I find him a hard director to rate, because as accomplished as some of his films are stylistically, ultimately, story is the thing. So as much as I liked Annie Hall and Broadway Danny Rose on first viewing, they haven't held up well. On the other hand, Stardust Memories just gets better and better. So does that mean I like that film better than Annie Hall? Rather than figure out the answer, I'll just rate his work from the last ten years:

His philosophy of life doesn't match up with mine anymore, which leads to some disconnect in the later features, whereas it's somehow more tolerable in his 70s work.

Ya, with some of his films from the 80s-early 90s, I almost have to try and enjoy them in spite of myself. For such a great filmmaker, it seems he has a really disappointing worldview. On the other hand, when I've seen him interviewed, he comes off totally detached from that perception I have of him, so who knows
