He's great, but man do some of his films blend into one in the memory. Really had to struggle to tangle them apart.

I greatly admire his style yet sometimes it can get too overbearing (see last film).
Also, Matti Pellonpää is one of my favourite actors ever.

By the way, the ratings for The Match Factory Girl so far strike me as inexplicably high, given how much of a rip-off of Mouchette it is. As a rule, I tend to prefer Kaurismäki's pastiches of 1930s Hollywood films (romantic comedies in Shadows in Paradise, and depression-era crime pictures in Ariel) to his pastiches of art movies (for instance, The Last Laugh in Drifting Clouds), because the former are so full of twists and turns that, on a moment to moment basis, I didn't know where they were headed. (Lights in the Dusk is a major exception.)

It's quite blatantly Hans Christian Andersen by the way of Bresson. Which is an awesome mix.

It's quite blatantly Hans Christian Andersen by the way of Bresson. Which is an awesome mix.It felt more Bresson than Andersen to me (then again, I haven't read the latter since fourth grade), to the point that I couldn't stop thinking about Mouchette the entire time I was watching it: De-dramatized scene of the protagonist making her family dinner, check. The protagonist being called a whore, check. The protagonist attempting suicide, suggested by an offscreen sound cue, check.

Sounds terrible, much like Mouchette was.

How are you guys getting your hands or eyes on stuff like Calamari Union and Take Care of Your Scarf? I live in Portland, Oregon and I'm trying to track these films down.

I liked the whore stuff more than the insane serial killer stuff. Also, I don't know much about rat poison, but it seems like it's made to kill a pretty small animal and mixing it with water and alcohol is probably not going to make it more deadly to a human. Granted, we never see the bodies.
