Wasn't too sure if this thread already existed on here... (Feel free to merge if that's the case.)

I bought this recently:

Only I don't think it was the 20th Anniversary addition. It was an impluse buy at Target due to the fact that I've never seen it before and the film was only $7.50.

What's in the Kinski boxset?

Sven
12-16-2007, 01:56 AM
I've got that Kinski boxset, personally autographed by Herzog from when I met him at Sundance. It's wicked!

Q, it has all the Kinski Herzog collaborations, plus My Best Fiend. That's Aguirre, Fitzcarraldo, Woyzeck, Nosferatu, and Cobra Verde.

Ah k, thought from the picture that maybe there was one other in there I didn't know about, guess it was just Best Fiend.

Today in Chinatown I bought some very un-legit DVDs of Tian Zhuangzhuang's The Go Master, Bong Joon-ho's The Host, Hou Hsiao-hsien's Millenium Mambo and Jia Zhang-ke's Still Life, and only Bong's didn't work when I tried to play it on my brother's lap top (c'est la vie); I would've got Three Times except it didn't have English subtitles. In total it cost me ten bucks.

When I watched it last night, it was only ninety minutes long but IMDb says two hours (I remember it being somewhere in the 100-minute range myself, but that was a few years ago).

It's been a few years since I've seen it as well, but 2 hours sounds about right to me. IMDb has the US DVD listed as 105-minutes, but 119 as the actual running time. I didn't realize they cut it for the DVD release, though fortunately I picked up a decent import before it was released here.

I have a region free. Play.com is free shipping even to the U.S.? If that's true, I'll wait a few more months to see if we get a region 1 release date and then purchase it there.

I don't really know how to respond to those criticisms; the interchangeability of the leads is the main source of the film's comedy, and I don't think it's possible for a film like this to not keep telling us how free-spirited the characters are... I suppose that aspect might have aged the film a bit but it didn't keep me from enjoying it. Anyway, I was really tired when I watched it and didn't view it very critically, and gave it such a positive score cos it delighted me on a surface level (dialogue, performances, etc). Can't say where it stands in EL's filmography since I've only seen Trouble in Paradise (which I liked a tad more).

Can't say where it stands in EL's filmography since I've only seen Trouble in Paradise (which I liked a tad more).Having seen Trouble in Paradise again recently, I'm still in awe of the subtlety of the dialogue and the complex emotional dynamic between the three leads, each of them a fully realized character (Mariette/Kay Francis' very helplessness is, at the same time, what makes her an easy target and what Gaston/Herbert Marshall falls in love with her for, in contrast with Lily/Miriam Hopkins, who's evidently capable of taking care of herself before she meets Gaston), and also, the way it makes its political points without making a big deal of them (the only real villain in the film is Adolf/C. Aubrey Smith, who wants to cut the workers' pay; and of course, Gaston has that great line: "I see. You have to be in the Social Register to keep out of jail. But when a man starts at the bottom and works his way up--a self-made crook--then you say, 'Call the police! Put him behind bars! Lock him up!'").

Of the six Lubitsch films I've seen so far (and I'll be seeing To Be or Not to Be in the near future if not tonight), I think Trouble in Paradise and Heaven Can Wait are really in a class by themselves, and even The Shop Around the Corner, which is a much more modest film, is still a major work. I've only seen Angel once and that was a few years ago, but I remember being disappointed by the ending; still, everything leading up to it is elegant and witty and flawless. Ninotchka is good, but not quite on the same level as Trouble in Paradise, The Shop Around the Corner and Heaven Can Wait. And there's a lot I like about Design for Living but it's easily the least of his films I've seen so far.

Sweet!

Whenever you watch it, if you get a chance, can you post your thoughts about the DVD?

I've always been one of the big fans of the movie, and when this one came out, of course the regular DVD went down in price. So I am wondering if it is worth shelling out the extra dough for the special edition, or if the regular DVD is sufficient.

Buy the special edition - so worth it. I have two prior copies of the film (the regular bare bones as well as the Superbit) and I don't regret spending money on this third version. Improved picture plus excellent extras (FFC's commentary is lovely.)

But it does. :)

Sealab was a huge surprise; I only picked it up cos there was a sale on Adult Swim DVDs at the local hi-fi store, and I haven't really been crazy about most of their shows that I've seen. The first 8 episodes is nonstop lulz.

McCabe didn't impress me much when I last saw it for the first time in high school, but my tastes have changed vastly since then. Fully expecting to love it this time.

I feel the same way about both Adult Swim, which is waaaaay overrated, and about Sealab, which is consistently hilarious. I've never actually sat down and watched the episodes in order, so I have no idea what is on the first season, but there are a few episodes that had me in tears.

If I don't love it, I'll eat my shoe. Chabrol's one of those filmmakers I've neglected for ages even though I've experienced him by proxy through just about every slow-burning French thriller made since his emergence. As you know, I loved the hell out of Le Ceremonie, which I believe you (among others) merely found 'solid'... I guess that's a sign that he's for me.

