View Full Version : Match Cut Film Interruptus Roundup

Hey all,
As I've discussed in the FDT, I have thought about doing a "Film Interruptus" in which we all could participate in analyzing a movie from its first frame on. I'd separate the movie into fifteen minute blocks by week, so it'd take about a month or so to do it. The first few days would be a time where we could all simply watch or rewatch the movie to prepare for what we're about to do.
The idea was to go for a movie that's easily accessible by all. Whether it be one that's owned by us, or available on Instant Watch would be best. Many seemed to want a movie that hasn't necessarily been discussed a million times on Match Cut.
Right now, let's try and come up with a movie that we'd all like to talk about. I've come up with a list of movies that I think would work best for discussion and are all available on Instant Watch.
Propositions:
Beauty and the Beast (Cocteau, 1946)
Breathless (Jean-Luc Godard, 1960)
Fat City (John Huston, 1972)
The Fly (David Cronenberg, 1986)
Oasis (Lee Chang-Dong, 2002)
Paper Moon (Peter Bogdanovich, 1974)
The Red Shoes (Michael Powell, 1948)
Stagecoach (John Ford, 1939)
The Trial (Orson Welles, 1962)
Wild at Heart (David Lynch, 1990)
If there's enough discussion, and common interest in a movie, I'll start it in a week or so.

I'd like to vote for Beauty and the Beast. It's something I really want to revisit.

Good idea. I'd be interested in doing this with Breathless (Jean-Luc Godard, 1960), Fat City (John Huston, 1972), Oasis (Lee Chang-Dong, 2002), and The Red Shoes (Michael Powell, 1948).

At 15 minutes a week, some of these would take over two months. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. I'm just saying.
I own Beauty and the Beast and The Red Shoes and really need to revisit Oasis. So those would be my preferences.

We'll adjust accordingly of course.

The only one of those I haven't seen is Oasis, so I'd be interested in doing that. I'd suggest you break the film viewings up into scenes though (location/time breaks are the easiest demarcations) rather than 15 minutes segments. It's easier to analyze individual scenes than it is to analyze film segments based purely on timecode.

I'm down with this.
I'm fine with any of those. We'll see how the majority vocalizes and I'll put my emphasis in then.

I'll second The Trial. I'd love to do a film that has a strong focus on its formal elements. As good as Fat City is, it's not the kind of film that would benefit from a shot-by-shot analysis as much as many other choices.
Stagecoach and Wild At Heart are also great choices, though I imagine there are a few here who hate the latter. For Godard, I'd take My Life to Live over Breathless as there's more to analyze shot-by-shot and it's broken up into 12 segments, so it'd also divide up easier. Masculine-Feminine would also work well.

You don't like Godard in general, so your opinion on that is void. As for Wild at Heart, I don't hate it, but it is my least favorite of his and I would much rather do Blue Velvet, Lost Highway or Inland Empire for this thread.
Does The Trial suit you? I know you're not a big fan, but I'm sure no one here wants to limit ourselves to only those.

Dude, this makes like no sense at all.

Contempt is great. Band of Outsiders is solid. Alphaville is unique. Breathless is engaging. Two or Three Things I know about Her is an interesting experiment. Pierrot le Fou has it's moments but typifies Godard's penchant for an obnoxious tone. My Life to Live is extremely irritating. I don't care for Weekend's approach to it's subject matter at all.
I'm down with The Trial. How am I not a big fan? I love Welles.

I'd be completely on-board for Contempt or Two or Three Things I Know About Her for this. Pierrot le Fou is my favorite of his, so I'm not sure what's obnoxious about it. I adore Weekend, but I can understand why it rubs people the wrong way.

I thought you mentioned that you liked but didn't love it. Glad to be wrong about that. :)

I dunno, lots of moments in it just really annoyed me. Le cinema. Le cinema. That kind of thing.
I guess with The Trial I really like it but it's not my favorite Welles... top four for sure though.

The Trial or Oasis looks to be a somewhat consensus. I'll continue for a few days.

I've been meaning to watch Oasis forever. Good excuse to finally do it.
