.

But I'm not talking about best director for any given decade. I'm talking about the director who had the best decade ever. I would rate Early Summer, Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice, Tokyo Story, Early Spring, Tokyo Twilight, Equinox Flower and Floating Weeds all higher than Solaris, with two of those films in Top 100 (actually Top 50). The fact that Tarkovsky only made 3 films in the 70s limits his chances of being better than Ozu in the 50s in my eyes. It isn't that there's a minimum requirement. It's that his body of work just wasn't prolific enough to compete with Ozu's. That's why it isn't silly for me to say that Tarkovsky couldn't have the better decade. Even if The Mirror and Stalker are as awesome as Early Summer and Tokyo Story, Ozu would still have 5 other films better than Tarkovsky's 3rd film.

We're talking about our personal favorites here, so this thing is going to go around in circles. Thinking on it off and on today, I would probably say 50's Ozu wins the best director for a decade argument, which shouldn't be too much of a surprise for people who have paid attention to my posts over the years. For you I'd guess 60's Godard, but who knows?

I'm really kind of ashamed to admit this, but I don't know how to take a good frame grab. (I've read that you can just pause the DVD and do a print screen, but I have no idea if that works well or not.) What are some good options? I'm working on a project at the moment where I'll soon be needing to take quite a few.

First, download the open-source general purpose media player VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/). It is very versatile and quite stable on all platforms. Once you're playing your movie (in VLC), right click anywhere inside the window where the movie is playing and click take snapshot. On my machine, VLC saves to the "Pictures" folder, but I think you can change this. Once you've got your caps, upload to imageshack or photobucket and you're ready to upload them here.

No problem.
Yes, you can pause with space-bar :). I also like to toggle off the subs before I pause, as they can get in the way.

I've really enjoyed Affair in the Snow, Eros Plus Massacre & Coup D'Etat, so they'd all be recommended if you haven't seen them. Yes, it's sort of a Russian 400 Blows, set during World War II in a Siberian mining town/prisoner of war camp/possible gulag. The boy commits a series of escalating crimes, until everything goes really crazy in the last ten minutes or so.

Yea the landscapes and cityscapes in the film are really cool. The technique here is something I don't think I have ever seen used before in cinema. The movie itself is a decent period piece, hardly the height of Rohmer's filmography but definitely worth a watch.