I'm not Boner, but I know that Sycophant and I are fans. Shunji Iwai's film is awash in gorgeous cinematography and visual style throughout, and the only hindrance to the film is an occasional over-stretch of narrative. At times it's too much an attempt to capture the now, but it's largely successful, and it's often startling. It's development with the camcorder is, to my eyes, exceptional and it creates some truly stellar imagery amidst its psychological-heavy story. Yet there's a persistent hope throughout the film that allows Iwai to suggest a growing maturity. In that sense, it's bildungsroman, but it works nicely throughout. I'd recommend it for a rental; I think Wats disliked it, but most others have been complementary.

Hellraiser Inferno is pretty good. Easily the best of the straight to DVD films, and probably the second best film in the series. While it is quite different than the others -- it has more of a Tales From the Darkside thing going on -- and while it sometimes shies away from some of the more grotesque imagery, it is none the less unsettling and atmospheric.

I was pleasantly surprised by it.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts exactly. I'd say it's the second best in the series as well (behind the original).

And yeah, it relies more on disturbing psychological horror, rather than grotesque, gooey gore.

But I think it's all the better for it. While the original films certainly try to do both, I also found the psychological implications of the films' universe to be more interesting than the gore.

The female twin Cenobites are terrifying. I've read 3 or 4 reviews where people say they found them incredibly sexy, but this is something I just cannot connect with at all.

S&M is not for me, I guess.

Questions like "Why don't you like me?" or "Why don't I fit in?" never have good answers and I learned a long time ago not to ask them.

Yes, I've been giving you shit. But I would've given the exact same shit to, say, Spinal had he posted "haha! I remember seeing the trailer for this. I guess it never hit theaters" and its subsequent iterations, which I expect he wouldn't.

I've been snippy lately, and your posts have been handy.

Obviously, you like posting the way you do. I like posting the way I do. Whatever.

EDIT: Actually, I'm going to amend my first statement. Those questions have no good answers unless you're willing to cede the possibility that you're actually at fault for not being accepted and you're willing to do the required soul-searching and and undertake the required changes in your modes of thinking and behavior to actually effect a positive change.

No one has anything personal against you...I don't think anyone here has any personal issues with each other. It's a pretty friendly group for the most part.

You sometimes set yourself up for ridicule, though. When someone posts an article, and you ask something about the article that is clearly stated within the article, you have to expect people will say "just read it".

You're a nice guy, but I think you and I both have the issue of sometimes posting before thinking.

I can't say that it wasn't just an issue with the in-store TV and player, but it looked bad and turned me off of wanting to buy it.

I watched that sequence yesterday, and it looked pretty good. A lot of retail stores are pushing the Sony Bravias, and my buddy has one, and I can't fucking stand watching anything on it. Too much manipulation of the picture to try to get a 3D image, motion blur, all sorts of shit. When the picture is somewhat still, its crystal clear, but it ain't worth all the other shit. I've got a 50" Samsung Plasma, and it looked tits.

I watched this last night, and definitely recommend it. It does a great job of bucking slasher cliches it doesn't need and embracing the ones it does. Plus it was uber claustrophobic. A little slow (there are only 5 characters, so don't expect super amounts of gore), and the ending was slightly disappointing, but all-around a good time.

Let me know how this one is.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm thinking the BluRay is worth it, since it's so freaking cheap anyways.

Love Linklater, love PKD, love the cast...I can't imagine being too disappointed.

I did my first blind buy ever, because it was at a very reasonable price:

Yeah, I'm pretty excited to check it out. Plus, according to the reviews, it's one of the better looking Bluray's out there.

Nope, but I've wanted to ever since it first came out in theatres.

It was $13 for the SteelBook edition, so I decided to take a chance.

Just wondering. I was hugely anticipating it before the release and then once I saw it I was so bored I couldn't even finish it.

I just remember it coming out back in 2005, and it being promoted as one of the three-or-four "groundbreaking" films that had actors working almost entirely on green screen.

The others were Casshern, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and Sin City.

Ranking those 4

1. Sin City / A+
2. Casshern / A-
3. Sky Captain / B
4. Immortel / never finished

I've gotten a whole pile of horrors on the Amazon Marketplace this past week. All brand new, all below $5 each.

I got...

Outpost (Ray Stevenson vs. Nazi zombies)
Deathwatch (Andy Serkis vs. Nazi ghosts)
Below (WWII submarine ghost story written by Darren Aronofsky)
Wind Chill (ghost story with Emily Blunt)
Nightmare Detective (Shinya Tsukamoto mindfuck)
The Devil's Chair (supposed to be a good little slasher)
Dark Floors (one of the Ghost House series', made by a bad metal band)
No Man's Land: The Rise of Reeker (another from the Ghost House series; prequel to a so-so horror flick I saw 2 years ago)
Rogue (the killer croc movie by the guy who did Wolf Creek)

And I got these for Jen...

The Orphanage
The Living Dead Girl
Cloverfield
Retribution (Kurosawa's film)
