View Full Version : The Movie Title Game

So, I'm not sure if this is a new idea or not. I'm sure I've probably seen something similar on another forum at another point in time. Anyway, I thought it would be fun to have a thread where we could start with a movie title, someone could rate (star, number, etc.) the movie, and write up a short or long review if they would like. The next poster would need to name another movie with a word in the title that contains at least one word from the previous movie title. They would then rate it, write a review, etc. The goal would be to see how long we could go consecutively while also sharing our thoughts on the movies. If you are the next poster to make a connection, try to think of another movie that's title contains a word in the movie title you're using so that the streak can continue. Obviously, you would want to avoid one-word titles if possible. Once we are unable to connect anymore titles, we would just start over. To give an example, the first person could start with The African Queen, the next person might pick The Queen of the Damned, the person after that might pick Damn Yankees, then The Pride of the Yankees, so on and so forth. Hopefully, this makes sense. I thought it'd be a fun time-waster type of thing to do. Also, you would want to include in your review or rating which number your movie is consecutively so we can see how long the current streak has continued. Does anyone want to get it started with number one? :)

Don't know much about martial arts films but this is a really good one.

Les temps qui changent (Changing Times) (2004): Not Téchiné's best work but very strong, and something of a return to form after Alice et Martin and Les Égarés.

Le temps du loup (Haneke) *** - A most welcomed addition to Haneke's cinema insomuch as it takes his slow, subdued style and puts it to use in this thrilling, adventure film. Technically brilliant and Huppert is Huppert.

Atrapat en el temps (Ramis, 1993) ***
One of Murray's best performances and wonderful integration of a high-concept idea into mainstream comedy. I think they should've stuck to the Catalan title used in parts of Spain.

I just used the french phrase cuz that's what baby doll did. Didn't mean to come off as pretentious but can see how a joke could easily be made.

6. The Road to El Dorado
I don't remember much about this movie. It's an animated movie where Aztecs play basketball or something. I think Rosie Perez is one of the voices. (Back to English, you fucks).

And of course it wouldn't have worked. Time =/= Times hellooo. :)

7. The Road to Welville - I always remember this being funny, though I'm afraid to ever go back and actually watch it again. I don't remember much aside from Anthony Hopkins being gloriously over-the-top, Bridget Fonda getting naked and Dana Carvey throwing boxes of shit at people.
EDIT: Also, to avoid further confusion, the word "time" is contained within the word "times", thus a title with the word "times" in it also contains the word "time".

8. The Road Home - (from my original review) "a pure, affecting dose of unsophistication that embraces the importance of family and recognizes that life is paradoxically a long, arduous journey that takes place in what can seem like an instant."

8. The Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting (Ruiz, 1979)
You can see the beginning hints of his baroque style in here. The beautiful black and white photography enhances a surreal dive into a world of tableaux and intrigue. Ruiz says there's stuff in here about gods and reconciliation. I wish he'd reconcile A Closed Book with the other terrific stuff he's produced.

Just to be clear, "Road" was leading to a dead end, so you were opening it up by throwing out "Hypothesis", "Stolen" and "Painting"? I think you need to read the rules again. :)

Years before he would travel back in time and join Police Squad, Lt. Frank Drebin commands an interstellar frisbee out to rescue a totally bitchin' space babe from her old man's overly active imagination. And then Robbie the Robot shows up and makes whiskey. HELLS YEAH.

20. Funny People (US) - ** 1/2 - Starts great, but fizzles really badly until the end. I respect the direction Apatow tried to go with it, and Sandler pulls his role off with aplomb, but the film is just filled with a lot of people that are hard to get behind, and goes on about 45 minutes too long.

21. The People Under the Stairs - Wes Craven kinda sucks and this film shows why. Great premise but falls victim to the Crave's usual misjudged (or rather, unjudged) tone and... well, that's virtually all I remember about it. Actually remember the trailer for Mikey more vividly, which was on the VHS that I rented back in the day. Never a good sign for any film.

Since I can't think of a movie whose title has the words "the", "towering" or "inferno" in it that I've seen, I'll just throw out United 93—which features a "tower" in it—and give it zero stars and then call it a disgustingly inhumane film with the inappropriate editing style of a fast-paced Jerry Bruckheimer blockbuster.

Since I can think of a movie with either "United" or "93" in it, I'm just going rate something else with a number in it: the number 30 bus I took to work to this morning. It was on time and succesfully had no breakdowns, but there were two teenage girls talking over loud for the whole trip which somewhat dampened the experience. I give it 6/10.

24. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - 7.0
For me, this was easily the weakest installment of the trilogy. It was still enjoyable, but nowhere near the excellence of the first and third installments.

I might be on a minority, but I'm a huge fan of this film. Visually very dynamic and Cage makes the role. I love the opening sequence showing the fabrication and usage of a single bullet.

Have you seen the extended version? I found it to be the only film of the three that really benefited from the added scenes quite a lot. They cut out some beautiful stuff for the theatrical release.

I have not, but I do own it. If it is that much of an improvement on the theatrical cut, I'll have to take the time to watch it sometime. Thanks for the heads up!

27. Of Time and the City: Coming from Davies, this is pretty unambitious, and he's not doing anything very creative in terms of sounds and images, but the narration is often hilariously scathing.
